I have attached a document. The problem seems to relate to the length of a document and the location of the footnote within longer documents. Thank you! Ralph

Hi, It mostly comes down to what kind of control we’re dealing with. Some require display scraping, others employ console support, still others rely on Java Access Bridge and what not. Cheers, Joseph

Is there any reason that NVDA can't, for technical reasons have a screen echo setting like JAWS does to echo new text as it appears on screen? In JAWS this setting is manually turned on with JAWS key s and you set the screen echo to all using this command. A long time ago, I used to use this option to read text as it changed in Hyperterminal. As I recall, It didn't read the entire screen every time text changed. It would read what changed.
If this command is going to be properly useful, a command to skip lines when reading in this way and another command to move back by line and continue reading from where you moved back or forward to would be necessary. Just having everything new read without move back and forward commands would significantly detract from the feature. But not having such a feature is a limitation of NVDA that may be significant for some users.

I doubt it. NVDA doesn't have any sort of speak all command as JAWS and Window-eyes do to automatically speak text as it appears nor does NVDA have anything like what are called hyperactive Windows in Window-eyes or frames in JAWS that you can set to speak parts of the screen automatically as text changes. NVDA is scripted, if that is the correct way to describe it, to automatically speak new text in some cases such as in the command prompt window. But if you want it to do so in cases where it doesn't, I am not aware of any way to make it do so. You may be able to have someone who works on projects cause NVDA to do what you want in the program. I don't know where you would make such an inquiry.
Meantime, Window-eyes will still be able to be used for quite some time and you may want to use it for this specific purpose while swoitching to NVDA in general. Gene ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Thursday, July 27, 2017 12:22 PM Subject: [nvda] Hearing new text in terminal emulator
Hi, I’m using MicroFocus Reflection terminal emulator. How can I get NVDA to automatically speak the new text that is scrolled onto the screen. I have Report Dynamic Content changes turned on. But NVDA is silent as the new data appears on the screen. Also, the text that I type at the prompt does not speak as I type.
In Window-Eyes there was a method that I tapped into called OnChildClipRendered which tracked all the text displayed to the screen. Is there something similar in NVDA.
I need for the new text to speak as it is displayed to the screen.
Thanks, Chris

new member, just wanted to introduce myself
Ashley Wayne
Hello all, I hope this type of introduction post is acceptable here. Anyway, I’m a very new NVDA user, but am very happy with it so far. I have been a long time jaws user, almost 20 years (now I feel old lol) so the transition has been interesting. I often find myself trying to do jaws commands out of habit lol but I think NVDA is great and I am so appreciative of all the hard work that has been put into it. I look forward to being a part of this list, and hope that all of you have a good day. Ashley

Re: OE Classic is more accessible. Developers test with NVDA.
Were accessibilitycentral.net back online Gene NZ has the step-by-step instructions for reordering columns in Thunderbird using the keyboard (yes, to do drag and drop, but this can be done by keyboard). I never saved those so I don't have them handy.
If anyone should happen to want a copy, and it is the official copy, downloaded about a week before Microsoft pulled it from its website, of the installer for Windows Essentials 2012 (of which Windows Live Mail is a part) you can download it by activating this link. Windows Live Mail 2012 is still a perfectly serviceable e-mail client for POP and IMAP access, which is what most of us are using. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1703, Build 15063 (dot level on request - it changes too often to keep in signature) The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth. ~ Niels Bohr

Strange computer crash on update of master today
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
Windows 7. It got to the update bit, then froze as below.
I had to resort to the dreaded power button, so no real help in the log. However I was also wondering what clipspeak was up to here. Also find that Word occasionally gives out of memory warnings when the clipspeak add on is used to paste or rather voice the paste, but it is not really an issue, just that it thinks it is quite obviously. Re: OE Classic is more accessible. Developers test with NVDA.
Gene
It is not as accessible as Windows Live Mail.
True, the differences in accessibility are minor but they can be very
annoying. The main annoyance is that in Thunderbird, by default, the
subject is displayed first and the name second in the headers. a lot of
people want the name displayed first. But you can't change this from the
keyboard. you have to drag and drop. And how many people know how to
do that, though it can be done.
In Windows Live mail, the order of headings is
fully accessible from the keyboard.
Also, Windows Live Mail has two features that
Thunderbird doesn't. One is the ability to jump to the default inbox from
wherever you are in the message list with the command control I. The
second is that you can read all mail as plain text but if there is an individual
message you want to read as html, you don't have to fool around changing
settings. You can just open the message and use the command alt shift
h. That message will be displayed as html until you close it and all other
messages will continue to be displayed as plain text. if you open the
message you displayed as html again, you will have to issue the alt shift h
command again to cause it to be displayed as html.
If you don't like ribbons, you might not want to
use it, at least the ribbon version. There is an older menu version.
And you have to set message rules on the server if you use IMAP, whereas
Thunderbird allows you to set message rules in the program. There is also
a quirk I won't write about here but if anyone is interested, I'll address it in
a later message about reading mail as plain text. It works fine for that
but there is a quirk you need to know about to do this.

with NVDA. the most accessible email client out there to date. I like it because, like I said, it rests in my dropbox so never have to install it to mmachines. At least the OE developers are working on making OE Classic accessible. I wish they would open source the code though so that is just me. I tried it for a while and like where it is going, even though I am sticking with Thunderbird.

It was not a mess for accessibility. I use
it. Are you saying that because you don't like ribbons? That has
nothing to do with accessibility. That is your opinion of ribbons.

And look at the hoops we have gone through for the one in windows 10, which is just a bog standard email app. Why it seems to be so awkward for people to make email clients better than Tbird when they can write stuff like Firefox and Chrome escapes me. Re: Footnotes in Word Documents
James AUSTIN
Hi Ralph

I have just performed a very quick test. NVDA seems to read the two footnotes I have created without a delay. They were not long, nor did they spread across pages. I could create something, but would you be willing to share a copy of your document with me please? Perhaps we can work out together what is going on? Thanks James

Re: how can i get microsoft spi5engine
Gene
First, did you reboot? If so and it didn't
solve the problem, System Restore would very likely fix it. It may be too
much to hope for, most of the time when I suggest using system restore, it
either isn't turned on on the users' machine or it isn't working properly.
Far more often than a problem with how it works, it isn't turned on. I hope it is in your case. Unless people have some other reversion program, I consider it essential to have System Restore on. If you do, you could run a restore point from before the problem started. Also, what do you mean by SPI? Do you mean
SAPI? Gene?
There may be a way to repair MSAPI5.
Also, it may be that nothing is
wrong with SAPI5. I would think that a general message such as unable to
load synth could mean that there is a problem with what3ever synthesizer is
being used. A synthesizer is not the same as SAPI. SAPI is an
application program interface that will run any synthesizer that is designed to
run using SAPI. So the actual premise of your question, that SAPI is
corrupt or nonexistent if not at all certain. What synthesizer are you
using? Because of the various possibilities and considerations I've
discussed, System Restore, as reluctant as many people are to use it, may well
be the fastest and easiest way to solve the problem. People often cause
themselves a lot of unnecessary problems because they don't want to run System
Restore. There is a certain amount of risk in running it, just as there is
in running any program that works with files in such ways, but most of the time,
if it works, it works properly. If it can't work properly, most of
the time, it lets your system finish booting and displays a message that it
couldn't restore it and that your system has been unchanged.

Reading ggogle docs sheets with nvda
Sylvie Duchateau
Hello all,
Has anyone tips on how to read google doc sheets with NVDA without editing them ? When connecting to the document, I receive the message that I have to press a short cut to have it work with screen readers. But then I don't how to have NVDA tell me the title of each cell. Thank you for any tips on using this. Best Sylvie
