I used to use WordWeb, and had no problems with it and NVDA.

This was several years ago, though, so I'm not sure how accessible it is (or even if it's still available) these days.

Hello,

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I have just tried to update NVDA and been told that the driver for my vocaliser voices is out of date and the add on cannot be installed.
does this mean that I will have to pay again for new voices?
If this is the case, I believe that the voices can be obtained for use with any screen reader, is that correct.

Thanks for any clarification.
Best Regards, Jim.

I've actually had that fail as I don't use that shortcut, and I don't have a shortcut on my desktop. I just hit windows r, type nvda hit enter and it should start up, but I have also had that barf.

I have got this error consistently for some months now. It works correctly if I download the update straight after restarting, otherwise not. It's irritating but I didn't report it as I couldn't find a pattern for how to reproduce.

Kill NVDA

  • Author: Tyler Spivey
  • NVDA compatibility: 2019.2 to 2019.3
  • Download stable version

This add-on is designed to temporarily kill NVDA, so that you can recover if it freezes.

Usage

  1. Install this add-on.
  2. Copy it to the logon screen with the button in General Settings.
  3. When NVDA dies, press control alt delete, then activate the NVDA menu, Tools, Kill NVDA.

After that, press escape. NVDA restarts, but you should be able to use your computer again.

Re: Announcements in Word

Hi,

You cannot turn those off as they come from Word itself (technical: yet another UIA notification event).

Cheers,

Hi all,

something I've only just noticed while using Word 365 with NVDA 2019.3 is that NVDA now announces when text has been cut, copied  or pasted, and when an action has been undone.

Simple question, is there any way to turn those announcements off? I like being told when bold has been turned on or off, for example, and likewise with tracked changes, but I don't need to be told when I've copied or pasted text.

I couldn't spot anything in the user guide,  nor by looking at all the NVDA settings options, nor  by searching the posts in this list.

Thanks for any info.

Giles

Re: Offline dictionary

Hi to you all,

I agree with what Gene has said. I use it in the same way he describes. Besides, when I type a word whose definition I wish, I press enter and tab twice to the read only definition field. When I studied English, I used Wordweb as much as possible. I use it still. There are as many definitions contained in it as you wish. It's good to use the screen review, because when you tab to the definition read only field to read definitions, it sometimes happens that you miss some examples and types of words such as: verbs, nouns, pronouns, derived forms, etc, if you choose not to use the screen review.

If you wish to get the most out of your Wordweb definitions, you may have to obtain an internet connection. When you type a word and you find no matches, then you go to the view menu in the Wordweb interface, and then you need to find a submenu called In web browser. In that case, wordweb consults some other definition sources on the internet.

Enjoy your Wordweb, anyway. It offers much.

Cheers,

Dejan

It has an insulting and intrusive license agreement.  The developer is obsessed with airline travel as a way of determining who doesn’t have enough money to justify using the demo as a free version and that is how you convert the demo to the free version.  When the demo time runs out, or when you want, you certify that you haven’t flown more than something like two times in the last year.  And thus, the planet will be saved.

Re: Good News About New Edge

Unless something has changed radically, and I'm not saying it hasn't, the PDF functionality in most browsers does not support editing of/in the PDF itself.

Hi Group,

Well after my debacal of Saturday (boy do I still feel so bum about that one!)  I do have some good news.  There had been discussion about how the new Edge browser had broken the reading of PDF in the official release.  Well due to all the confusion of several months ago, I had downloaded and installed the DEV version.  Now that I am running that as the sole version of the new Edge, I can report that indeed (as I believe Brian Vogal had already reported) the PDF issue is fixed in DEV version 83.X.

I wanted to read my church directory which is a PDF document and it handled the document better than the Adobe Reader itself.  I was able to do a search using the NVDA Insert + Control + F keystroke and it moved directly from page 1 to page 10 where the information I wanted was located.  I was able to copy this information and paste it into an e-mail message in Thunderbird with no problem.  This is really the best rendering of  a complex PDF file with tables and links and such that I have ever seen before.
