anyone willing to look into NVDA and Zara Radio?

Bob Cavanaugh <cavbob1993@...>

Hi all,
Can anyone look into NVDA with Zara Radio? They have a paid version
and a free version, which is the one I have. There are three things
I'd like taken a look at:
1. Apparently, there are buttons at the bottom of the window for
scheduling events, adding jingles, changing the playlist mode, and a
couple other things I can't remember at the moment, but there seems to
be no way to access them with conventional navigation methods. Can
anyone try to use object navigation to try and access these buttons
and then walk me through how to do it?
2. When playing and the Zara window has focus, NVDA speaks an endless
series of percentages. Can a change be made so that these aren't
spoken?
3. When working with the playlist, there are actually two lists,
neither of which are read by NVDA. I can see what is in them, but
using NVDA I don't know what they are. I can't remember what System
Access reads for the first one if it is empty, but if there are
elements in it and a length is available, it actually reads the
length. When tabbing, System Access also reads that the second list is
the upcoming events list. Can a change be made in NVDA so that it
reads these things?

If money is an issue, I encourage people to make the transition to an alternative office suite and email client.  And for the record, and this is just my opinion, if you are currently an Outlook user I doubt very seriously as to whether you'd find the Win10 Mail App an acceptable alternative.  I hate it, and it's because it is an extremely feature light email client, which is fine if you're not used to a feature rich one, but likely to be disappointing if you are and you use a lot of the features of your current email client.

Hi.

I've not tried this myself, but wouldn't this be possible using review cursor? How it would work, you'd put the review cursor on the control you'd like to monitor, then turn off the review cursor moving due to caret movement, then turn off the navigator object moving due to focus changes (NVDA+6 and NVDA+7 respectively). Now, you would be able to, say, use Numpad 8 to review the text of the navigator object that you have left the review cursor on, while you go about your business doing other things.

Sounds a little complicated, I know, but it's worth a shot.

Hi, Milton,

I think NVDA will work well with outlook 2019. The mail app does work pretty well wityh NVDA. Thunderbird is really good too. That's what I'm using.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. I've done that. The issue seems to come when
I'm reviewing the screen sometimes reviewing gets for lack of a better
word stuck, either goes to the bottom of the screen or when I make a
change to a dialog again reverts to the bottom of the screen rather
than holding my current line.

Thanks.

Yes, i use russian+english language pair, so they have different character sets, latin and cyrillic. For example, you can try to read any russian site, 3dnews.ru, yandex.ru and so on. Or you can  set some of russian voices as default, correctly configure auto lang switching, and then type some english text in notepad. Then, if you will move between strings of entered text using arrows, NVDA will use english voice, previously selected for english language in auto lang switching configuration dialog, but if you'll use "say all", it will read this text with russian default voice. I also need to say, that in older versions of driver(3.0.x), there was no same issue and auto lang switching works fine everywhere, including "Say all".
I have very beginner's skills in programming, but tried to investigate what happens when i use "Say all". I found patchedSpeak function in _init.py file, located in Vocalizer driver folder and added "tones.beep(100, 100)" in it, and also "import tones" at the beginning of this file. I found that in version 3.1.2 there is no call to this function when using "Say all" (no beep occurs), and in version 3.0.8, when i use "say all", a beep occurs indicating that function patchedSpeak is called. Maybe, this information will be useful for you.

Re: Looking for a NVDA Add-on to have this funcion

This is equivalent to the active frame, or something like that, of Jaws...

I think it is very usefull in certain situations...

I think we can do it in NVDA in two ways, at least...

1 - Using the OCR facility in NVDA and Windows 10, allow the creation of a frame, by positioning the mouse or entering the left upper corner and right lower corner coordinates, and then performing OCR to that location;

2 - Determining the navigation object and his location, announcing the text...

Re: Working with Python in NVDA

To be honest, trying to work with the latest version in the long run will be easier.

Right now to get my gits, I load github desktop, the only reason I have git standard as well is for the programs compiled in electron forge.

That needs git.

Nodejs has npm which is how I will install everything.

Running the extra tools installer will install chocolatey which will by default install python and visual studio tools whatever the latest version is.

Now you don't need to install that but if you ever install choco then thats going to happen by default.

Of course, a lot of my projects are java based but python is also supported.

Python 3.8 and later (it actually works apart from needing to install Python
3.8 specific dependencies):
https://github.com/josephsl/nvda
The branch to check out is "walrus" (without quotes) in reference to the
walrus operator (:=), which makes certain conditional statements easier to
read and digest (walrus operator, or assignment expression, was introduced
in Python 3.8). In the coming days, I will be releasing a really bleeding
edge version of NVDA (based on latest alpha snapshot), or for that matter,
two builds:
* Python 3.7 with wxPython GUI toolkit update (version 4.1.1)
* Python 3.8 with wxPython GUI toolkit update (4.1.1)

IMPORTANT: these bleeding-edge snapshots will come from my own fork of NVDA
and thus is unsupported by NV Access i.e. these are prototypes. The first
build will not affect add-ons that much, whereas the second build will break
at least one add-on and will cause BRLTTY support features to not function.
Both builds will have GUI toolkit related bugs, the most important being
NVDA will appear to freeze when you open NVDA's about dialog and similar
dialogs.

I recently installed Python 3.9 on my Windows 10 desktop machine.
The first thing I noticed was that the statement import louis produces an
error, because the liblouis python bindings cannot be found.

At launch opens a console-like IDE. NVDA handles editing of lines nicely,
but there is no way to read previous lines except by pressing numpad 7.
There is also no wayh to
view the entire window, starting at the top.
I've also used NVDA with the Bash subsystem and ssh, with the same problem.

Any comments will be welcome.

Hi,

Ah, you’ve contacted the right person…

Regarding virtual desktop switching announcement order: this is due to a discussion a few years ago between NVDA developers then and I. Because Windows may not update the desktop name in a timely manner, I instructed NVDA to wait close to half a second before announcing which virtual desktop you are on, hence the order might be a bit unintuitive. I may need to revisit this part of the add-on in the near future (currently testing more modern code in Windows 10 App Essentials that won’t show up until early next year).

My question is,

Can I switch the order in which it announces?

Currently it announces the currently app in the desktop then the desktop number as I switch between them;

I’d like to be able to have it announce the desktop number prior to the active app name for that desktop.

Is this possible?

Can it be configured somewhere?

This is not really important as the thing does work as intended.

Because of jaws, I’m used to having the desktop number announced first as I ctrl+windows+left or right arrows to a particular desktop.
