Has NVDA 2017.2 RC1 been made available?

I ask because this is usually announced here but I haven't seen it and Quentin recently posted something with a mighty detailed list of changes for 2017.2 that makes me think that RC1 may be out there for the 2017.2 release.

Dennis,

Did you report bugs on here or in GitHub?  If on GitHub, when they are fixed, there is usually a note saying something like:

"person added a commit that referenced this issue" (where "person" is whoever added the commit)  A commit is a request to build a new copy of NVDA (a new master or next snapshot) which incorporates new code - any issues referenced in the commit are usually resolved (or the person committing the changes believes they have fixed it - anyone testing that build who tries to reproduce whatever the original issue was can hopefully confirm whether it now works or not).

Here you go.  Are you just curious, or is there something specific you are hoping for?

What's New in NVDA

2017.2

Highlights of this release include full support for audio ducking in the Windows 10 Creators Update; fixes for several selection issues in browse mode, including problems with select all; significant improvements in Microsoft Edge support; and improvements on the web such as indication of elements marked as current (using aria-current).

New Features

  • Cell border information can now be reported in Microsoft Excel by using NVDA+f. (#3044)
  • In web browsers, NVDA now indicates when an element has been marked as current (specifically, using the aria-current attribute). (#6358)
  • Automatic language switching is now supported in Microsoft Edge. (#6852)
  • Added support for Windows Calculator on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB (Long-Term Servicing Branch) and Server. (#6914)
  • Performing the read current line command three times quickly spells the line with character descriptions. (#6893)
  • New language: Burmese.
  • Unicode up and down arrows and fraction symbols are now spoken appropriately. (#3805)

Changes

  • When navigating with simple review in applications using UI Automation, more extraneous objects are now ignored, making navigation easier. (#6948, #6950)

Bug Fixes

  • Web page menu items can now be activated while in browse mode. (#6735)
  • Pressing escape while the configuration profile "Confirm Deletion" dialog is active now dismisses the dialog. (#6851)
  • Fixed some crashes in Mozilla Firefox and other Gecko applications where the multi-process feature is enabled. (#6885)
  • Reporting of background color in screen review is now more accurate when text was drawn with a transparent background. (#6467)
  • Improved support for control descriptions provided on web pages in Internet Explorer 11 (specifically, support for aria-describedby within iframes and when multiple IDs are provided). (#5784)
  • In the Windows 10 Creators Update, NVDA's audio ducking again works as in previous Windows releases; i.e. Duck with speech and sounds, always duck and no ducking are all available. (#6933)
  • NVDA will no longer fail to navigate to or report certain (UIA) controls where a keyboard shortcut is not defined. (#6779)
  • Two empty spaces are no longer added in keyboard shortcut information for certain (UIA) controls. (#6790)
  • Certain combinations of keys on HIMS displays (e.g. space+dot4) no longer fail intermittently. (#3157)
  • Fixed an issue when opening a serial port on systems using certain languages other than English which caused connecting to braille displays to fail in some cases. (#6845)
  • Reduced the chance of the configuration file being corrupted when Windows shuts down. Configuration files are now written to a temporary file before replacing the actual configuration file. (#3165)
  • When performing the read current line command twice quickly to spell the line, the appropriate language is now used for the spelled characters. (#6726)
  • Navigating by line in Microsoft Edge is now up to three times faster in the Windows 10 Creators Update. (#6994)
  • NVDA no longer announces "Web Runtime grouping" when focusing Microsoft Edge documents in the Windows 10 Creators Update. (#6948)
  • All existing versions of SecureCRT are now supported. (#6302)
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader no longer crashes in certain PDF documents (specifically, those containing empty ActualText attributes). (#7021, #7034)
  • In browse mode in Microsoft Edge, interactive tables (ARIA grids) are no longer skipped when navigating to tables with t and shift+t. (#6977)
  • In browse mode, pressing shift+home after selecting forward now unselects to the beginning of the line as expected. (#5746)
  • In browse mode, select all (control+a) no longer fails to select all text if the caret is not at the start of the text. (#6909)
  • Fixed some other rare selection problems in browse mode. (#7131)

Changes for Developers

  • Commandline arguments are now processed with Python's argparse module, rather than optparse. This allows certain options such as -r and -q to be handled exclusively. (#6865)
  • core.callLater now queues the callback to NVDA's main queue after the given delay, rather than waking the core and executing it directly. This stops possible freezes due to the core accidentally going to sleep after processing a callback, in the midle of a modal call such as the desplaying of a message box. (#6797)
  • The InputGesture.identifiers property has been changed so that it is no longer normalized. (#6945)
    • Subclasses no longer need to normalize identifiers before returning them from this property.
    • If you want normalized identifiers, there is now an InputGesture.normalizedIdentifiers property which normalizes the identifiers returned by the identifiers property .
  • The InputGesture.logIdentifier property is now deprecated. Callers should use InputGesture.identifiers[0] instead. (#6945)
  • Removed some deprecated code:
    • `speech.REASON_*` constants: `controlTypes.REASON_*` should be used instead. (#6846)
    • `i18nName` for synth settings: `displayName` and `displayNameWithAccelerator` should be used instead. (#6846, #5185)
    • `config.validateConfig`. (#6846, #667)
    • `config.save`: `config.conf.save` should be used instead. (#6846, #667)
  • The list of completions in the autocomplete context menu of the PythonConsole no longer shows any objec path leading up to the final symbol being completed. (#7023)
  • There is now a unit testing framework for NVDA. (#7026)
    • Unit tests and infrastructure are located in the tests/unit directory. See the docstring in the tests\unit\init.py file for details.
    • You can run tests using "scons tests". See the "Running Tests" section of readme.md for details.
    • If you are submitting a pull request for NVDA, you should first run the tests and ensure they pass.

Well you can see now if you download a Master build and reading the what's new :)

My intention though, was to publish more info in next week's In-Process.  But since you asked, here's the highlights spiel:

We've been asked a bit lately about Windows 10 S and before that about Windows mobile.  The short answer is that NVDA doesn't work on those platforms, but for a bit more depth as to why (and links to several other resources), Jamie has written an interesting piece on the issues involved:

This is true. The roll outs started about 2 and a half weeks ago and are still going on, though I have yet to receive mine yet grins.

Then activate it again

I would think that every time you start NVDA after it isn't running, that the add on has to authorize itself.

Unfortunately, the Code Factory Vocalizer and Eloquence pack

This is happening both with my portable and installed versions
of NVDA.

I often have to manually re-activate the add-on everytime I
open NVDA.

Does anyone have a possible fix for this?

Thank you for the help.

Re: WinAmp

Perhaps the context mmenu will provide access, then.  We'll see what is reported.  If not, uninstalling and reinstalling and making sure the classic skin is checked during installation might solve the problem as well.  another possibility is, that if the skin being used lets you go into properties and cause Winamp to be displayed in the system tray, and then right click it, that should open the menus as well.  It would b faster and easier than uninstalling and reinstalling.  I thought that only the original skin was installed by default but if I'm wrong, various possible ways to change the skin might be tried.

After changing the skin i. e. to the Classic Skin, the usual key commands

May be there are ways to get the key commands working in Modern Skins, too,
but it is hard to explain.

Hi Tony and Group,

While I concede that you are probably right about Winamp going to that great big cyber haven in the sky, you would think they would pull down the information on the Winamp home page:

"extensive and exciting new changes are coming to Winamp in the near future..."

and

"As you may have heard from other sources Winamp and Shoutcast were recently purchased by Radionomy from AOL...."

Maybe they don't want final disposition for some unknown reason or maybe there is some sort of court fight that has frozen things in place???

AVAST followup to previous post

Tony Ballou

Hi,

Unfortunately I do not have the instructions of starting NVDA in safe mode. I did some checking though and found that the instructions I once had date back to 2011 and were originally posted in the blind cool tech forum. They also rquired that you downlad a set of registry keys from the sendspace.com website.  Well folks, it's been  6 years since then, and sendspace has long since changed their rules so you can pretty much guess wheere those files are. If your answer was data heaven, then, have a cigar, because you'd be correct. Perhaps, there is a way to perform this procedure, but for now,I will leave this for other brothers and sisters in arms to weigh in.  Tony

Hi,

My thoughts exactly.  Once the computer is in an open state like this, it is shall we say, vulnerable for the worms to eat into its brains. This is really  not a bad thing that avast is doing here.  It's all about protecting you in the long run. And um-installing your protection program should be one of the last things you have to do, unless things are in dire straights.  I believe that Norton and McAfee back in the day used similar methods, that required you to remove them either running them in safe mode, or registry editing.

Don't get things twisted, I do not like having to do either of these procedures myself, and have done so occasionally, I do highly recommend that you have sighted assistance, and be sure that it is someone who knows what they are doing. You don't want to be making mistakes in either mode. As for running NVDA in safe mode, I believe that there were instructions on how to do it posted on a list years ago and I may still have them around.  I'll check in and post them if I do. Keep in mind, these instructions go back a ways and there may be better ways to perform this procedure now so if there are better ways, please if you haven't done so already, follow up. Much thanks inadvnace.

It's very likely a security feature.  If the program could be removed as you suggest, malware could use the same method to remove AVAST.  The need to use Safe Mode or solve a captcha in such a tool is actually a sign of quality and better protection for the antivirus program against being attacked by malware it doesn't recognize and thus doesn't stop.

I have a feeling that the complete uninstall requires safe mode with minimal
drivers loaded. Its one reason I don't like avast myself. it needs an
uninstall utility to remove it completely and that itself needs to run in
safe mode. Quite why it cannot do most of it in normal mode then remove the
rest on the next boot up like many security programsdo eludes me.
