Good point. I stay in my Thunderbird inbox for my Spectrum email 100 percent of the time when the machine is on.

It makes more sense to just turn off speech in your screen-reader.  Both JAWS and NVDA have commands to turn off speech.  I would imagine other full feature screen-readers do as well.  If not, simply go to the start menu by pressing the Windows key once, then pressing escape.  You will be on the start button.  We don't know what is causing the problem.  Unselecting the item may or may not stop the behavior, but then you have the inconvenience of having to remember to select it again if you want to use it when you return to the computer.  It's better to just turn off speech or not be on the desktop altogether since unselecting and then reselecting something is so foreign to what is generally done.

Hi Sarah:

If you are leaving your system on for a long time during which you are
not using it, you can try going to your desktop and pressing
control-spacebar.  This will unselect everything on the desktop.

Will you have to type in this command using 64 instead of 322 if you have a 64 bit version of WIN 10 like I do?

Hmm, the trouble I'm having, is that I've saved albums in spotify.

Now when going to my albums, i only see something about a grid. With both NVDA and Jaws.

I don't know how useable the desktop app is.  You can experiment.  The player you can use on the site itself, which comes up and plays automatically when you play something is accessible.  I don't know how many other features on the page, following other users, creating playlists, are accessible.  You can play albums or individual tracks and playlists others have made.

I'm not sure if the desktop app provides better audio.  The free Internet site player produces alright audio, but if you are using good equipment, you will hear a certain amount of thinness because it doesn't use all that high a bit rate for the free version.  I don’t know if the player currently uses Flash or html5.

There are keystrokes for moving through a track and from jumping forward or backward from one track to another.  I don't remember what they are on the web site.  Don't ever try to change the volume in the web player.  I don't know if it has been fixed but when I tried it a long time ago, it didn't work correctly and got stuck on a very low volume.

The old desktop player may be easier to use than the newer desktop player.  You have to use object navigation.  The newer desktop player doesn't require object navigation.  It's more or less a web pag3e Interface but when I tried it a good while ago, a good deal of it wasn't properly accessible. and it appeared to me that some or many features couldn't be used. it will constantly upgrade itself unless you are successful in stopping it from doing so using a procedure I saw in a discussion forum.  If you want to experiment with the perhaps two or three years old player, let me know.  In that player, most features are inaccessible but you can listen to music and move among tracks and within tracks.  When I compared, the free version produced a little better audio than the web player free version and a little better audio than the free newer desktop application.   To me, the improvement mattered.

If it is fairly useable has any one on the list done a tutorial for it? either written or audio? If there is one could you point me in the right direction please.

Yes, but I assume as its a trial from Microsoft, does this mean they are going to sell the service.
Secondly is this maybe what Microsoft are using in their seeing AI Apple I phone app?
If it is and its going to be charged for its a bit mean to be not saying so, and giving the app away for nothing.

I think this is one the author should be running to the add on community and the devs of nvda with as the latter may well have the ear of Microsoft more than we do.

Unknown seems to be a catch all for when something is not understood by nvda.

Re: Installation problem

No but I've just been having a very strange quirk on my current master snapshot installed copy. When its updated, it will not reboot itself. appearing to hang at some in between closed and reboot status. Turning off the add ons seemes to stop it but that is hardly ideal, also even though it hangs, if you can get it to boot another copy, which takes an age it seems, then boot the updated copy, it works as if it ts fine. which makes me think something is stopping the shut down from the install file itself. Have a look at the last few messages in the dev list today. I'm still at a loss, and seeing as I cannot get it to do it always to order its not much good making it an issue. I had thought it was the synths mentioned in that series of emails, but I've since managed to induce the situation with boot of them suspended. The other add onse make no difference either, but if all are off its reliable. Strange indeed. I might try your suggestion. which folder in which location did you remove for the installed copy I do not seem to have the original thread on this one.

Hmm, interesting. Not seen this but maybe a file was locked in that version, insofar as trying to replace the folder was concerned. I've often found that a complete restart of the machine can clear this sort of annoying problem.
Many people tend to only put laptops to sleep or hibernate which tends to , at least in the latter case preserve the state of things exactly as they were, and this can be a problem.

Hi

usually in most cases it would be a uac screen that would come up. the
portable version would not be able to see it only the installer version.
when it comes up it or you would use the alt key + letter Y if i remember
right so it keep on installing it.

the other thing is your anti virus could be stopping it? but if it is the
one that comes with windows i do not think it would be.

You could always start up narrator on th ewindows 10 creators version use
the ctrl key + windows key + the enter key to start him up. Make sure when
you go to plug in the portable version then go to start it hopefully
narrator might be able to see if there is a message there stopping nvda
from been installed.

Is it the first time you done it did you get the same results each time?
I think you did.

the worst you could do is use narrator to go to programs and features in
control panel and see if nvda was installed. If it was uninstall it.

The other place to to check is %appdata% then press the enter key. When
the next screen comes up locate the nvda folder and delete it then use the
alt key + f4 key to close that page.

You will most probably have to reboot windows then go back and install
nvda maybe the nvda.ini file got corrupted?

Re: New NVDA sounds

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Yes the nvda installed copy is where you would expect it, ie the program files (x86) folder and waves is in there. In a portable the same is true of course but it really depends on where you decided to save it of course, but it will be inside that folder. I think my best tip is this.
run a different copy while you do this.
Go to the folder, rename the waves folder to something else, say oldwaves, and then copy that waves folder with the new sounds into the folder.
Then reboot the copy you worked on and hey presto, at least until you get another update.

However, the plan I use is to always keep a copy of the new waves too, perhaps called newwaves and then just copy the sounds from inside that folder over to inside the new one.

However as has been said, I don't like the new sounds although if running a snap, I do have a certain affinity with the new error sound as it sounds a bit like an elastic band going ping.

I don't recall the instructions that were sent. If the instructions told people where to get the sounds, then my offer is unnecessary. I don't like the new sounds, but I have the wave folder that contains them. If you copy the wave folder in the proper NVDA folder, I'm not sure if the location differs in the portable and installed versions, the new files will replace the originals.

I can make the waves folder available if it isn't already.

Hi Sarah,

Yes, having an option to change the sound scheme yourself (and for people to be able to share sound schemes) is what we're looking to implement. When we changed the schemes, the idea was simply to "refresh" the sounds. We hadn't realised how passionate people were about the sounds (both for and against the new and old sounds), so we hadn't considered that until then. Since we didn't have time to make such changes before 2017.3, we felt it was best to keep the original sounds for now until a new sound theme feature is added.

If you did really like the sounds, someone did post the unofficial instructions in this thread for how to get them.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Using the mouse

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

This is where you need a sighted developer I feel.
If I was using the mouse as a blind person, the last thing I'd want is the link to be selected unless I wanted it to be.
There are still web page writers out there though who have the only text attached to links as click here or in some kases just the word here.
Or worse still an unlabelled graphic.
This is a funtion that could be on a toggle of some kind perhaps to allow you to hear the word link but only have its function around when on that indication, and not stop the sense of the sentence when reading using the mouse. I'd guess wikipedia would actual sound sensible then.

That would be really nice if someone would fix that. Also there are big issues when using the mouse in chrome. In firefox works better. But some webpages have areas which can only be accessed with the mouse, especially if a tool is programmed with java using inaccessible api. It would help if the mouse feature worked reliably in every browser.

Hi Jim,

You are right, there are issues with reading with the mouse. I did a bit of testing a little while ago on this issue: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/3590 but I don't think anyone has started work to fix it yet.

Is there a way to make it read the entire line of text regardless of any links in the line? My mouse is set to paragraph but it made no difference setting it to
line.

I'm having this exact same issue! I'm using Windows 10 Creator's Update on my laptop and NVDA keeps repeating the desktop icon. I don't think this issue exist in Windows 7 though.

[nvda-addons] NVDA Add-on to generate descriptions for web images

Hi All,

Dear All,

I have created an addon for NVDA which provides description for graphics/images present on the web pages. The add on uses Microsoft's Computer Vision cognitive API to get a description of the image provided to it. Please find below the steps to use the add on and the dropbox link to download it.

Steps to use add on:

Step 1: Generate a subscription key for using Microsoft Computer Vision cognitive API from the link below:

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/try/cognitive-services/

Please note that the key has to be created for the Computer Vision API. Currently Microsoft provides the option to create a trial key for 30 days.

Step 2: Download and Install the NVDA Addon named Assistech_IIT_Delhi from the link “” or from download button above.

For Addon installation instructions visit https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html#toc94

Step 3: From the add-on menu, select the options add API key and provide your subscription key for the cognition API.

Step 4: If you are behind a proxy, from the add on menu (the add-on is named as Assistech_IIT_Delhi) , select the options add proxy details and provide your proxy IP and port.

Step 3 and step 4 only need to be performed the first time or whenever either of your proxy details or subscription key changes.

Step 5: While navigating a webpage, whenever a graphic is encountered and is in focus, use keyboard shortcut NVDA+g. The image description and the confidence level returned b the API are provided as audio output. Use NVDA+gg to get the results (including the dominant colors present in the image) in a browseable message box. (Fetching results takes a few seconds.). If no result is obtained from API, appropriate speech message is returned.

I request you all to kindly test the add on and provide your feedback.

Re: Help With Eloquence

Chris

you have to download the voices as well as the addon

Without the voice installed it wont show

They should be a code factory menu  within the nvda menu options

If you choose eloquence or vocalizer it should prompt you to download a voice pack

You should have Eloquence and Vocalizer Expressive in there.

Hi good people:

I've just installed a copy of codefactory elequence expressive ad on for NVDA, and I am starting with the trial version.

The program has been properly installed, and I've gone through the settings.  But I cannot find the program in the synthesiser sub-menu of NVDA.

Please can anyone help me understand what could have gone wrong, or what I didn't do properly?

Re: How useable is spotify? with nvda

Gene

Hi guys

Has any one on the list use spotify through the browser or desk top app and if so how useable was it with nvda?

I just had a quick look i think it is the web version and seems useable. I would have to look around a bit more it is the free version of it.

If it is fairly useable has any one on the list done a tutorial for it? either written or audio? If there is one could you point me in the right direction please.
