Re: advanced nvda help?

Quentin Christensen

Hi Hank,

I hope Rui was able to help you.  Another idea for learning Object Navigation are our "Basic training for NVDA" module, which, despite the name, does cover the review cursor and object navigation, and has a number of activities to help you get it down pat.

You could try our telephone support.  Both available from: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/

Kind regards

Quentin.

I think the only way I am going to get the object navigation down is if some one were to be on skype with me in real time.

I don't think I have ever been so frustrated with myself.

thanks

Edge and weird language changes

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I have been asked to ask this.
It seems that Edge sometimes interpret English pages as having another language in all or part of the page. As yet I have not been sent examples. Firefox on the same pages does not. this to me suggests that the issue is not nvda related, but some quirk of Edge on some web sites, probably not tested on that browser.
Just putting a feeler out before I reply really.
I don't use Edge, it seems clunky by comparison to Firefox.

Re: Publishing an eBook with NVDA

Quentin Christensen

I haven't used Smashwords, although I have published on other platforms.  One tool I have used is Calibre which converts documents to and from a number of formats, including ePub (and mobi).

Once you have an ePub, it's worth running through: http://validator.idpf.org/ which will test whether there are any major ePub validation errors which will often throw up red flags on various publishing sites (Apple iBooks will reject books which don't pass that validator for instance - or at least, if they reject you, they recommend fixing any errors that site shows).

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi David,

I have published a book on smashwords some years ago.  The process is accessible but you need your book formatted correctly which is where you  may want to get sighted assistance to verify the formatting like uniform fonts being used etc. Yes, it may be possible to format correctly with NVDA but the process is tedious not because of NVDA but the way a screen reader works and presents information via speech. If we could get a tool like the Jaws text analyser,  verifying formatting etc., would become easier. Yes, there is already a ticket about this.

Re: Strange issues with Edge and latest NVDA

Quentin Christensen

Edge works better in Insider builds of Windows currently with NVDA, and this should roll out to regular users once the "Creators Update" comes out from Microsoft, hopefully from around April.  Based on how they rolled out the last big update, you may or may not get the update straight away, and it could take a couple of months.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Citation management and NVDA

Quentin Christensen

Hi James,

I don't have an answer for you as to a third party program, but I did look at Microsoft Word's handling of citations when I was writing the "Microsoft Word for NVDA" training module and can confirm that while not all the keystrokes are completely logical, from memory the features around using citations do all work (as with most things, there are keystrokes, or you can access them via the references ribbon in Word).  The other question will be around whether Microsoft Word does things exactly as specified in your style guide, but I can't answer that one I'm afraid! *smile*.

Is this for generating the sitations, and bibliographies, or is it more for actually looking references up? I ask as, doesn't MS Word give you an option to generate sitations? I'm sorry if I'm totally off kilter here for what this is used for, if you're not using the word sitation in this context that I speak of. Honestly, I'm very very ignorant when it comes to this, but creating sitations, and siting my sources on things has always been something I've taken extremely seriously, so I figured there isn't a dumb question, so thought I'd ask.

Re: does nvda have number processing?

Quentin Christensen

If you mean to read "12345" as "one two three four five" or "Twelve thousand, three hundred and forty-five", then not so much at this stage, the synthesizer mostly handles that currently.  You could add an entry to the dictionary, probably using Regex would be easiest, to try and adjust how numbers are read, or else create an add-on.  The tricky thing is with any adjustment to how something is read, that in different contexts, the same text can mean different things, for instance. "Ring the doctor on 5556835" would be more easily understood if the numbers are read out individually, whereas "I got a new high score in my game: 5556835!" sounds better as five million, five hundred and fifty-six thousand, eight hundred and thirty-five, but it's very hard to pick the right context.

Re: using libreoffice base with NVDA

Quentin Christensen

Hi Martin,

Off the top of my head I have to say I'm not 100% sure - though if you're having problems, it's likely that there is an issue.  What I would recommend, if you can articulate the issue and the steps to reproduce it, is if you can file an issue on our issue tracker which is here: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues

That will at least record it, and also bring it up with the developers.  Personally, I'm keen on improving our LibreOffice support, and certainly one way of doing that is to highlight what the issues are and show that people are using it and it is wanted.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Questions about Edge

Quentin Christensen

Hi Chris,

Just to jump in late, but one thing Edge seems to handle fairly well, is PDF files, sometimes better than other options.

I must admit, I keep going back and forth between browsers so I always have trouble answering specifics around "what does this one do well, what does that one do".  One of the biggest issues is that it keeps changing as Microsoft make adjustments.  I think currently, it works overall, ok on Insider builds of Windows, but not so well on the last stable build.  For regular Windows 10 users, you should see improvements when the "Creators build" of Windows, the next big update, rolls out, hopefully from around April or so.

Regards

Quentin.

Don't know if this was answered yet or not, but usually, when you see a link that says void(0), it's a javascript link where the javascript behind the link hasn't executed yet, so that it doesn't point anywhere, thus the whole void 0 thing.

To be honest, there are still a lot of nasty people out there, and I'd not run without at least a minimal firewall to stop drive by stuff, and yet, strangely, I did experimentally leave an old xp machine on for some days with no protection and it never seemed to get anything.
Maybe there are certain parameters that make some peoples machines more targettable?

Re: antivirus

There are articles discussing that many free versions of antimalware programs do things like selling information such as sites someone looks at to marketers.  Many companies no longer want to provide free malware programs without the company earning money from them.  Which specific ones do these sort of things, I don't know.

I don't know what you have seen about MSSE.  If you are careful in researching and selecting a free antimalware program, you can avoid this sort of thing.  I haven't seen anything indicating that paid versions of programs collect this sort of information.
