I've felt the braille on the orbit reader. It feels just like a book, firmer in fact. But the refresh is really really slow. About 2-3 seconds to switch lines etc etc. And typing is a pain. The keyboard is very very loud. I have an interview you will have to skim I believe at patreon.com/tffppodcast you can listen there.

Take care all.

All that says about the difference from traditional displays is that "The dots
do not give when the user presses them. The dots on some braille displays
using the traditional technology yield to pressure. The technology used in the
Orbit Reader 20 does not exhibit this characteristic. Once the dot is raised,
it stays raised no matter how hard the user examines it."

and

"The second difference from full-featured devices is that the unit refreshes
differently from previously existing technology. The refresh rate is slower,
and the user can just hear the slight tap as each pin rises from left to
right."

So, I can make some guesses about how the dots work in this device, but it
would still be nice to know for sure.

Does anyone here know what is special or unusual about the Orbit
technology, so that it's (at least in theory) possible for them to
manufacture and sell for such a low price compared to traditional
displays?

I know that the vast majority, if not all, of other Braille displays are
based on piezo-electric actuators to raise and lower the pins (which partly
explains the price, and also explains the physical size of the displays,
and why multi- line displays can't reasonably be made), but I'm wondering
whether anyone here knows what different technology the Orbit is based on
so that it can be made so much cheaper?

Well you can always set feature updates to about a year before they do what they do so you have time to do when you wish.

and if you know one is coming you can turn off updates for a month just remember that to do that again waindows will have to get the latest update and install it else you won't be able to update or anything after a month or during it and your system will remain unable to install or update anything.

However if you need that extra breathing room then I'd do that.

For me on a win10 pro system, the update will officially come on a day where I don't want to.

I will probably set the feature updates to a year, or something which means I can do the update at a time of my choosing manually.

Are you saying it was c cleaner? Its normally pretty benign. I only used it yesterday with no problems.

You can like many programs set it up to be more agressive as at the moment it defaults to not deleting permanently any files of a very recent vintage.
If its registry cleaning you want then Eu free registry cleaner is good but please review its listing before you delete and back upt the registry. This way if it does mess something up you have a way back.
It can with care speed up old tired computers as it removes lots of rubbish the systm has to shove about to get at entries that matter.

It found over 8gb of old files which CCleaner had not.
While this sounds great after restarting my machine it sat and blinked at me for about 30 minutes before coming back to life.

None have malware, the latest versions do have avast but if you are
carefull to read the boxes you can uncheck it and its not exactly
malware though its sneakily put in.

It is interesting to note though that after the ccleaner hack that was
removed and I do wander that with the introduction of avast if someone
managed to partly hack the routeens.

CCleaner was fine before avast came in, it got hacked when avast came in.

If I were piriform I'd ditch avast and go back to where I was before.

They allready have google toolbars and the like and google previde a
lot more for what they take than avast does.

Its normally the dll files associated with the vearious access APIs that get clobbered as the original developer probably never tested if screenreaders wworked before passing the code for distribution. Brian

Hello Noah,

I wenth through a very similar ordeal during the summer.

Sighted people could use the pc, but I couldn't. My husband tried fixing
Windows in all possible ways, with all possible tools. Nothing doing. We
couldn't even restore the pc.

We were two seconds away from formatting, when all of a sudden he
mentioned a couple of programmes that I said I didn't want to be
reinstalled. He removed one, and nothing happened. But when he removed
the other one (a Bible app I needed for a translation I was doing for
our church group), all got back to normal.

Make sure you haven't installed any software recently, which might have
interfered with NVDA, before you do anything dramatic like reformatting.

This is probably not your case, but better be safe than sorry, so I
shared it. It might help someone.

Ciao,

Does device manager complain about any hardware issues or misconfigured bits of hardware? I have seen this error associated with codecs and hardware drivers, particularly in video and audio hardware, but I strongly suspect the error is more like.
Help something is stopping me from doing what I'm trying to do and so I'll give up!

Might be worth running something like ccleaner over it but I'm not confident its going to be that simple. What does a look at the updates record look like, do you see a litany of failed updates?
If so then, there is probably some kind of registry corruption.
Most of the times many see this error is when they have not used K-Lite pack or other codecs and attempt to play certain video files on the machine. From what you describe though I think its more subtle.
Not having a working windows 10 machine at present I'm not sure what else to suggest. Does this affect the working of the current system or just when you want to update the machine?

Re: Issues with Windows 10 upgrades

If that does not work, as far as doing the upgrade, then the only other suggestion I have is doing a clean install using the bootable media you'll create from the ISO.

Of course, that means:

  1. Take a full system image backup of your existing Windows 10 system with the tool of your choice.  Though, since the actual Windows system image backup utility disappears with Version 1709 I would choose a third party tool such as AOMEI Backupper, EaseUS ToDo Backup Free, Paragon Backup & Recover, or Macrium Reflect.
  2. Take a separate backup of just your user data files, as you'll need these to copy back over to the newly installed Windows 10.  I believe EaseUS and Paragon both have features that allow you to take just user data backups and restore them with ease.  I use Macrium, and it doesn't.
  3. Download and install Belarc Advisor, run it, and keep a copy of the resulting report for reference after the new Windows 10 is installed.  The reason I do this is that I almost invariably forget exactly what software I have installed on my computer over time.  The "Software Licenses" and "Software Versions & Usage" sections of the report tell you precisely what programs you've installed and gets their license keys as well.  It's also a good way to take stock of what you really need to reinstall and what you can toss because you're just not using it.  I always focus on the "Software Licenses" section because the "Software Versions & Usage" section includes all of the "bloatware" that came with your system, utility programs for stuff like your printer/multi-function, etc., and can be overwhelming.  It's still something you need to be aware of since the information there can sometimes be useful.
  4. Use the bootable media to do a completely clean install of Windows 10, then do what needs doing to get your user data and the programs you need back on that clean slate.
  5. As soon as number four is completed take another full system image backup so that you have a baseline of your clean system to recover from should you need to.  When any of the updates apply to the system that change the build number that's a good time to take your next full system image.  That or if you spend an afternoon installing a bunch of new software and you'd tear your hair out if you had to sit down and do it all again if you had a system failure and only had an image made that predated doing all that work.

That is a useful feature if someone's program uses greater than signs for
quoted material. I don't know how many programs don't use such signs.
Windows Live Mail doesn't and I wonder if Outlook does. If neither of
these
programs use such signs, then a good deal of the usefulness of the

is defeated. Also, I played with the feature many years ago. I don't
recall if this might have been because I was using a very slow old

slowly, and thus caused annoying delays while waiting for the unfiltered
material to be found.

For me, it's simple. If there are greater than signs at the top of a

I've
already deleted and moved on. If I only got a few emails a day, and/or it

agree
that a feature like this would be good for NVDA. I never knew WinEyes had

Hi Sean,

Window-Eyes has a great feature called Line Filter. You can tell it to
ignore all lines with a string of chars at the beginning of the line. So
when anyone bottom posts, I just switch on line filtering and it ignores
lines beginning with the greater than sign.

I don't know if JAWS has it, but it would be nice to have it in NVDA too.

Well I really do wander if they find it easier to bottem post.

Its not blind vs sighted as such its probably the way they like their
screens.

For example I have family which really like their threaded messages
threaded.

They like to see the old messages first so they know what they have sent
and

they can't remember what they typed previously.

For us, I guess that would work, except we can't scroll to the start of
the

new content as such like this because our software just won't do it in a
easy way.

For the sighted its a quick mouse wheel flip my family do it all the
time,
they do it without thinking just like breathing.

For us, we rely on our keyboards and screen readers, and to be honest I
never look at what is below if I don't need to which could be a
disadvantage.

We also have to get used to the > >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> signs the lower
and lower down we get down the message tree.

So for us top posting is the most accessible.

However we probably do lose some info over what was before.

I can't say I have responded to a message without reading below first.

I never do so I loose things.

For me I respond to something if I know what it is or if its 1-2 days old
maybe but I could be out of thread by the time I respond to a huge email
list.

A lot of techs I know thread and folder cluster their mail.

A few friends don't do this, for myself coming from dos, I read and
delete
all my mail.

If its important I save it in a text file with the message in it and
whatever.

If the email database corrupts or the system crashes or something I
reformat

and move on.

My data is mostly backed up, it includes text of important files and the
like.

I realise I will get bit in the ass one day but I barely have to deal
with
important stuf and now with dropbox it means I can continue as I am till
the

world ends.

On the other hand, rarely have I needed the net during a system outage
that

is critical.

Or at a critical point.

But I guess I am lucky.

Being a freelance tester means I just don't get the work I usually get
and
that means I have time to waste if I so choose which wouldn't be if I had

to

bother with critical data all the time.

Nah, I think it's more related to vi vs. sighted. On all vi lists,
top posting is the thing, on most sighted lists, bottom posting is
it. I've seen folks yelled at multiple times for not bottom posting
on several sighted lists. But on at least one list I'm on,
(thankfully, one I don't post on very often), folks get all bent out
of shape if you top post. It's bottom post, or not at all in their
opinion. A complete waste of time in my opinion, but nobody asked me.

Please don’t bottom post. Post at the top of the messages. If you
bottom post, people won’t see your reply. They won’t wade through
five or more messages to finally find yours and many people think
you mistakenly sent a blank message.

If you need help in how to top post, ask here.

Hello,

Forgive me if I have misunderstood, but surely there cannot be a
genuine NVDA add on for the voices which I wil not mention as they
are a banned topic? Code factory Vocaliser may be legal, but not
the other, I had to pay for my Vocaliser voices and they cost me
about "£70 years ago, these are now available as a stand alone
item and not tied to NVDA.
For those who just cannot afford extra voices, the Microsoft ones
are quite good and are, of course, free with the Microsoft system.

As to the illegal subject, why anyone would want these outdated
voices beats me.
Take care.

As I stated in an email a few weeks ago when this person started
posting on the list, he will continue posting nonsensical
messages, off topic messages, and violate list rules until he is
removed. He apparently doesn't pay much attentionn to messages in
reply to his questions and will continue repeating things over and
over until stopped. Moderation is the least of possible solutions
to this situation.

Good luck Nimer and Gene!

I doubt it is intentional rudeness. I would say that people

Repetitive questions, the same question four times in a month
or even twice in a month or six months, should simply be
ignored.

It is not useful to have a debate on list about Chikodinaka
Nickarandidum Oguledo or his posts. If such unproductive
debates continue, I shall lock all threads where such debates
begin.

If Mr. Chikodinaka Nickarandidum Oguledo is too outrageous, I
shall moderate him. Moderation means that I shall see every
post from him and have to approve each post before it reaches
the list. If I do that, I shall simply not approve repetitive
questions nor questions that in any way, promote sites where
illegal activity occurs. .

I'm explaining all this because Mr. Chikodinaka Nickarandidum
Oguledo sent a post yesterday in which he seemed to indicate
that he didn't know what being moderated means and because
there may be other list members who don't know.

I am not the list owner and if he wishes to deal with this
matter differently, that is what he will do as list owner. I've
stated what I will do unless the owner wishes something
different to be done.

Also, on further consideration, I've changed my mind about how
long moderation will last. It will last at least two months and
whether it is lifted will depend on the kinds of posts Mr.
Chikodinaka Nickarandidum Oguledo sends for approval.

Issues with Windows 10 upgrades

Mallard

Hello all,

My machine (a desktop from HP, which was bought refurbished, and has 12GB of ram at the moment) doesn't seem to want to upgrade to Creator.
It has been attempiting to do the updates, but every time it says there's an error, and can't complete the procedure.

It gives me the following error:

Error: 0x8007001f

I searched for the code on teh web, and so did my husband, but we didn't come up with anything viable.

Has anyone, by any chance, experienced somehting like this, and how did you solve it, if you did at all?

Thanks, ciao,
Ollie

Re: Windows 10 is Very, Very Broken

Mallard

Hello Noah,

I wenth through a very similar ordeal during the summer.

Sighted people could use the pc, but I couldn't. My husband tried fixing Windows in all possible ways, with all possible tools. Nothing doing. We couldn't even restore the pc.

We were two seconds away from formatting, when all of a sudden he mentioned a couple of programmes that I said I didn't want to be reinstalled. He removed one, and nothing happened. But when he removed the other one (a Bible app I needed for a translation I was doing for our church group), all got back to normal.

Make sure you haven't installed any software recently, which might have interfered with NVDA, before you do anything dramatic like reformatting.

This is probably not your case, but better be safe than sorry, so I shared it. It might help someone.

Right now, firefox comes up to read the NVDA user guide.
