As I've said before, you are describing the Brittish voice.  That voice has unpleasant characteristics.  The American voice doesn't have the characteristics you are discussing.

I am sorry you have problems with Jaws also. Jaws 18 is fine for me at this
end.

There is a known issue with Code Factory Eloquence  with NVDA.

I have seen several complaints from NVDA users on other lists than this
which complain of the extreme delay with NVDA loading with Code Factory
Eloquence. This caused some to recommend using the illegal NVDA Eloquence
addon  as an alternative which drew an angry response from the person
retailing Code Factory Eloquence in this country.

If was from this person retailing the Code Factory product in this country
that I learnt the tip of amending sound properties in the Control Panel  as
a partial  solution to the slow loading. He in turn had got this advice from
Code Factry as I understand it.

Presumably as not all people have the same configurations in their Sound
Control Panel applet  the  experience of people experiencing this delay may
well vary.

Is NVDA right for me?

Fantasy Sports <fantasylife@...>

Hello group,

I have a cognitive impairment and can't read large amounts
of text easily without getting fatigue.

I am trying to decide between using Windows Narrator, NVDA,
JAWS, or possibly other programs.

Although NVDA is free and is supposed to be good, I'm not
sure it is the right program for me. Let me explain.

There are several people using this family computer, and I
don't want an intrusive program that will take over Windows,
and run in the background and bother them.

We all use the same log in, and I don't want people to have
to log on and off as different users. I myself don't even
want to use this type of software all the time when I use
the computer.

I personally just want a program that I can turn on and off
whenever I want to read out loud a specific piece of text
at any given time.

Windows Narrator is pretty easy to turn on and off, but its
extremely difficult to control what it reads out loud, it
just starts spewing without end whatever is on the screen.

I also don't know how the voice sounds in NVDA, but I don't
want something too robotic sounding.

So based on that I just want to use this program in a limited
way, is NVDA right for me?

Also is this software free?

It is a long thread so my initial fix may have got lost.

I did contact the Code Factory Retailer and the advice is to simplify your sound card properties in Control Panel , that is remove special affects like surround sound or other themes and just rely on basic stereo output.

It is not perfect but it definitely improve matters.

I'll let others put up the way they do this, but do beware.
If the machine you are using the temp version on is running windows 10,
there are a lot of things that won't read any more that did in windows xp
and 7. It seems the paranoid security folk have made it very hard to get at
some accessibility apis from a program not being run as an admin.
I notice for example some bits of windows just do not work, and ccleaner
loses its list of problems etc.
I was very disappointed in this, as it seems that Microsoft have made
everyone use Narrator on 10 if its not your computer.

Hi

It will depend also how you start narrator in earlier versions of Windows to. there were a couple of different ways to start it depending on the windows version but using the Windows key + letter R then typing in narrator then pressing the enter key would usually do it.

I think in xp, vista etc you could do it this way.

If not then in xp and i think vista it was the windows key + letter U then the ALT key + letter N

Later on i think in 7 and up it was the windows key + the enter key to start narrator.

I think the directions are up there on the web site any how i would have to check to be sure.

The older xp system i think it was you could plug it in and a auto play menu would come up with start nVDA but in later versions this was stopped.

it also depends if you done it on a CD if the auto play menu was enabled or not.

I do have some different ways on my website along with any extra files that might be needed. The extra files were more for the auto play menu part of windows.

The steps were either done using a Windows 7 machine and i think on windows 10 as well.

the link to the pages where the audio or written tutorials are can be found at http://accessibilitycentral.net/nvda%20audio%20tutorials.html
You can jump down by heading to the portable tutorials. there are a few different ones to pick from.

I like the one where you name the usb stick qqq then make a folder on the usb stick called nvda then have all the files put into it.

if you get stuff on a new machine you can always bring up narrator to start your copy of nvda as well.

I am so used to starting a computer without narrator i have got used to it.

Any how have a sus and look for the ones that say portable.

They are easy to follow.

hope they help.

There is more than one way to make a portable copy of NVDA. Here is one way. I am assuming that NVDA is already installed on your machine.

Major new steps start on new lines.

First, create a folder in which you want to install NVDA.
Then, while NVDA is running, open the NvDA menu with NVDA key not.
Down arrow to tools.
Press enter. You are now in a submenu.
Down arrow to create portable copy and press enter.
You are now in a dialog.
Tab to the browse button and press enter.
If you don't know how to work with the dialog you are now in, ask here.
Open the folder you have created to place NVDA in.
Then continue to make the portable copy. Look around the dialog and if you have questions, ask here.
Once yu have made the portable copy, copy the folder you created onto the thumb drive.
Or cut it to the thumb drive, whichever you wish.
To run NVDA from the thumb drive, connect the thumb drive to the machine you want to run it on. Have Narrator running before you connect the thumb drive. If you don't know how to run Narrator, ask here.
Once Narrator is running, find the folder that contains NVDA on the thumb drive. Open the folder.
Look for NVDA.EXE and press enter. You will probably just here nvda but not exe.
NVDA will run. I don't know if you will be asked anything first such as if you want to run the file. I don't think so.
Then close Narrator. It will cause no problem to have NVDA and Narrator running simultaneously so close Narrator and continue running NVDA.

Re: Accessible File Managers

To be honest, with some configuration the windows 10 explorer is no worse than the previous v3ersions. It still can fall over and restart just like 7, and get you into a fuddle just like xp, but it does seemingly keep files in order even straight after a copy.
The only issues I've seen are the different folder types needing to each be customised separately into your chosen format then making each type the same as the others of that type, and the slight sluggishness on scrolling.

Hi Gene,
I apologize for not elaborating on the usability issues I am currently
facing, and in fact, do not intend to detail them as such either. I
reported them on the NVDA issue tracker, because they heavily pertain
to screen reading and accessibility, and hope NV Access may analyse
those issues as time permits.
Thanks Tyler and Pete for the file manager recommendations, will check
out Explorer++ in particular as well.
Thanks.

The way I see it, code factory's eloquence uses the same Eloquence DLL with the same product; it just does it in a more hacky and less reliable way. So if you pay for code factory Eloquence, you've legally licensed your copy; and if you use the unofficial Eloquence, you have stability and you can honestly say you've paid for it. I'm sure that's not how the law sees it, but it's just my thoughts. I personally find that the code factory one is less reliable as well.

There is a known issue with Code Factory Eloquence with NVDA.

I have seen several complaints from NVDA users on other lists than this which complain of the extreme delay with NVDA loading with Code Factory Eloquence. This caused some to recommend using the illegal NVDA Eloquence addon as an alternative which drew an angry response from the person retailing Code Factory Eloquence in this country.

If was from this person retailing the Code Factory product in this country that I learnt the tip of amending sound properties in the Control Panel as a partial solution to the slow loading. He in turn had got this advice from Code Factry as I understand it.

Presumably as not all people have the same configurations in their Sound Control Panel applet the experience of people experiencing this delay may well vary.

I managed to improve matters to some degree by going into the Sound Properties in Windows Control Panel, selecting my default sound device and turning off all the fancy affects like surround sound and just selecting just basic stereo as my output format.

This has had the affect of slightly diminishing the funkier music output from my PC but I am not now waiting upt to a minute or more for NVDA to load.

I still get the problem of NVDA not responding with large file explorer windows but what I have learnt is that if you turn Narrator on with Windows Enter temporarily you can navigate your file lists fine until NVDA wakes up and starts responding again. I just turn Narrator off when NVDA finally catches up.

I'll let others put up the way they do this, but do beware.
If the machine you are using the temp version on is running windows 10, there are a lot of things that won't read any more that did in windows xp and 7. It seems the paranoid security folk have made it very hard to get at some accessibility apis from a program not being run as an admin.
I notice for example some bits of windows just do not work, and ccleaner loses its list of problems etc.
I was very disappointed in this, as it seems that Microsoft have made everyone use Narrator on 10 if its not your computer.

I was under the impression that embedded eloquence in Jaws is not able to be used outside, so you need to have one of the two, I think legal versions for nvda.
as an aside and this is not recommended, the old sappi 4 version distributed as via voice out loud with the old ibm home page reader, seems to be actually very reliable. I really cannot take Eloquence though as I find its lisp very annoying after a while!

Re: Accessible File Managers

Hi Gene,
I apologize for not elaborating on the usability issues I am currently
facing, and in fact, do not intend to detail them as such either. I
reported them on the NVDA issue tracker, because they heavily pertain
to screen reading and accessibility, and hope NV Access may analyse
those issues as time permits.
Thanks Tyler and Pete for the file manager recommendations, will check
out Explorer++ in particular as well.
Thanks.

Dear all,
In the wake of severe usability problems I am encountering with
Windows Explorer in the past several months with which I do not desire

managers for Windows which are free, accessible and advisable. A
simplistic interface would be preferable, since I perform tasks of
little complexity on the computer when it comes to file management.
I would appreciate any assistance.
Thanks.

just remove all of the files related to eloquence in the codefactory addon, and use the you know the other one

I am sorry you have problems with Jaws also. Jaws 18 is fine for me at this end.

Hi,

Using jfw 18 with elequence, I have this problem sop I don't think this is an NVDA problem.  JMT.

Yes I have had this issue of extreme delayed start up along with the additional issue of NVDA and eloquence freezing in large  File Explorer windows.

This does not happen with the  illegal versions of Eloquence which is disappointing from a a Code Factory quality point of view.

I am experiencing a significant delay after launching NVDA with Code Factory’s Eloquence implementation selected as the speech synthesizer.

I am running on Windows 10.

Does anyone else experience this issue and, if so, what steps have resolved this issue?

Thanks,

Darrell
