Re: NVDA and Using The Edge Browser

Ribbons remind me of using Emacs, the "Extensible, advanced, self-documenting text editor," or something like that. To open the tutorial, you press Control+H, then T. That's how it reminds me of the ribbon, because of the layered keystrokes. It's actually pretty accessible, since everything, that I've come across, has a keystroke attached to it, so if one wants to memorize lists of keys, you can do that. If you like exploring, you can do that too.

I have not read all this thread but in terms of the problem you are experiencing you can get a simple menu system to achieve what you want in Windows and actually many other applications like Outlook.

Specifically for achieving detailed view.

In the File Explorer window focus on any file.

Now hit control plus space to de-select it so no files  are selected in the folder.

Now hit the application key or shift F10 and an  easy NVDA friendly menu system whill open up, abit like the old menu interface of windows. Here you can easily change the view and sort characteristics of  the folder in the way you used to in XP etc.

The same trick works in the Outlook message list as well.

After that you need to set it up so it will work everywhere by copying the set up on the general settings screen.
I also have custom punctuation and levels and lots of voice dictionaries which will be a real pain for some come the next nvda update as Espeak has changed its storage methodology and names from what went before, losing all your espeak dictionary files in some cases.

Yes, What I normally is that I copied the file folder in the roaming directory and place it to my desktop, or flash drive. then once the reinstallation process is done I go directly to paste the addons folder to roaming directory again.

I just looked at that.

Sadly audiogames.net needs a version of firefox over 55.x and some other sites, bandcamp, etc do not work right.

I looked into a user agent module for firefox but couldn't figure it out, so I went back to firefox 56, so I will have to well do whatever I can to handle with 57 or whenever updates come out for 57 I will have to simply not update firefox at all.

If that can be done easily well.

Also, if there are settings in about:config I can turn off then I do that.

Re: fixing error message?

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

It depends how dirty the way they make the software accessible is, Often if a program is important and the maker won't fix it, screenreader makers need to find a working solution outside of the established norms, and that iswhen odd things start to happen. which is what worries me about the Firefox idea and indeed about edge and universal Apps, we may have lived through the reliable access times and be embarking on a new voyage of discovery.

I had a similar issue early on, I was doing some beta map testing for dolphin and found that the reader when running with some games well I could easily get past the game window, ie it just wasn't there, the reader lost focus, I alt tab away from the thing or switched windows and it was gone.

I read online, did a virus scan, did a full reformat.

That did not fix it.

So I pulled up a folder of the test maps, installed them and kept deleting the maps till I found the one that caused the issue.

I was able to report the issue to dolphin and they fixed it.

After that time though I was put off testing maps.

works, install JFW 18. Run it. Then run NVDA. If NVDA still works, you
can assume it's JFW 2018 causing some sort of problem, or you can
install it and run it and then run NVDA and see if it breaks again. To
be fair, I have no answer for you at any step. If you install Windows
and then install NVDA and you still get the error, I don't have the
solution, though I'd register the .DLL files at that point and see if it
fixes it myself. But at least you'll be able to find out where the
problem is. If it's JFW 2018 causing it I'd imagine that would be
something they should provide a fix for, as it could very well affect
other things besides NVDA.

Hi.

Well I just decided to update skype for windows desktops.

It sadly appears that skype the new skype sadly is not even closed
to accessible.

Buttons for contacts and messages appear ok but over that there is a
lot of clickable, clickable, clickables.

The settings tab was completely inaccessible though I was able to
set it up just fine.

I really hope ms is going to keep skype classic, you can get round
this right now by typing skype setup full in google and it will find
you the old one but how long this will stay out is anyone's guess.

I can't even get the right click menu in system tray to work.

If anything else all I really want is ms to keep skype classic
available for those that want it, they don't need to do anything to
it, I'd prefur a simple classic skype for us blind people but
failing that if skype stays as it is well.

I just can't loose skype all my business and other stuff goes
through it.

Its not an option, but if skype becomes crap, I may have to use an
old version or even just no longer use skype because its crap now!

No, I can't even do that, the new interface I just can't get round
it, I have been happily able to reinstall skype classic and update
it with the latest classic version.

You need to look for the classic version now.

This is not on.

And it appears the new app won't run on the latest win10 which
itself is fine but to be honest the classic skype is really accessible.

The version I use is on the following DropBox link.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mnn7953gnqs831o/explorer%2B%2B_1.3.5_x64.zip?dl=0

It is portable. It does not need any install just unzip and put in your programs folder and then create a shortcut to the exe file on the desktop.

I made a shoertcut to it with  control shift E so I launch  windows File Explorer with windows E and this with control shift E  if I want to use this alternative.

It is menu driven so easy to use with a screenreader – to put it into list or detailed view by default you need to go to the prefernces and set it up there.

There is an option there to make it the default over  Windows Explorer there but I personally see no need for this as I like the option of having both.

where do you get file explorer ++ from.

I may actually use that instead of actual windows file explorer that and

classic shell on my boxes, while I really like things, it does seem I

will need to use extras so things work well enough.

The main limitation with using NVDA for me personally with Windows 10 is  the way it can grind to a halt in File Explorer with large  drives. I can tab around but NVDA just will  not respond for ages. This problem has persisted for me through several NVDA versions and through a complete fresh install of Windows .  Luckily having a copy of Explorer ++ on your system can solve this problem nicely if you happen to experience it. I just put a copy of Explorer ++ on my Desktop and I have made a shortcut of control  sshift E to it. NVDA is slick fast and snappy with  this alternative to File Explorer, actually faster and more responsive than Jaws with this particular utility I find.  This may not be an issue for you as NVDA I think is normally responsive to smaller size drives/folders in File Explorer but it definitely cannot cope with my secondary 4TB drive which is nearly full. It flies with Explorer ++ though. Explorer ++ can if you want completely replace File Explorer but I  have not gone this route. It also has file management features not available in Explorer so might be worth having anyway.

> The other great resource is the Screenreader Accessible page at www.nimite.com where you can get up and running with most of all the free programs you will need, including actually NVDA, with one single unattended and silent installer.   Finally the addons repository  and the Accessibility Central website which I believe the moderator on this list supports is also a great resource to get up and running with the Road Tested  NVDA programs sections especially useful.

Are used a Mac since snow leopard. Now, I'm about done. So I will be checking into signature addition machines, even though they seem ungodly expensive and a bit more than I need in terms of horse power extra graphics etc. at least there are decent free alternative screen readers now, something that wasn't true in the past. Having been on the wrong screen reader horse numerous times, from window vision to window bridge to window eyes, I absolutely refuse to keep going down the rabbit hole of the page screenwriter but never keeps up anyway.

I thought I read he was using Windows 7, and the error could be due to so many things of course. often rolling back only works till the offending update is reinstalled by whatever put it on before, so it will pay in the long run to attempt to pin it down I think.

Its unfortunate that so many people either turn off system restore or never check to make sure if its on. it's one thing if people have another way to revert the machine such as disk images or a program like Roll Back. But it's a bad idea not to have System Restore on if you aren't using any reversion program.

You said you registered the files but are you sure they are still there in the first place? Did you check to see if there is anything to register? In Windows 10, as I understand it, you can reload Windows and keep all your programs installed. I don't know anything about that option but I've seen discussions that it is available. My impression is that it places a clean version of
Windows on your machine but keeps everything from the old installation that is necessary to run your already installed programs including the old programs. Others who know more about all this may wish to comment. But I would strongly urge anyone who isn't using another reversion program to make sure system restore is on. I don't know how many times I've seen instances when System Restore would be likely or very likely to quickly solve a problem but it isn't available.

Another option may be System File Checker but I don't know enough about that option to discuss it. Perhaps someone else will.

Re: fixing error message?

I had a similar issue early on, I was doing some beta map testing for dolphin and  found that the reader when running with some games well I could easily get past the game window, ie it just wasn't there, the reader lost focus, I alt tab away from the thing or switched windows and it was gone.

I read online, did a virus scan, did a full reformat.

That did not fix it.

So I pulled up a folder of the test maps, installed them and kept deleting the maps till I found the one that caused the issue.

I was able to report the issue to dolphin and they fixed it.

After that time though I was put off testing maps.

Hi,

It seems they are the same version of platform and the only difference is that they just added the voices synthesis for the fall Creators Update. Though, I seldom use this voices because there some sluggishness to response unlike the eSpeak.
