Re: Firefox memory loss syndrome

Antony Stone

What's the exact message Firefox shows you when it says it can't find a page?

There's often some useful technical detail in those messages to suggest
whether it's a problem with the browser, the DNS lookup, the network
connection, or the remote server.

Somewhat ironically, I find there are increasing problems with "cannot load
page" these days, since Content Delivery Networks (lots of computers all doing
the same job, to cater for the enormous number of requests they're supposed to
be getting) have become more commonplace.

Also, when you say "sighted people say they do not see this at all", do you
mean:

- they don't see this problem on their computer, nothing to do with yours

- they don't see the error message on your computer, when you can

- they don't see a problem (they se the page) on your computer, when you see
the error message

Different behaviour between two computers both trying to do the same thing
(even at the same time) often doesn't help to identify what the problem is
with one of them.

Regards,

Antony.

Also it needs to be tested with the standard Espeak voices first in case its a quirk in the player used.
I have noticed this kind of behaviour in dialogues like save as when you directly change the path in the filename field, but nowhere else.

I think if its a general issue many are getting on the latest version of nvda, you do need to raise it as and issue on github or at least take it to the development list as it could well be hardware dependent and not seen by the authors on their machines.

This isn't a video card problem. Have you tried using another screen-reader? As of now, we don't know if this is an NVdA problem or something else, such as Excel or a combination of NVDA and Excel.

When you have such problems, it's a good idea to have another screen-reader such as a JAWS demo to compare results. If you don't, you have no way of determining, unless others already have, if you are dealing with a problem specific to NVDA or not.

Yes. I’ve basically done the same steps you have. I’m running Office 2010 on an HP Pavillion with Windows 10 Anniversary edition and the latest NVDA version. Someone suggested I check my computer’s Power settings (Control Panel/System & Security/Power settings) and change the setting to “High Performance. Did that. Also checked to make sure I didn’t need to be defragged. After changing the Power setting, some NVDA responses seemed to be quicker but when I started working in Excel, I was getting mixed results. Sometimes NVDA would be responsive but more frequently, NVDA stops talking. Frequently when I hit Alt to go into the the Ribbon, I will get up to a 10 second lag before NVDA says anything. When I arrow between Ribbon tabs, there can be up to a 10 second delay before NVDA announces the Ribbon tab I have moved to. I heard an assistive tech person say that screen readers run off of the computer’s video card. So I’m wondering, do I need a computer with a higher end video card? Do I need to bite the bullet and get a newer version of MS Office e.g. Office 2016? Are others having this experience with Office 2010? Suggestions appreciated.

Hi Group

Ever since I upgraded to NVDA 2016.4 I have been encountering a rather frustrating problem.

When I switch on my laptop and go into MS Word (I use Office 2010) I experience a problem where NVDA lags terribly as I type. For instance, I tyoe a word and by the time I get to the last letter, NVDA is still spelling the first few letters. What makes things worse, is that when I set it that it reads typed words, NVDA's lag increases, so I have already typed three words and NVDA is still stuck on the first word.

I also experience a problem where I am busy with certain basic tasks, like reading documents with a lot of graphics, or copying files, when NVDA just switches off. Then I have to restart NVDA to continue with whatever I am doing.

I have reverted to the default configuration, reconfigured NVDA and even uninstalled NVDA all to no effect.

I have an Asus laptop, running the newest Windows 10, Office 2010 and NVDA 2016.4. I use Speech Player in E-Speak as my default synthesiser.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Could you please give me advice on how to fix this problem?

Hi

I shall try the earlier version. My master copy used to work properly before the upgrade to 2016.4 and after that the master copy gave problems, so I uninstalled it, which improved things for a little while, until my upgrade from 2016.3 to 2016.4.

This is definitely an NVDA problem, because I only started experiencing this problem from January this year.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I just don't like Live mail, its too messy and keeps on losing its mail.

While your first assertion is unquestionably correct for you, your second one is just your opinion and the third one has never - I repeat - never - happened in my experience.  I've had a lot of clients who use WLM and have it running alongside Outlook 2010, Thunderbird, and Opera Mail, the last of which is an accessibility nightmare not to mention barely customizable, much like the Windows 10 mail app.

Should Windows 10 App Essentials add-on drop support for twitter app?

Hi Windows 10 users,

Due to repeated accessibility issues with Twitter app, I’m considering dropping support for Twitter app in Windows 10 App Essentials in March 2017. Current issues include button labeling problems, inability to hear tweet info as you read the timeline and so on, something Twitter can fix and was repeated raised on various channels.

Please write to me offlist if you have comments. Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Nasrin,

I have LibreOffice although I'm working more in Microsoft Office at the moment.  I am certainly happy to try and test anything you need?  Or I'm sure there are others on the list who can try and help as well.

If you are having trouble with a particular file you can send me, feel free.

Kind regards

Quentin.
