Forgive me if you already know this but we normally refer to the NVDA
modifier key, the key that identifies a keypress as a NVDA command, as the
NVDAKey or just NVDA when describing commands. Depending on how your
computer is configured, this key is the Insert key on the numeric keypad of
a fullsize keyboard(with numlock off) known as desktop layout and the
capslock key when in laptop layout. In addition you can also set other keys
to be NVDA modifiers as well as the default keys for the layouts mentioned.
Use NVDA+n to open the NVDA menu and find the documentation under the help
sub-menu. Press NVDA+control+k to open the Keyboard settings where you can
set the modifier keys.

Cheers
Chris

how to get focus for the OCR to be the jpg file and not the whole screen.

Re: OCR functionality

hi.
you should only keep it if you use previous versions than windows ten.
if you have ten, nvda supports internal ocr which is available on
windows ten, so, you dont need extra addon for it.
Hope that help, God bless you!

Hello,

With 2017.3 and the NVDA+r key for OCR, is the OCR addon still needed?

Thanks.

Hi,
Think about the following: besides boats, what is another way to cross a river on foot? You need to do a crucial step before you can use OCR, and no, that's not related to performing an NVDA command.

ripping DVDs accessible with NVDA

Dan Beaver

Hi,

I have been using FreemakeVC to rip our DVDs but it seems to be losing effectiveness as time goes.

Does anyone else know of an accessible way to do this using NVDA?  I am hoping for freeware tools being on a limited budget.

I want to  be able to rip DBDs to save them so grandchildren do not destroy the disks, extract movies/episodes so we can drop them on a jump drive to play on our TV that supports these.

Any ideas?

I use cloud ocr actually, I love it, it is very fast. I believe that key is nvda shift r so in my case my add on I have won't conflict. Ok, it's not mine, but there you go. Lol!

Take care

I think also one needs to be aware by then that any add on that only runs in
2017.4 is not going to be installable in xp machines unless its been tested, and I suspect the auto updating of add ons is one of those things that cannot be retro fitted to the current version of nvda. However older versions of the same add on will still be available and will still work as it does now.

year at the earliest.

You will find a checkbox in general settings that you can uncheck to stop
getting update prompts. You can still check manually. I've done this on all
xp machines now, for obvious reasons, and it seems to work. Alternatively
make a note of the update and go and download it manually, run it portably
and see if it works. Certainly don't just trust it if you have a flaky
system, at least not on the primary working machine.

Hello group,

As some of you may know, I spent a long time struggling to get the
vocalizer add-ons
to work and activate, as well as getting all the NVDA settings to my
liking.

Now I see that NVDA is trying to install an update when I run it.

After I finally got everything to work correctly, I don't want to risk an
update that might change anything.

Is there a way to stop the update reminders, or do you think I should just
go ahead and do the update?

Thanks for the advice.

Add-ons Festival: anyone besides I and Derek who'd like to have a chat with users?

Hi all,

As of today, the only people who have signed up for chat sessions with users for the upcoming Add-ons Festival (September 23rd) are Derek (DictationBridge and others) and I. If you know add-on authors who’d like to talk to users via TeamTalk, please tell them to send me a time when they can have chat sessions, with each author (or a team of them) offered a session slot by September 8, 2017. Once I gather requests from add-on authors, I’ll work with session leaders (add-on authors) to come up with a schedule, then announce the final schedule no later than September 12, 2017.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

I don't know if this is a similar issue, but two or three times since I've installed NVDA 17.3 I find that NVDA totally shuts up and can't be cajoled back into action other than a hard reset. It happens when I go into system tray menus.

It's usually when I go into Network Settings to re-connect my dropped internet, and as I came out of it there was total silence. It's maybe 1 in 20 times this happens (I have a very flakey internet because I live in a rural part of Wales). Last night when I went to adjust my volume and as I hit enter to open the volume slider all NVDA sound died.

I can CTRL+ALT+Del to go into shutdown options, which speaks with a different voice (presumably using NVDA, but not my regular settings), but if I cancel out to return back to the desktop I'm back to silent mode. I have a shortcut to NVDA on my desktop titled znvda so that it's the only shortcut begining with a z, so I should be able to jump straight to it. I've also tried using Win+R to run NVDA that way, but neither one will re-start NVDA.

To me it feels more like an operating system error, but I've no real basis for thinking that. It only happens once every three or four days max, but I'm going to turn logging on so that if / when it happens again I should have some more informative insight.

Hope that's helpful even just a tiny amount :)
