Re: Automatic Column and Row Header Reading
Cearbhall O'Meadhra
Tyler,
I normally keep “Tables” unchecked in the document formatting settings in NVDA because NVDA becomes extremely sluggish when it is set and frequently lapses into “Unknown”. When I leave “Tables” unchecked, I can still set the row and column headings and the NVDA response is much sharper.
Does this make sense?

If this bug is a general one, it needs to be corrected but it appears many people use this method for selecting and copying text when the Windows method is available. The Windows method requires less key strokes and should be known because it is a part of Windows and is independent of any screen-reader. Gene

Sam,
Are you able to edit text in each individual cell? If not, that might be a pointer to an Excel option that need to be set
We used to have to make sure that “Allow editing in cells” under the advanced tab in Excel > Options in order to make NVDA work while editing, for example.

Possible bug with NVDA and Notepad++
William
Hi,
For the sake of posting replicated issue on Github, I would like to raise the issue here. I came across a bug: 1. open any txt file with Notepad ++ 2. select a start position by nvda f9 3. press ctrl end to move to end of document 4. press nvda f10 to mark as end position 5. sometimes nvda can perform selection, but will not automatically speak the selected text, whereas sometimes nvda may say unable to select text. I am not sure if this is a bug, or any one can give me any feedback? thanks.

Re: Current status of Tiflotecnia voices?

Hi all,
Sorry for reviving this topic. But will the new voices be added in the future? I'm asking this because it seems that some new voices are missing. Like, Nathan, and some more new voices that I couldn't remember off the top of my head. They are all in vocalizer expressive V2.2. Again, will the Tiflotecnia's vocalizer gets these voices in the future? If these more voices added, will the customer require to pay for the upgrade? Many thanks.

Good pickup, yes you need to have NVDA set to report "tables", as well as column and row headers in NVDA's document formatting for this to work. It's not well documented so I will ensure this is updated and noted in the User Guiide and Excel module. If you otherwise prefer to have reporting of tables off, you can setup a configuration profile for Excel which has this setting enabled: 1) Open Excel 2) Press NVDA+control+p to open the configuration profiles dialog 3) press alt+n to create a new profile 4) Leave the name and press tab once to "use this profile for". 5) press the right arrow to move to "Current application (Excel) 6) Press Enter. That creates the profile and now any change you make to NVDA's settings while in Excel will be saved in this profile rather than the "normal" profile. Regards Quentin.

Sam,
Have you tried setting a heading row (for the columns beneath it) and/or a heading column (for the row to the right of it) in Excel itself? I have found that this tends to work, and across screen readers, better than doing said definition via the screen reader itself. Object review is the default. You should still be on it. I doubt being in object review will help your problem, but if you are in it and use read current line, the location will be read correctly.

If you are using the desktop layout, issue the command NVDA key numpad 1. If you hear no previous review mode, you are in object navigation. If you don't know, numpad 1 is the farthest key to the left on the numpad on the row above the numpad NVDA key. Gene

If yes, try restarting NVDA with all add-ons ff (NVDA+Q, then select "restart with add-ons disabled"). There isn't any change concerning first letter navigation on the desktop or in a list of files. Speech other than that is working fine. But it would be nice to move by the first letter navigation. So if anyone has any ideas how to get it back I would appreciate them. I have NVDA on two three computers and all works fine. Thanks for responding to my questions. -----Original Message----- From: nvda@nvda.groups.io <nvda@nvda.groups.io> On Behalf Of Joseph Lee Sent: Sunday, July 12, 2020 3:15 PM To: nvda@nvda.groups.io Subject: Re: [nvda] nvda not speaking program/icon on the desktop when pressing first letter Hi, I suspect NVDA is not being notified about selection changes, sometimes caused by an add-on or a setting interfering with what NVDA is supposed to do. To test, try restarting with all add-ons disabled, and if that solves the issue, we can move onto isolating individual add-ons. It gives one specific condition where there is no speech, when you use first letter navigation in a list. Since there is speech, the possible solutions don't apply. I have no reason why no speech occurs at that one specific time. Using read current line should easily solve the problem and the command takes almost no time to execute. It may be possible to find the reason by examining the log but there are some problems that are so minor and so easily worked around that they aren't worth solving, though you may, if you wish to, pursue it, of course. One that his speakers are plugged into the right whole and turned on. On the computer the sound is not muted. Press the windows key + letter R to bring up the run dialogue then type in sndvol then press the enter key. The next screen that comes up will have the master volume make sure it is right up so you can hear it and not down on zero. There is a box under it if checked it will mute the sound so make sure it is un checked. If you can see nvda is running but not talking under that section I think there is a slider to make it louder there. Also check when nvda is running that under the synth settings in nvda you press the nvda key + ctrl key + the letter S to bring it up. Make sure under the synth section that it has a synth there and not set to no speech if it is set to that change it to e speak or another synth package. When on the desktop or in a list of programs or files, NVDA doesn't speak the name of a program or file when pressing it's first letter. However, the cursor does go to the location. I know this by arrowing up and then down. I tried maximizing but didn't cause any change in behavior. Any ideas to resolve the problem? Thanks in advance.
