Actually, if you go into your NVDA menu with NVDA+N, then up arrow, you should eventually see Win 10 Essentials. If you go in there, there should be a button to check for updates.

I still unable to use vocalizer driver. Everytime I run NVDA, the vocalizer driver will launch immediately about 10 windows, There is no way to fix. I can't restart my computer, can't press the start menu, etc. One thing I can do is to hold down the power button and press it again to turn on.

Things I already did:

- Uninstalled NVDA and delete its folder in %appdata%,
- reinstalled it,
- After restarting, I installed Vocalizer driver and voices,
- Then restart NVDA again, and everything was the same,
- Then I remember that I have  portable NVDA with the same vocalizer in my D:,
- I tried to go to D:\Portable NVDA\userConfig\addons, and manually delete the vocalizer expressive driver,
- After that, go to %appdata%, and delete vocalizer driver addon,
- reinstalled it, and everything was the same.

Hi!

Given that just about all computer users know how to navigate HTML pages, since that’s what we all do on the Internet, maybe that is a better option.

As for CHM, which several people here have mentioned, I admit I hadn’t heard of it till I read this thread, as I’m not very tech-savvy. But it’s possible that at some point I have read a CHM help file without realizing what it was.

If you want these help files to be used by people without much technical knowledge, they’re probably better off with something they are familiar with, and, as I mentioned, all of us are familiar with HTML, unless we are very new to using computers in the first place.

Just my two cents’ worth, but each to their own opinion on this!

I know how to use CHM. But it seems that the CHM viewer is deteriorating. It’s not that we don’t know how to use it (granted there may be some who don’t), but my friend can’t read content in CHM documents that I compile (the actual HTML content is just showing a blank page for him on every item), and it seems to be the 64-bit version of the viewer gives me a treeview of items that NVDA reads as “unknown”. I find the index useful in large programming references and such, but usually a table of contents suggests a recommended order to read something in. And that’s fairly hard if all you have is a treeview with a bunch of items that read as “unknown” and that can’t even differentiate whether an item is opened, closed or on its own...I only ever had that problem since switching to 64-bit Windows. On 32-bit, I could read CHM files with absolutely no issues whatsoever.

I think the problem with some forms of help using the split screen method is that sometimes the layout of help is not that optimal and you have to keep going back and forth to see if what you want is under some other heading.
Of course you need to do this too in html help but you are saved the irritation of switching panels all the time, you just go back to the main index in the page.

Funny you should bring this up. I found that some web pages even in espeak are switching languages for some texts and links when its not appropriate at all. Really irritating and cannot decide if its actually the browser or nvda or the web site.
It will go away in miy case if I turn all refs to automatic language switching off in the dialogues. If you have any personal configs set up as a profile do not forget to check those too.

You don't have to work with these sliders and it's easier and more efficient not to. From the top of the page, type the letter b until you get to something like the pause button. That will mean that you are in the player interface. Turn off browse mode with NVDA key space.
use up and down arrow to raise and lower the volume
. To jump forward or back in a playing track, use right or left arrow.
Use main keyboard numbers 1 through nine to jump from one percent of the file to various percents.
1 is ten percent. 2 is twenty percent, etc. 0 starts play over from the start of the file and if the file has finished, pressing 0 will start play at the beginning again. I haven't tested to see if other numbers resume play, once over, from those percents.

On the you tube web page, there's a couple of sliders for the player.
the first one is for moving backward and forward through the file you
are watching, and the second one is the one for increasing and
decreasing the volume. When you land on these sliders, NVDA will go into
browse mode initially but you can tab through the controls until you
find the volume slider and adjust it to your liking. Hope this helps.

If posting a link to dropbox on your system always change the 0 at the end of the link to a 1, you may need to delete the leading 0 if its 01, and then it forces the receiving browser to download the file and not go to the dropbox web site.

it is just as easy to find the link then use the applications key then if using mozilla fire fox arrow down to save link as then press the enter key.


it will then give you the option to save it to where you want then save it to your pc. If internet exploder it will be save target as etc.


That is the way i usually do it on all files it may depend if you press the enter key on it wheather it gives you the option to open or save as well.

This may be on other websites.

I will go back and check to make sure i put the message there i might of just said tested on a windows 7 and 10 machine with various sound cards. easy to amend later on.


When you click on the drop box link unless they have changed it you need to change the mode .


I just had a quick look and the first page says about signing up to a drop box account so you go to the bottom of it and say no and continue. the next screen that comes up will give you the options to download and play a file. I think you have to change modes to see the options or when it just goes into this screen press the tab key then change mode.


Then it is a matter of locating those sections.


The other way if i remember right is locate the link on the page press the applications key arrow down to either save target as or save link as . A save dialogue box will come up. make sure it says the file name as in most cases it is mp3 then save to some where easy to find.


I do have a drop box account but i am guessing this is what others see as well?


I could add directions up there or do a audio file if needed to new users?



I am wondering also I think it was Brian said it did not work did he apply the settings first before he pressed enter on the ok button. Otherwise it may not have done it I am guessing.

he needs to do it both times I could ad in about it but i usually look for ther buttons just in case like that.

How to access safe mode in Windows and exit it with the NVDA screen reader

What is safe mode?
Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows that starts your computer
in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run
Windows are started. Safe mode is useful for troubleshooting problems with
programs and drivers that might not start correctly or that might prevent
Windows from starting correctly.

To use NVDA in safe mode

You will need to install a registry patch first. This file can be found at
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jr72u3sk7p0za2r/Activate_Sound_in_Win10_Safe_Mode.zip?dl=0


After it has been installed it will allow you to use NVDA in safe mode. This
has been tested on a Windows 7 and Windows 10 machine and with quite a few
different sound cards.

Directions to go into and out of safe mode in Windows

You can reboot in to safe mode by doing the following:
Press Windows plus R and type msconfig and hit Enter
Press Ctrl plus Tab to get to the "boot tab"
Tab to "safe boot" and check the check mark/check box.
Tab to "base video" and check it as well.
Tab to the OK button and press it. You should get a prompt to restart the
computer to apply the changes.
If you select "restart now" your PC should restart into safe mode.

Please note: When the registry patch has been installed, when you go into
safe mode, you will have sound and be able to use the NVDA screen reader.
Message you will get while in safe mode
To confirm you are in safe mode, you can use the NVDA key + letter B. Below
is the type of message you will get as an example on a Windows 10 machine.
Safe Mode Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 16299.rs3_release.170928-1534)
Safe Mode



After finishing your PC job with safe mode, do the same steps above,
but this time uncheck the two check boxes above for both safe boot, and
base video; and press OK and restart. Your PC will restart to the normal
mode.

This happens every so often. To my mind it is usually due to the isp you are with subscribing to a black list service of mail servers. If the mail server used by a mail list gets onto one of these the isp bounces the emails to you back and the system then uses a different server to email you the information about it. Then you need to take the action and attempt to restart the email list again, in the hope that the black list listing has been removed by then. In the meantime you have of course lost access to the list so cannot read it unless you read it via the web site.
Its quite good and works well. However sometimes ISPs tend to not bounce and simply dump emails and this can be a real problem as the other end does not know you are not getting the emails.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. I do have firefox, but need chrome for some of
my work. I was just trialling whether I could move to chrome with
everything, and noticed a few differences in screen reading ability. So, the
answer is: two web browsers, just use whichever one works best at the time
for the webpage being used [smile].

With the combo boxes, I have found that if you use the numpad move to focus,
then, in object view, focus on the combo box with nvda key and numpad 5,
press numpad enter, you can open it, then, use 4 or 6 to go to what you want
in the box, press mumpad enter, and it will be selected. Just a bit of
useful finding, simply by accident while fiddling around.

I don't know but there is also a ticket about combo boxes collapsing in
Chrome and being unable to be sure what is selected too. maybe a case for
Firefox portable to be on the system, ie the old version.

boxes in google chrome, such as the ones found on shopping sites when
ordering, so that you can't check how many of each item you have
ordered.

Is there a work around for this, or is this just a glitch with google

I don't think it’s a good idea to have the voice be painfully slow, as accomodating new users might be for more experienced users.  I would suggest doing what I do in tutorials.  I have the speech speak at a good rate for experienced users, but I repeat things that are said so the inexperienced listener will know what has been said.  I haven't done a tutorial in quite some time and I don't recall if I say everything or just about everything the speech says, but I repeat everything as I move through a dialog, a ribbon, a menu, etc.  I repeat everything that matters so users can tell what they need to know.  My system accomodates both new and experienced synthesized speech users..

OK, 1 make sure the voice is slow enough for new users. Most of the
tutorials I hear on the internet are using voices running way too fast.

Is Edge really any better for pdfs than Adobe? The big issue is as we all

nvda to use a version of Python better able to cope with newer systems, and
this is bound to start throwing unexpected spanners into the air to fall who
knows where for a while, so its a good time to get folk used to diagnosing
and working around any problems by giving them a bit of a lesson in the
logic to find where problems might be etc.
 Just my few penneths worth.

The message basically just says email's bouncing, it could be because your inbox is or was full or some other sort of delivery problem, so it's stopped sending mail and if it keeps happening you'll be unsubscribed from all groups.io groups. Then there's a link to unbounce. Happened to me twice in the last week.

How can we just get rid of the driver for vocalize?
I installed the driver thinking I could  have  used one of the voices as a trial.

Then I figured out we can not just try it, and get the error message the vocalize driver can't be loaded, you have to have one of the voices installed.

I still unable to use vocalizer driver. Everytime I run NVDA, the vocalizer driver will launch immediately about 10 windows, There is no way to fix. I can't restart my computer, can't press the start menu, etc. One thing I can do is to hold down the power button and press it again to turn on.

Things I already did:

- Uninstalled NVDA and delete its folder in %appdata%,
- reinstalled it,
- After restarting, I installed Vocalizer driver and voices,
- Then restart NVDA again, and everything was the same,
- Then I remember that I have  portable NVDA with the same vocalizer in my D:,
- I tried to go to D:\Portable NVDA\userConfig\addons, and manually delete the vocalizer expressive driver,
- After that, go to %appdata%, and delete vocalizer driver addon,
- reinstalled it, and everything was the same.
