Re: google chrome and combo box

Gene

From the wording of your message, you say recent versions aren't as friendly.  That strongly implies that this isn't a new problem.  If this were a general Chrome problem and if it were not new, we would have seen no end of comments and discussion about it by now; a lot of people on the list use Chrome.  So, let's see if we can figure out what might be the problem on your system.
Do other commands work such as move by heading?  Do other browsers work correctly?

Hi.  I have found the newer versions of chrome to be not as friendly as
the older versions.  For example, when using NVDA with chrome, the arrow
keys don't work.

I'm having this exact same issue! I'm using Windows 10 Creator's Update on my laptop and NVDA keeps repeating the desktop icon. I don't think this issue exist in Windows 7 though.

Using the mouse

Jim Pipczak

Hi all,

Being partially sighted I tend to use the physical mouse a lot to read bits and pieces until I find what I want.

When reading a line of text that has a link in it, NVDA only reads up to the link. You then need to move the pointer to the link to hear what it is.

Is there a way to make it read the entire line of text regardless of any links in the line? My mouse is set to paragraph but it made no difference setting it to

line.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Brian,

I thought the same thing and had rebooted. The only thing that fixed it was Gene's suggestion to delete the appdata folder. I've never seen this before and probably never will again.

Thanks,

Hmm, interesting. Not seen this but maybe a file was locked in that version, insofar as trying to replace the folder was concerned. I've often found that a complete restart of the machine can clear this sort of annoying problem.
Many people tend to only put laptops to sleep or hibernate which tends to , at least in the latter case preserve the state of things exactly as they were, and this can be a problem.

Hi,

Some excellent suggestions.
There was a previous installation of NVDA in appdata and deleting the
folder then allowed the installation of NVDA.
You’re a genius and I thank you very much.

Hi

usually in most cases it would be a uac screen that would come up. the
portable version would not be able to see it only the installer version.
when it comes up it or you would use the alt key + letter Y if i remember
right so it keep on installing it.

the other thing is your anti virus could be stopping it? but if it is the
one that comes with windows i do not think it would be.

You could always start up narrator on th ewindows 10 creators version use
the ctrl key + windows key + the enter key to start him up. Make sure when
you go to plug in the portable version then go to start it hopefully
narrator might be able to see if there is a message there stopping nvda
from been installed.

Is it the first time you done it did you get the same results each time?
I think you did.

the worst you could do is use narrator to go to programs and features in
control panel and see if nvda was installed. If it was uninstall it.

The other place to to check is %appdata% then press the enter key. When
the next screen comes up locate the nvda folder and delete it then use the
alt key + f4 key to close that page.

You will most probably have to reboot windows then go back and install
nvda maybe the nvda.ini file got corrupted?

There is nothing in the task manager or process areas as well.

Any great thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Hi

yes it is on the nvda tutorials for windows 10 page.

Look for the section to do with one core voices.

Just under the written tutorial has been added which one core voices can be used which is linked to the microsoft site. Even though it mentions narrator they work with nvda. But it does make it alot easier to see which ones you  can get if you can.

Just under that is the audio tutorial i got the aussie voice in the audio tutorial and shows the steps..

I will put up some more stuff and let the list know later on today or tomorrow.

Re: NVDA constantly repeating icons on the desktop

Gene

It makes more sense to just turn off speech in your screen-reader.  Both JAWS and NVDA have commands to turn off speech.  I would imagine other full feature screen-readers do as well.  If not, simply go to the start menu by pressing the Windows key once, then pressing escape.  You will be on the start button.  We don't know what is causing the problem.  Unselecting the item may or may not stop the behavior, but then you have the inconvenience of having to remember to select it again if you want to use it when you return to the computer.  It's better to just turn off speech or not be on the desktop altogether since unselecting and then reselecting something is so foreign to what is generally done.

When on my desktop, if I don't move, NVDA constantly repeats the name

icon that currently has focus.

Is this normal?

Can anyone tell me how to fix it?

Thanks,

Whenever a site doesn't work properly, if you have more than one browser, you should always try the other ones.  Experiment when it will do no harm and when you think it might solve a problem.

Internet Explorer is, as I've said many times on various lists, archaic.  I would think that a lot of web developers aren't testing their sites for compatibility with this archaic browser.  If people continue to insist on using it as their main browser, they should expect to find increasing problems over time.

Hi all,

A few months ago, I heard about Lyrebird, a future project which would
allow anyone to create a synthetic clone of their own voice. Last night
I found out that it's finally here, in an early beta form. If you go to
http://lyrebird.ai and create an account, you can then record a
minimum
of thirty sentences they specify, the more you record the better, and
then create your digital voice. Then you can have it speak any text you
choose. I've played with it, and while the quality isn't the best, it
does pretty accurately capture my voice, as well as most of the other
people I know of who have created voices. Check it out!

Jayson

That isn't as true as it used to be.  When you use the I'm not a robot Google system, the audio is reasonably understandable and if you can't understand one challenge, you can get another.  I don't know what the situation is aside from that, but the I'm not a robot challenge is increasingly popular and is therefore making audio challenges considerably more likely to be understandable or reasonably so.

Hank, regarding the present captcha, how many browsers did you check with?  there may be a problem where you don't see an edit field with one browser but you do with another.  Also, if you only looked for the edit field in browse mode, go into forms mode and tab around the captcha interface.  You may find an edit field that way that doesn't show in browse mode.
