Re: PDF Secured files

one thing you may want to try is www.empowermentzone.com/p2tsetup.exe

You technically can run this and hack the pdf file.

However if it is an image or heavily encripted it may be able to be broot force cracked and you may get a document.

Or you get a mass of garbage.

Even if it does manage to crack the file and you get what you want the thing is all this thing is is a simple front end to several tools, and all they do is pull the text and dump it.

The security system is not so much cercomvented but ignored completely.

However you don't get a pritty file.

You may get enough to understand it but not use it.

Or you get a few numbers.

Re: PDF Secured files

You can't.

If its secured or an image document then you can't even access it.

You will have to ask the people you got it from to give you a normal document.

On an interesting note, adobe does allow secured documents to be read, there are designs for the most image full documents to be totally accessible.

Sadly there are still some people that are just not following guidelines.

Re: something people should be aware of

Well I wouldn't worry, you can turn most of the suggestions and tips off.

Sadly you need to turn your diagnostics to basic to and all that junk.

I will sadly have to restructure my folder structure so I don't have 12 enteries and growing because of windows defender targeting blind software most are bgt games, some are actual programs, small things but still the thing is well.

I am going to stop short from excluding my downloads folder, at least the main one, I have a second for the ftp client so maybe I can well shove all the stuff I am not sure about over there.

I really should structure my folders when I first install because especially with antivirus and security software becoming more zellous I really should have folders for say blind games, then install all my programs into it  then other catogories like that and just do that, then I can just exclude all those folders and not worry.

I know that really defeats the purpose of antivirus but all these manufacturers really don't have the facility to report and at any rate even if they did allow for large files, the fact is you can't submit them at all.

This seriously is more than a coincidence antivirus programs are targeting blind people's software.

I am sure no one else has it this bad.

However ofcause if you could set phrases if you need to have it do things for spaciffic things well.

Sure it can suggest and advertise for you, however if you can't control it at all its basically useless.

And to be honest on a really serious note, with the death of ms music, if this gets any worse, I am seriously going to have to just not sign in with an ms account or maybe never use win10 and remain on 7 for ever or xp or something if it starts getting me angry or something really stupid.

Maybe I will have to download one of those dodgy spyware full antispyware software and turn a lot of stuff off breaking a whole lot of things.

The thing is we really need control, and I just don't see much of it.

There was a worrying article released on news that ms from consumer point of view seems to be servicing businesses instead of its standard user base anymore.

Unsure if its true but reguardless of this, there are so many settings, tips, suggestions, adds, and the like I have to turn off that its a real pain and takes more and more time during setup.

I bet you that when the big update comes out next week I will be sitting at the system, checking through settings and turning a lot of things off again.

Re: something people should be aware of

Well going slightly off for a sec, earlier this week I did report the issue with narator and search boxes not speaking contents or up and down arrow presses.

I submitted feadback, I also tested turning off all the services and startup items and running in core mode I even turned the ms security startup program and it still did the same thing.

One thing I did solve was that disk cleaner then was able to appear and clean fully without stopping speech, and also was able to clear updates and such however obviously something happened because after a bit I thought I would just continue cleaning when I switched the system back to full mode.

I quit disk cleaner, set everything back and shut down except the system refused to shut down.

On restart it just sat there in a weird mode till I turned it off.

It then started normally enough though slow and after another cleaning run I noticed the items to clear updates etc just did not exist so who knows at any rate interesting, the system is now working and that issue will probably not effect me ever again unless I need to run another diagnostic run.

So my narator report is in the hub and I can confirm its just the start menu search box that does this the cortana one, the desktop and file and settings boxes are left alone.

Its not that big of a deal its just that start menu search is broken with narator, lets hope the fix goes in the next build.

Then again, the workstation is about 5 years old  4 of those years I have had 10 on but for a brief period it had 7, I guess I will eventually need to reformat which by rights should be easy to do since all data is on another drive so its not like I loose out in fact a couple days loading all those apps back, and bar the standard apps I load on, 7zip, ccleaner, cd burner xp and a few extras who knows.

Are you saying, that if, for example, you down arrow four times from the top of a document, you hear line 9?  I want to be completely sure what you are describing.  Are you talking about what you hear when you use the arrow keys or what you hear when you use screen review commands such as numpad 8 for read current line?

Is word wrap on in Notepad or off?  Is NVDA set to object navigation as the review setting or screen review or something else?

I'm not sure what's causing the problem but I want to be sure what the problem is and how things are set.

Hi Anthony,

On both Windows 8 and 7 machines, and with Notepad Plus Plus, I do not have this issue.  I do have a minor issue wherein when I type a line of text and make a mistake and then go back into the line to edit it after it has been written, sometimes, the line double reads if I press the down arrow key to move to the next line.  I have found that pressing the end key to move to the end of the line and then using up/down arrow keys fixes the problem--a minor inconvenience at worst.

Hi, I started programming this semester myself and notepad plus plus is used in two of my courses. I still prefer droid edit on my phone, but I've used notepad plus plus with nvda versions 2017-2 and 2017-3 on both windows 7 and 10 and have not had the issue you described.

Having said that, Nvda doesn't read me the line numbers. It's possible something looks sketchy on the screen but hasn't effected me yet.

This is pretty basic functionality. I have to think there is some key problem with your system that is causing a failure.

If I can do anything to help you test this, please let me know.

Best,

The problem of Edge opening PDF files is that if there are edit boxes in the
file they do not appear. I tried one with edit boxes and I could not write
in them with edge, but with Acrobat Reader DC I could.
The way to go wround this is to use the application key and open the file in
Acrobat Reader DC otherwise Edge will kick in by default.
Windows was never as aggressive as in 10.

It's not a question of fixing anything. Windows 10 forces certain
things to display using Edge. The user intentionally isn't given a
choice. Microsoft didn't give away Windows for a year for nothing.
Nothing is free. This is to Microsoft's advantage, because they can
charge more to those who advertise on the Windows search feature
using Edge to display results.

As I recall, if you use cortana, (spelling) for searches, Edge is
forced to be used and Bing.

then the next time you tab it will give you the option a check box
to use that program every time make sure it is checked then tab
down to ok and press the enter key.

Now you should be right.

I can only tell you that I think you would have sound since the external device has no relation with the driver used for the internal one.  I'm by no means an expert so, while that is what I think is likely, you may want to wait for other answers.

Hi Gene, I have a similar-ish situation. My Asus laptop uses Realtec HD audio, and when I try and plug in an external speaker or headphones it wants to run a device configuration program, which is not in the slightest bit accessible.

I asked on an Asus forum and the advice was to uninstall the Realtec HD drivers and replace them with the more basic driver that is available on the Realtec website.

Obviously at the point I uninstall the problematic driver I'll loose all sound for installing the suggested driver.

If I get myself one of those USB soundcards, should I then be able to hear NVDA again while I do the driver installation?

My sighted assistance is not very comfortable with anything more complex than emailing :)

It's not a priority because I don't often have the need to use headphones with my laptop, but if there's a way I could then I'd like to do it.

The problem is I think that none of this will now work.
I never did see that issue ever work in xp, only later versions of windows.

Presumably the drivers need to have the correct monitoring and if the drivers are gone then nothing will work. It may well be a usb approach that might break this if the plug and play is still functioning and xp knows of a driver.

Hi Giles

Have you tried accessing the configuration program with Narrator? Also, does your laptop have a single headphone/microphone socket which when you plug something into it asks if it is a microphone or headphones, so it knows if it’s being used for input or output?

Hi Bobby,

This computer ID you are talking about: is this something that you are assigned by the program; do you make it up yourself or is it something you find under system information?

Thanks for any help.

Well I don’t like resilio sync service at all because you have to get a computer pass word to use it.  Butt You should try sync thing.  Sync thing is just like bittorrent sync butt it is web based and you down load it as a zip file and just install it as a portible version.

So.  Ribbons are here to stay and have nothing to do with the issue of outdated software.

I don't like the ribbons as much as I liked menu driven systems.  I had to suck it up and learn it, because my personal preferences do not rule the world and it's obvious that I am not on "the winning side" of the ribbons design decision.  The same applies to the beloved "identities" of Outlook Express.

Those who refuse to eventually acknowledge that they must go with the flow will be drowned.  I really have no patience with that attitude after a certain point, and that point is long past for me when it comes to Windows XP, Outlook Express, and other hangers on to long defunct software.  There are other options, and many of them free, for most of these things.  It's not the job of the rest of the world to try to hold ancient technology together with the proverbial spit and baling wire.  If someone is absolutely stuck in a situation where they have no choice that's one thing, but that's not the typical case.

Saying that "it's only recently that issues cropped up with . . ." is also not relevant.  There come clear tipping points, and when talking about software in excess of 15 years old one should presume that the tipping point has been reached.

Re: How to set Acrobat Reader DC for PDF files

Chris Mullins

Hi
I do not have a problemmaking Acrobat DC the default ap for pdf files. Try doing the following:
1. Press Windows+i, tab into the list of categories, arrow to 'apps' and press spacebar
2. Press tab once, then down arrow once and press spacebar on 'Default apps'
3. Tab down to 'Set defaults by app' and press spacebar
4. In this control panel dialog, press tab once to get into list of apps, then use down arrow to find 'Acrobat DC', when located, tab to and use spacebar to activate either ' 'Set this program as default', which will set Acrobat DC as default for all filetypes it can handle or 'Choose filetypes for this program', which will open another dialog in which you can choose from a list of Acrobat DC filetypes and save the settings.
5. Tab to Ok and exit the dialog, Press alt+f4 to exit control panel, then alt+f4 to exit Settings.

Cheers

The problem of Edge opening PDF files is that if there are edit boxes in the file they do not appear. I tried one with edit boxes and I could not write in them with edge, but with Acrobat Reader DC I could.
The way to go wround this is to use the application key and open the file in Acrobat Reader DC otherwise Edge will kick in by default.
Windows was never as aggressive as in 10.

It's not a question of fixing anything. Windows 10 forces certain
things to display using Edge. The user intentionally isn't given a
choice. Microsoft didn't give away Windows for a year for nothing.
Nothing is free. This is to Microsoft's advantage, because they can
charge more to those who advertise on the Windows search feature
using Edge to display results.

As I recall, if you use cortana, (spelling) for searches, Edge is
forced to be used and Bing.
