You say its in other applications. Is this mainly the context menus? That is often a pointer to some dll not registered if it happens all the time. Also sometimes even the nvda menu itself fails to read.

I don't have that one however, I do have something similar. In firefox, and a bunch of other apps on my machine, nvda doesn't read the menu bars, tab controls, or certain textual areas of windows. Really odd, it happened after installing the most recent set of updates for windows 10 version 1607. Called the Microsoft disability answer desk and its got them scratching their heads as well

Re: More on weird focus events in firefox
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
Yes, luckily in Windows 7 this is still quite rare, but I too have seen it. However it seems very bad in Firefox for some odd reason. I think most save dialogues tend to be part of windows, called by the running software and displayed by that software as and when needed. Sometimes the event telling nvda what to do seems to not arrive and hence the confusion. Going away and back makes nvda re evaluate the screen contents in some way

Re: NVDA Causes Open Office to stop Responding
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
I think you would need to ask them that. However I suspect the uninstaller Open Office are using does not actually put things back as it was correctly, ie not registering dlls or forgetting to restore some to the version it had before. Personally I do not understand why they do not make a portable version and then no registrations changes would be needed. Always updating and messing about with windows system files have caused all sorts of problems. The maths symbols reader for instance is another bit of dodgy software, even Microsofts demo versions of Office can leave things broken. Brian

Re: NVDA Causes Open Office to stop Responding
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
I don't think so actually. I know plenty of sighted people using Open Office and Libra Office with no issues
My feeling on this is that its getting very complicated to hook into processes that are both part of windows and may also be being used by applications. Those with long memories will remember display chain drivers in XP and earlier, where any piece of software that needed access to the screen output had to hook in through a piece of software loaded at boot time. The snag often was that some software did not do this well and the whole thing slowed down or fell over. If you are screen scraping this video monitoring was often the only way to get at content for screenreaders. I can well recall that some upper end graphics cards used by gamers had non standard drivers and the display chain programs never worked right on them. I suspect these days especially with ported programs like Open Office that there are similar issues due to the portability of some of the code to other operating systems. Just my thoughts. Re: NVDA's "Modern" Sounds
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
I think that no matter what you do, somebody will not like it. certainly some very tinny sounding and rattle laptops can have issues with the old ones. However at the moment at least one cannot change the 'logo' bit of music at the start.. I quite like it and it does not impact on start up time, indeed it seems to help you figure out if the machine is running slow as its the first thing to start and multitasks with other stuff.
Also of course beeps for progress bars and updates is a sound generated live in the code, and hence not changeable. I suppose one could ask for this to be done some other way though as its most not subtle. Brian

Re: Weather Plus 4.5 14.09.2017 update available
Hi Gene and anyone else interested,
I have used this add on for quite some time and never had issues
with updating it till this version in Windows 10. It looks like I
was able to update it that time and my city appears in the city
list as the only one, but I get nothing when I hit NVDA+w even
though all check boxes are checked and I should hear something.
The volume appears to be high enough I should hear something as
well. Guess I'll give up on this one this time.

Hi Lisa
is this the first time you have used this add on? If it is and
it is installed use the nvda key + letter n to get into nvda
preferences. Arrow to general settings then down to the weather
plus add on.
n
When you get to the add on a sub menu will come off it and say
nset and manage your settings press the enter key on it.
the next screen will give you a whole eahp of options. The very
first place where it lands will let you put in a town or ciy etc.
In my case i say put hawera then tabbed to a button that says Test
This testing the validity of city woeID entry and find the name of
city assigned, or v then pressed the space bar. It will then come
up with some results. You can then arrow down the results and when
you find the one you want use the tab key so it lands on the ok
button then press the space bar.
it will then take you back to where you typed in the name of the
town or city tab once it will land you on a button that will give
you details to make sure it is the correct town or city tab again
and it will give you the option to add it to the list press the
space bar on it.
You can also keep on tabbing and there will be other options to
choose from just use the space bar to check or uncheck the boxes
you want to hear. make sure you tab to the ok button then press
the space bar for it to take affect.
You can also preset that place as your default when you press the
nvda key + letter W
You can also add more places by repeating the steps to add more
places.
If you say added 4 you can get to them quickly by pressing the
nvda key + ctrl key + shift key + letter W then arrow down the
list to the one you want to hear from with nvda key + W.
hope the above helps.

Re: More on weird focus events in firefox
hello. i sometimes have this problem in many save dialogs. i use shift tab or tab many times and it works. if does not, i press alt tab to go to another application and again return to save dialog and it works! On 9/15/17, Brian's Mail list account via Groups.Io <bglists=blueyonder.co.uk@groups.io> wrote: Below is a log of me trying to save a file to a specific folder in Firefox 55. all was going well as I tabbed around the savedialogue. It then stopped

is on here knows what is going on here, as it seems to be contradicting itself. ie is it desktop or Firefox,it surely cannot be both, no wonder its
silent....

After installing NVDA Open Office stopped responding. I have a Dell Inspiron running Windows 10. Also, I can no longer find NVDA on my computer. I donated 15.00 two times and downloaded NVDA. Now it is gone.
What are the solutions?

Did you set the app to receive breaking news alerts? I don't use
that app, but I've set it up in the past to do this. I primarily
use TW Blue which is a Twitter client.
