Problems with Thunderbird 45

Arnþór Helgason

I may have missed this subject.
Since thunderbird 45 came around I have had constant problems. I only get some information about what is new in Thunderbird and I can hear that some emails arrive but I am unable to open them, send email and work with maps. My only solution has been the Gmail software on the web.
What is the problem and can it be solved?

Best regards,
Arnthor Helgason

It is better to base opinions on facts as much as possible rather than assuming or hoping based on a generalization unsupported by facts or statistics.  Assuming the worst can lead to not taking advantage of many online opportunities because of fear not based on what facts indicate should be one's attitude or approach.

Hi Antony:

I think you are right, but it is better to assume the worst and hope
for the best.  That way, you are less likely to be taken by surprise.

Hi:

I think that the add-ons are also tested for malware before they are approved.

Hi,

I did a similar search yesterday typing in the phrase VLC media
player
help
and they do have a wiki with all of their documentation there
including
a
table listing all of the available hot keys. Since it is an open
source
project, some of the writing is dated, I believe that one of the
files
was
last updated as far back as 2011 with no updates since then though.
The
program itself, uses the classic windows graphic user interface and
as
you
arrow through the menus, the corresponding keyboard shortcuts are
presented
to you so if push comes to shove, you can with a degree of patience
create
your own custom sheet tailored to your needs.

Running old versions is certainly not optimal. Release versions of Windows 10, such as creator update are better.

The latest snapshot still has some silence pauses after first running up Mail or Edge the first time.

You can only use built in OCR support if you run Windows 10, which you don't.  You will either have to use the add on or not have the feature.

Re: NVDA problem with Browsers

That's only the best solution if you don't need or want to use the program.  Considering the potential consequences, unless I have an image of the drive so I could restore proper functionality, I wouldn't take such a chance.  While I'm not sure of this, I believe I saw comments here from one or more Windows users who, after uninstalling office, had to put a new installation of Windows on their machines.  I believe one person tried system restore and that didn't correct the problem.  they must not have had a drive image and it appears that one or more people who have discussed this have had to reinstall everything.  There are some things that are better left alone.

Hi Nasrin,

ARIA properties allow web developers to provide accessibility
information
for new types of controls. ARIA Live Regions are an example of these,
where parts of a web page may update automatically, for instance to
provide
constantly updated information on something. ARIA is used to tell the
screen reader things like which parts of the page need to be read as
they
are updated and which should be ignored. In the case of ARIA
placeholder,
it is a little bit like a label, which might give the screen reader
more
information about a particular control. ARIA grid is a way of
representing
tabular data. There are many ARIA features which on the surface seem
to
replicate traditional HTML elements, and where all you need can be done
with a traditional HTML element, it is better to use those.

For the most part, the average user doesn't need to know a lot about
ARIA,
although, I did mention it right up the top of the post, so good
question
to ask!

eSpeak, as with most things, is updated from time to time by its
developers. Where possible, we try to include a relatively recent
version
with NVDA. We updated to one newer build awhile ago because it
improved
pronunciation for Italian. With this one, it fixes a problem some
users
had with words being clipped or cut off. So with updates like that,
some
users may not notice any difference at all while for others, it is a
huge
improvement.

Re getting an error downloading the latest snapshots, what error are
you
getting (and what browser)? I just tried here and could download both
the
latest next and the latest master builds and both work fine for me now.
Possible it was a temporary glitch. If you still get the error, let me
know.

I did see your other e-mail re the spelling? There is another piece of
work which will essentially let you do the same thing, so that should
resolve that issue for you. The work hasn't started yet so I can't
tell
you how long it will take.

Kind regards

Re: NVDA problem with Browsers

i think that the best solution for me is not installing office program
in the first time!
i uninstalled with geek uninstaller free version and scanned and
deleted files remained in the registry and nvda works correctly.

On 7/13/17, Gene <gsasner@ripco.com> wrote:
The solution is not to uninstall it. Programs don't take much room and if
you are so low on disk space that having office installed is causing
problems due to lack of space, it's past time to get an external USB hard

I also believe I saw a message on this subject yesterday that said that
registering the dlls solved the problem after Office was uninstalled. Don't
count on it and don't uninstall office believing that you can solve the
problem that way. My recollection is that I've seen messages from others
saying that the registration procedure didn't solve the problem. There are
some things that should just be left alone.

I'll add that I don't know if a different uninstallation program might
uninstall Office and not cause problems so there may be a solution But I
wouldn't do it until I saw many reports from people running the version of
office I had with the version of Windows I had with the uninstaller that
reported no bad effects.

Re: NVDA In-Process 13th July 2017

Quentin Christensen

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure when different browsers added support for various ARIA elements, however, I would strongly recommend that whichever browser you choose to use, you keep it up to date.  So many different types of malware and other attacks exploit vulnerabilities in both older operating systems and older software, particularly browsers.

Re downloading snapshots, for each, it lists the version, the date / time and a download link.  For example, the latest Next build is:

14189,16d28e60 Wed Jul 12 07:50:38 2017 Download

Skip the number part and go across to the word "download" and activate that link, that will download the executable file, ready for you to use.  The link on the version number takes you to Appveryor, which is the tool we use to automate builds.   The information on that first link is really more for the programmers than the users.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Has anyone figured out the new version of spotify?

I can't seem to see all my albums, just something about a grid.

Also, does anyone subscribe to google play music?

I'm thinking of going that rout.

Hi Cearbhall

Both were posted tonight and i will add in where to look for the review text commands and object navigation into the tutorial, the written one at least.

I guess when you are so used to knowing the commands you get used to it. I only use desk top commands for the tutorials.

I thought i was saying them it must not have been in all cases.

Because there is quite a few commands for both the text review and object navigation commands it might be a better idea of where to look.

or i might put the commands that you would use to review the text the most.

With regard to the voice, I felt that the bass on your speaker was strong. My own speaker has a bass boost button. When I remove this the voice sounds lighter. However, this might be only a matter of taste and my not being familiar with the sound. Others might have no problem with it at all!

Hi Cearbhall

I will add that into the tutorial not to use the back space button. In these apps to get out of a screen i usually use the escape key or there might be a button that says like back or something. The second recording is the one with 2 at the end of it? They were done a while ago, but never posted along with the tutorial.

Do you think any more apart from the back space key and what i added yesterday about paying etc  should be added? I can always add to later on.

the recordings were just done with a digital mp3 player at 48 kb i think it was low quality as i do not have heaps of space in drop box so made smaller as not to take up heaps of space. The Gene voice was used as i find him clear and loud.

If this is the case I will hopefully post tonight.

Another snippet that should be in the tutorial:

I attempted to try the accessibility of the purchase screen in Microsoft store today. I found a game that I don’t want but that was not free and so should trigger the payment process. I fully expected to find a confirmation button and so could escape before creating a commitment to pay for something that I don’t want. After I opened the screen, I moved the review cursor down past the pay button and definitely did not activate it.  To get out of the screen, I pressed the backspace key, which is my usual way to get back from a web page to the previous one. I thought all was clear and that I had not initiated anything. I then went to Outlook and there was a message from Microsoft with a receipt for the purchase of the game that I thought I had avoided buying.  Somehow I must have triggered the pay button. Microsoft does warn that once you activate that button you are committed to the payment and cannot back out of it.

I got onto the local Microsoft help support by phone and got them to reverse the payment when I explained the circumstances and that I was only testing the software access. The adviser suggested that by pressing the Backspace key I triggered the “enter key” action and thus confirmed the purchase. He said that this had happened to him once before.

So, I think the tutorial should warn people to avoid the backspace key since it won’t escape from the screen anyway. Also they should be careful of the hair-trigger sensitivity of the pay button.

I just looked to see what it is selling for. it is a very good price at just under 30 us dollars. Will that same app work with your scanner or is it just phones? I have not had a full read of it yet.

I also did a basic tutorial on the store i think it is written and audio but did not buy any thing only just downloaded a free program etc.

The tutorials are if written still a draft the audio one should be right to go. It is more a over view.

If it does my scanner also it is sold.

Re: Avast, Avira, AVG or Sophos?

You may be right I do run off and on malwarebytes, I do have an add block and script blocker on firefox, never leave home without these.

I haven't as yet installed sophos yet but I do have an account.

On 13/07/2017 9:01 p.m., Gene wrote:

Enough malware can be contracted with the user simply going to a web site and taking no other action, that making it sound as though such precautions as you state is more or less going to prevent malware contraction is misleading and leads to a false sense of security.

To significantly reduce risks from such sites, using ad blockers and a script blocker or not allowing JAVA scripts to run unless they are needed are significant security enhancers. Using a good antimalware program or programs with real time protection can significantly protect you against such risks as well. You may want to take all these precautions or just run a really good antimalware program or programs, but just not doing things such as opening attachments, while important, is not adequate.

Sophos has gotten very favorable comments from just about all blind users whose comments I've seen. I would bet that it gets much higher ratings than Windows Defender in properly done reviews, but I'll leave that for those who are interested enough to check for themselves. It would be used in place of Windows Defender, not in conjunction with Windows Defender. And if you are having problems with your computer that you think may be the result of malware, getting sighted help and asking Bleeping Computer for help in thoroughly checking for and removing malware would be a good idea. Some of the procedures that will be recommended may require sighted assistance. I don't know that but I suspect it. Bleeping Computer has volunteer geeks who help with malware. it is one of the major activities of the site.

I have tried some of the other anti virus software about for free, and do

I am also confused as to what you mean by "complement," in

your system since antivirus products use techniques that look like a
virus
to each other. That's why you cannot ever run two antivirus programs
simultaneously. Every third party product I know of, including those
you've
named, automatically disable Windows Defender when they are installed
and
reenable it if they are uninstalled.

I would not consider either AVG (for accessibility reasons
and the
fact that it's become insanely oversensitive and false positive laden)
or
Avast. Here is what security expert quietman7 had to say as a caution
about
these two on the thread entitled, Looking for a good free Anti-Virus, on
BleepingComputer.com:
---------------------------
You may want to read...
a.. AVG privacy policy update allows it to sell your browsing history
b.. Avast and AVG Antivirus products collect personal data for
selling to
advertisers
More of a concern for most users, are the nagging pop-ups, nuisance
advertising and prompts to upgrade to the paid version or purchase other
products.

See my comments in Choosing an Anti-Virus Program as to why I recommend
ESET
or Emsisoft Anti-Malware.
------------------------------------

I cannot speak, at all, to the accessibility of ESET or Emsisoft
Anti-Malware, but I didn't want to alter his message.

If you engage in safe web browsing practices the probability of getting
any
infection is quite low. I have been using Windows Defender now for a
couple of years, after having used AVG for probably a decade before
that,
and Avast and Panda on a couple of other machines and it has worked just
fine. But, of course, I have little basis for saying that since no
antivirus product I've used has detected an infection for well over a
decade
now.

Your own history of having any viruses, malware, etc., ever picked up by
your scanners is the first and best predictor if you're likely to get
one
later. It's not a 100% accurate prediction, nothing is, but none of
these
programs keeps you 100% safe, either.

Computing.

If it were that easy not to get malware, then we wouldn't need antimalware programs.  Taking precautions is important but it's hardly any sort of guarantee or close to it, that you won't get malware.

I'm using superantispyware as well as defender/msse. Most dodgy stuff coming
in from others seems to get swatted by one or the other, though it has to be
said most are not actually malware, more adware in fact.

I have tried some of the other anti virus software about for free, and do
not reckon any of them offer anything over the current stuff. As many have
said before I'm sure, if you are the unfortunate person to encounter
something so new nobody has figured out how to block it yet, then nothing in
the world is going to save you. Your best defence as always is  question all
emails with links and all links to web sites you are not familiar with and
of course all links that look slightly wrong to be the real thing.

Re: Avast, Avira, AVG or Sophos?

Antony Stone

This is a ridiculous comment.

It's true that some people's computers do get infected with viruses from time
to time (and, of course, some organisations' networks get infected too), but
to suggest that "all systems have or will have viruses on them at all times"
is just ridiculous scare-mongering.
