Re: Outlook 2016 - Cannot Open Certain Messages When NVDA is Active
Quentin Christensen
Hi Christo, Could you get me a copy of your NVDA log to have a look at please, ideally at debug level? Please send it attached to an email to info@.... Include a description of what you have done and what isn't working as it should (so I know what it's about in case I don't get to investigate today). First of all, your NVDA key is either INSERT or CAPS LOCK, depending on how you have NVDA setup. So, to set your log level: 1) Press NVDA+control+g to open the general settings 2) Press TAB until the focus is on 'Log level' 3) Press DOWN ARROW to get to 'Debug' 4) Press ENTER to close settings 5) Press NVDA+control+c to save settings. To restart NVDA with add-ons disabled: 1) Press NVDA+Q 2) Down arrow to 'Restart with add-ons disabled' 3) Press ENTER Next, recreate the issue - do whatever causes problems. To get NVDA's log after that, there are several ways: If NVDA is still running and usable: 1) Press NVDA+F1 to open the log viewer 2) Press CONTROL+A to select all. 3) Press CONTROL+C to copy. 4) Open your email and start a message to info@..., type a little about what you have done and what has happened in the body of the message, then leave a space and: 5) Press CONTROL+V to paste the copied log. Instead of using the log viewer, or if NVDA has stopped and you needed to restart it or the computer: 1) Press WINDOWS+R to open Windows' Run dialog 2) Type %temp% and press ENTER (that's the percent sign, the letter t e m p and another percent sign). Windows Explorer should open to the temporary folder. 3) Press TAB to move to the file list 4) Press N and move down to find up to three files: nvda.log (the log file for the current or most recent NVDA session), nvda-old.og (the log from the previous session) and nvda-crash.dmp (a crash dump with more information created if NVDA itself crashes). 5) Depending on what email program you use, the steps will be different, but attach as many of those three files to an email to info@... as will be useful, and again in the body of the message describe a bit about what has happened. If possible, could you please also forward a message which causes problems to me so that I can endeavour to replicate myself? Ideally, instead of forwarding as you normally would, could you please forward as attachment? In Outlook you can move to the message in the list, then press ALT+H, 0, 0, then F. Sometimes when forwarding a message normally, the email client can alter the structure enough so that even though it looks the same, it might not cause exactly the same effects, (such as crashing NVDA). Kind regards Quentin.

Yes, I have GC installed. Just haven't learned how to use it yet, that's abundantly clear to me now. LOL.

Not sure if you are aware of a add on called golden cursor it will let you use arrow keys to navigate and do other stuff it can be found at https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/goldenCursor.en.html it will have to be installed into NVDA for that extra functionality. Gene nz .

Questions About Mouse Cursor Movement and Position
Steve Matzura
The audible position when the mouse cursor is routed is one of my favorite features of NVDA, but is it also possible to move the mouse cursor and pres a key that will give that same information at the mouse cursor's new position?
Also, what's the keystroke for getting the position of the PC Cursor? It seems that NVDA+DELETE only gives the mouse pointer position. And lastly, is it possible to get these position announcements in pixels instead of percentages of linear measurements? Thank in advance. NVDA's come such a long way, and I'm happy and proud to be a supporter thereof, both conceptually and financially.

Sorry to clutter the list but I wanted to thank David and Sarah
for helping me so much. I did not have the website that sarah
mentioned written down before and when I went in that way it
worked. I have memory problems now and thus the reason my
confidence level is even lower. Thank you both for helping me have
the courage to try downloading it this way.
Thank you to those who designed the website that the link said
exactly what told me that I was at the correct spot to download
the latest update.

Re: Tutorials for sighted users.

Hi Robert
With out putting any thing together the following page will help the web developer from web aim.
The link to this page is https://webaim.org/articles/nvda/
I can also put together more info on a page like turning on the focus high lighter etc and also link to this page. Even though it is not updated it is still relevant for testing a website with NVDA.
I think there is also a link on mmy website to this same page.
I will see what I come up with later on today..

In my particular case, it is mainly web developers that want to do manual testing with NVDA. I have some casual friends that want to learn, out of curiosity, but mostly, it's web developers.

Re: Tutorials for sighted users.

Hi Robert
Not that I am aware of apart from the stuff I have written.
Would it be more web based? or on the desk top?
I can put some thing together for the sighted then later on post it on the website of mine for every one.
I have done some thing similar for a dyslexic people but in that case pointed towards the mouse and reading what is under it which can be toggled with a shortcut now.
There are probably already parts up there that I can use for it.
Is it more based at what a sighted person sees on screen like a trainer or say testing a website etc?

David Goldfield
Hi. Betsy, The NV Access Web site doesn't have a direct download link. When you select the Download link the file usually doesn't begin downloading. Instead, there is a form which gives you the option of donating to the NV Access project. There are radio buttons on the page where you can choose an amount to donate but there is a choice to skip the donation, which you are absolutely free to do. Once you complete this form the download process should start. Depending on which Web browser you are using and how it has been set up the download might begin automatically or you might receive some additional prompts. I think that the more you try it the easier it will become and the more your confidence level will increase. The bottom line is that we really can't provide a link that will immediately initiate the download process.

Thank you. I am waiting to hear back from David hopefully with a link to the full install. As I have told you and now told him I do not feel comfortable with websites where I have to download something unless there is a direct link. I know it is a fear I need to get over but I guess it is because of a lack of training on computers.

Hi.
I recall that there is an antivirus package that blocks use of NVDA with the web, or at least makes it very difficult to use. I don't remember the name though, and was wondering if he had it installed.

A workaround is already available: I know I'm advertising this a lot, but install Windows 10 App Essentials, then open NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings/Object Presentation and turn off "report notifications". If you do turn this off, you won't be able to hear things such as volume changes from File Explorer, notifications from many apps, and so on (technical: this is UIA notification event). Cheers, Joseph
