Re: Need tips and tricks on the use of Google Docs with NVDA

Hi David,

I have two questions for you. First, from your experience, which browser is more reliable with Google Docs, Google Chrome or Fire Fox? Second, I am following the AFB tutorial to learn how to use google docs with Fire Fox, and it says that by hitting control alt z will enable or disable screen reader support, However, When I press control alt z, I get no feedback to know if the screen reader support is toggled on or off. What do you think I am doing wrong?

Cheers,

Ibrahim

Google Docs is very accessible with NVDA. I use Docs a lot, to produce well formatted documents. If you use Google’s commands to navigate, you will have a great experience. Let me know what you need help with.

A few questions

Akshaya Choudhary

Hello guys,
I have a few questions:
1.    Is there a way to have different punctuation settings for different voices or synthesizers? I think it can be done by creating a different configuration profile. But, my NVDA starts behaving weird if there are more than one configuration profiles. So, an alternative is welcome.
2.    I have 6 voices available in my Windows One Core synthesizer, but when I switch to SAPI 5, I can only access two of those voices. What could be the reason? The two available SAPI 5 voices are English US voices. The other two set of voices that are only available in One Core synthesizer are Indian English and Hindi.
3.    In Phonetic Punctuation add-on, some audio rules stay active regardless of the set punctuation level. For example, if Phonetic Punctuation is turned on, I hear sounds for ellipsis; left and right parenthesis’s; and editable field, even when my punctuation level is set to none.   Any suggestions to fix this?
Also, can there be a setting allowing the users to set  independent punctuation levels for the audio rules?
I shall be grateful for any feedback.

Hello.

This is not possible in the NVDA core, because the APPI used by the old add-on is... Well, a legal situation.

Does this happen for all links or does it only happen on a few sites. Also, are you using the current version, or do you use pre-release or prevent updating. I haven’t heard of these issues except in some very specific design errors on a site, but I have been concentrating on Firefox recently.

Hello list,

I'm having a problem with nvda only inside of chrome. Before while
surfing the web with chrome I could tab onto a link or a menu item and
then press enter and it would bring me to the next page or download the
file of the link I click on. Now all of a sudden if I tab to an item and
then press enter nothing happens. I have to use the arrow keys to land
on the item or link press enter and it then works.
Any ideas of why tabbing to something doesn't work anymore but if I
arrow to it it will work. Any help is greatly appreciated. This is
really messing with my work flow.

I've seen web page editors that are not properly accesible.  Write your message in Notepad, then paste it into the text area of the web page.  If you can't read it when browse mode is off, you can probably read it to verify it is there when browse mode is on.

Hello all,

I don't know if the topic like this already created, but I couldn't find
it somehow. If this had already been created in the past, I am really sorry.

Anyway, I was browsing audiogames.net forum, and when I want to reply to
a topic. So I went into a  text area so that   I can input some texts
into it. However, when I arrowing up and down to review what I have
typed into the box, NVDA acts like there is nothing in the text box at
all. Also sometimes NVDA report the same character twice when I tried
edeting character by character by using the left or right arrow keys.

Does anyone know what could be the problem? And if so, is there a fix
for it currently?

Thanks.

Re: reading what seems to be a blank email

To see how the program is set and change it, open the view menu, down arrow to message body as and press enter.
Down arrow through the choices.  NVDA calls the items radio menu items, which makes no sense but that's how they are presented to NVDA.  If plain text is checked, you are reading mail in plain text.  My guess is that you are trying to read an HTML message that doesn't have a text variation included and are not seeing anything.  To read the message as HTML In the safest way, up or down arrow to simple HTML and press enter.  The menu will close and you are now reading mail as simple HTML.  That means that the HTML in messages used for formatting them is being used, but nothing in the HTML of any message can run.  So there is no chance of malicious code that may be in a message running.  Use that setting to read mail and you will be able to read any message like this along with all your other mail.

I was not sure if this should come on NvDA or thunderbird but am trying
on the NVDA list since I am using NVDA as the screen reader while using
Thunderbird as the mail program. For some reason in the past couple of
weeks a group from which I receive emails from has changed their format.
It acts like it is an image yet I can read it on the Polaris Mini
notetaker. Is there a command I can use to try to get NVDa to read the
email to me? I am willing to forward the email to one of the programmers
for NVDA if you would like to look at it to see what is happening. I am
using the latest version of NVDA and Windows 10 on my laptop.

I would much prefer to be able to read the emails on the laptop than the
notetaker because I would like to access the link in the email from the
laptop.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance that I can receive.

Thank you so very much.

Control Usage Assistant, GoldWave, Resource Monitor 20.06 #addonrelease

Hi all,

Version 20.06 of the following add-ons are now available:

  • Control Usage Assistant: NVDA will no longer appear to do nothing or play error tones when you press NVDA+H when focused on certain web elements in browsers such as Chromium Edge.
  • GoldWave and Resource Monitor: localization updates.
  • All three include Flake8 work, and you should notice no changes whatsoever from that.

As always, these releases are available from community add-ons website and through Add-on Updater.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Almaric,

I haven't encountered this myself.  Have you tried other PDF files?  If you restart NVDA with add-ons disabled does it still happen?

If you could confirm those things, and then send me a copy of a PDF file to info@..., I can have a look.  Include a brief description so I know what it's about.

Quentin.

I’m on the lookout for a fine pdf reader which isn’t adobe. I’ve come across foxit reader who advertise themselves being quite accessible on both JAWS and nvda.

I’ve tried to read 2 pdf files with it, but all spaces seem to have been removed. Neither nvda nor jaws seems to be able to detect the spaces in the text. The same pdfs work just fine on adobe or Microsoft edge, so I’m confident the file itself is not the issue.

Did anyone have the same problem so far and has any solutions? I’ve used the latest release of both nvda and foxit reader.

Best,

Hello everyone,

First, thank you everyone for celebrating the news noted on recent In-Process blog post. I accept the All-American Team recognition solemnly, knowing that it means a lot to the blindness community, and for folks here, to the wider NVDA community.

Second, people who regularly visit NVDA community add-ons website may have noticed changes for entries such as Add-on Updater, Resource Monitor, and StationPlaylist. Those keeping an eye on version changes may have noticed a new entry named “20.06”. I’m delighted to announce that version 20.06 for stable channel subscribers is on its way for the following add-ons, to be released next week:

  • Add-on Updater
  • Control Usage Assistant
  • Enhanced Touch Gestures
  • GoldWave
  • Object Location Tones
  • Resource Monitor
  • StationPlaylist
  • Windows 10 App Essentials

For people reading the changelog might be wondering what the following entry means:

Resolved potential bugs with Flake8.

Flake8 is a tool used to check coding style for Python projects. NV Access and code contributors have been using this tool for months so NVDA screen reader source code can conform to certain coding styles used by wider Python community. Flake8 is also useful for discovering potential and actual bugs, as some of the more recent bug fixes in StationPlaylist were due to Flake8 flagging code that may lead to problems.

For many of you, you won’t notice any changes (apart from users of StationPlaylist). Because I know that many of you are impacted by COVID-19 (including physical distancing), I won’t release all eight updates at once – it’ll be done in waves, starting with Enhanced Touch Gestures and ending with Add-on Updater.

Speaking of add-on updates, I must confess that I’m exhausted after going through a confusing spring term in college. Therefore I will not be working on add-on maintenance in June so I can get some fresh air (i.e. taking a break). For users of StationPlaylist and Windows 10 App Essentials, this means no development snapshots in June; fortunately everything required for the next stable version (20.07) is done – all that needs to be done is release it after the break. I’ll still be around on NVDA list – it’s just that I’m taking a break from NVDA world for a while.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph
