Re: NVDA not focusing on comments when navigating using the anotations list

Quentin Christensen

That's correct.

Using A / shift+A, or NVDA+F7 to navigate to comments, moves you to that part in the document itself and you can use NVDA+control+c to read the comment itself.  To reply to the comment you would need to move to the comment itself like you indicate.

If you do regularly reply to comments, you could create a macro to do it with one keystroke.

Hi Pranav,

When using the elements list dialog, once you have located the comment you would like to move to, you can press ENTER to move to it which works exactly the same as pressing TAB to the "move to" button and then ENTER - just a little quicker.

Once you do either of those, what should actually happen (and does for me, please let me know if this isn't what happens for you), is that the focus moves to the place in the document itself where the comment is - not the comment itself but the place where the comment is in the text.  At that point, you can press NVDA+alt+c to read the comment text.

If you wish to edit the comment itself (presumably if it's your own comment you want to change), you can then use alt+r, n as you indicate to move to the "next" comment from the review ribbon.

If the comment was from someone else and you want to "reply", then you can open the comment in this way, then press the applications key to open the context menu and choose "Reply to comment" (press M).

Kind regards

Quentin.

This happens in Word 2016 using NVDA 2016.4.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a document containing comments.
2. Go to brows mode and activate the list of links feature by hitting NVDA key +
f7.
3. Select the option to show annotations
4. Arrow to a comment of choice..
5. Tab to the "move" button and hit enter or spacebar to confirm the action.

You will be told you are on a comment. Hit the context menu key and look for
comment related options. You will not find them.

The workaround is to use the previous and next comment controls in the review
pane of the word ribbon.

This isn't a video card problem.  Have you tried using another screen-reader?  As of now, we don't know if this is an NVdA problem or something else, such as Excel or a combination of NVDA and Excel.

When you have such problems, it's a good idea to have another screen-reader such as a JAWS demo to compare results.  If you don't, you have no way of determining, unless others already have, if you are dealing with a problem specific to NVDA or not.

Yes. I’ve basically done the same steps you have. I’m running Office 2010 on an HP Pavillion with Windows 10 Anniversary edition and the latest NVDA version. Someone suggested I check my computer’s Power settings (Control Panel/System & Security/Power settings) and change the setting to “High Performance. Did that. Also checked to make sure I didn’t need to be defragged. After changing the Power setting, some NVDA responses seemed to be quicker but when I started working in Excel, I was getting mixed results. Sometimes NVDA would be responsive but more frequently, NVDA stops talking. Frequently when I hit Alt to go into the the Ribbon, I will get up to a 10 second lag before NVDA says anything. When I arrow between Ribbon tabs, there can be up to a 10 second delay before NVDA announces the Ribbon tab I have moved to. I heard an assistive tech person say that screen readers run off of the computer’s video card. So I’m wondering, do I need a computer with a higher end video card? Do I need to bite the bullet and get a newer version of MS Office e.g. Office 2016? Are others having this experience with Office 2010? Suggestions appreciated.

Hi Group

Ever since I upgraded to NVDA 2016.4 I have been encountering a rather frustrating problem.

When I switch on my laptop and go into MS Word (I use Office 2010) I experience a problem where NVDA lags terribly as I type.  For instance, I tyoe a word and by the time I get to the last letter, NVDA is still spelling the first few letters.  What makes things worse, is that when I set it that it reads typed words, NVDA's lag increases, so I have already typed three words and NVDA is still stuck on the first word.

I also experience a problem where I am busy with certain basic tasks, like reading documents with a lot of graphics, or copying files, when NVDA just switches off.  Then I have to restart NVDA to continue with whatever I am doing.

I have reverted to the default configuration, reconfigured NVDA and even uninstalled NVDA all to no effect.

I have an Asus laptop, running the newest Windows 10, Office 2010 and NVDA 2016.4. I use Speech Player in E-Speak as my default synthesiser.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?  Could you please give me advice on how to fix this problem?

Kind regards

Hi,

Did you use fixed or dynamic column widths?

It is possible that your information is too big for the cells in the table. The column widths need to be adjusted.

Shouldn't it be ?dl=1? That syntax forces Drop Box to download a file
instead of trying to run it, open it, or perhaps not present a download
link on the page. I now add ?dl=1 to any link for Drop Box if it isn't
already there. If there is a ?dl=0, I change the 0 to a 1.

Those using speech with little or no punctuation announced should look at the syntax character by character so as not to take a chance of missing any of it.

Shouldn't it be ?dl=1?  That syntax forces Drop Box to download a file instead of trying to run it, open it, or perhaps not present a download link on the page.  I now add ?dl=1 to any link for Drop Box if it isn't already there.  If there is a ?dl=0, I change the 0 to a 1.

Hi,
Not all features are there, including controlling NVDA via speech (that's for Dragon for now).

Hi,
Nothing else comes to my mind tat the moment as I don't use Dragon to test this add-on (I use WSR).

Hi,
Yep, this suggests Dragon might have been installed somewhere other than paths assumed by the add-on.

not sure if this is what you were after

>>> os.environ["programfiles"] 'C:\\Program Files (x86)'
>>> os.environ["programw6432"] 'C:\\Program Files'

Hi,
To copy console output, after you type commands, press F6, then copy what you see in the edit field.

Hi,
One more: Can you do the following for me:
1. Open NVDA Python Console (Control+NVDA+Z).
2. Type the following as exactly as shown (press ENTER after each line):
os.environ["programfiles"]
os.environ["programw6432"]
Reply to me with whatever you get from these commands. Perhaps Dragon was installed somewhere other than default program files path.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi Greg

There is no specific NVDA command I am aware of but the Excel command to select a column is Ctrl+spacebar from anywhere in the target column and to select an entire row it’s shift+spacebar, again from anywhere in the row.
There is probably a way to see all the sheet names but I just use Ctrl+pageup/down to read them, so I don’t know the specific command.

Cheers

Chris

Question 1: If a sighted user wants to format all the cells in column C, he would click on the letter C at the top of the column to highlight all the cells in that column. How do you do that with NVDA?

Question 2: What is the NVDA command to get to the worksheet listing at the bottom of the page? Once you get there, I know that you use the Control/Page Up or Down to move between worksheets you have created.

Thanks.
