Have a try at Instantbird.  I like that you can have messages from different senders as tabs or as separate windows.  I used to use it a while ago, works with msn protocol as well as others.

I almost never use Internet Explorer and I haven't upgraded beyond 8.  In 8, when you would start a download, the download window opens.  If you are in the window and if NVDA is set to read progress bars, you will here the percent spoken.  In IE11, I don't know what happens, but I'm confident that if you are in the right place, you will hear the percentage as well.  I consider this to be of very little importance because, for one thing, I use my computer during downloads most of the time and I'm not in the window.  It's really no trouble to check the download window of whatever browser I'm using off and on to see when a download completes.  And also, Internet Explorer can be made to play a sound when a download completes.

Hi, Brian,

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you here. If you want to hear the percentage when something is downloading, just press insert U. The choices you'll get are beep, speak percentages or no speech. You don't really need something special like an add-on or narrator to announce percentages when downloading a file.

I told him that nvda does not do theese things and I don't that it ever will.  Theese are both microsoft issues with windows so this should be able to be done.  This would make naratordo what other screen readers can't do.

Re: Has anyone seen this mysterious windows problem?

John Hedges

I have seen some busy issues on oler preview vuilds, which made apps not run. I have also seen some times when NVDA stops speaking for a while recently on new preview buils 15170. This is most often associated with hangs in Edge and Mail then stops working until a NBDA restart or system restart. There was a time when the speech stopped working due to some corruption in the SAPI subsystem. I switched to eSpeak for a short time, and back to Microsoft.

Re: NVDA and LibreOfice annoyances - Two, three or many places?

Nasrin,

As a matter of policy I never use anything but the latest versions of open source or free software such as LibreOffice, so I really can't advise regarding what earlier versions are like.   I personally would not use an earlier version unless the latest has somehow become broken from an accessibility standpoint, and that's not particularly likely.

I am still trying to wrap my head around what, other than corruption in the OS of some kind, could make any standard Windows WinKey plus style command fail to work. I have never seen the WinKey remapped.

This is not caused by overwrite.  In the example, nothing is deleted.  Characters are out of place.

Hi Gary,

I am wondering if perhaps the insert key is being set to overwrite instead of inserting characters.  I used to see this in Word myself, and a press of the insert key disabled this from happening.  Apparently in Word, you can get into overwrite mode where when you type if is actually overwriting text   instead of inserting it.

As for chat programs, I wonder how Miranda would work with NVDA?  I haven’t tried it myself.  Maybe try Instantbird as well?

Hello,

My workplace uses Jabber extensively to chat internally.  I have been using Thunderbird's built-in chat, but find that it occasionally scrambles my outgoing messages, which is very strange, annoying, and has to be with T-Bird specifically because I don't have this issue with any other software.  For example, the line:

"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"

Might be changed to:

"ver the lazy dogThe quick brown fox jumps o"

Obviously, this happens while I'm typing, but I have no way to know this.  So, I guess this is a two part question:

2. More importantly: does anyone know of a chat program, besides Thunderbird and Trillian, that works well with NVDA?  I've tried mIRC and Pidgin, but both have issues with NVDA.
