Re: problems using NVDA with my new laptop

Since you are using a laptop NVDA should be on laptop keyboard layout.

Betsy,

As I just said to someone else on the JAWS list who's having laptop issues:  what is the make and model number?

That's a piece of information that's really pivotal in many cases.

Re: NVDA and outlook questions

Dan Miner

Well, if it is a 2016 based version then you likely will have the problem of it not reading suggestions easily. I always had to fiddle around with it to get anything. I vaguely remember using object navigation to dive into the enclosing frame It I was truly needing to use that feature, I would just switch to JAWS 18 and it would read in a more natural way. I would give recent Narrator a try and see how it fairs with that dropdown.

I have Outlook from Office 365 and if I recall this thread was about the To field and reading the type-ahead suggestion reading? When I was using Outlook 2016, I had this problem of it not reading but I did a bit of testing again on this version. It seems to be working fine with the type ahead for reading the first suggestion and changing as I progress on typing. Also, a simple down arrow will read the remaining suggestions. I don't recall which version you have but I am wondering if that is a factor here.

I think there is a setting.
You need to go to, in Outlook to File then Options and then under Mail find the setting which says Automatic Name checking and make sure that that is checked.
I have this checked and if Dennis does not then this may explain the different behaviour.

I know of no such setting. This is very likely another instance where you have to help the screen-reader in some way by using read current line as you type. I don't know why Outlook is different, in the address bar in the browsers I use, autocomplete will read as what I type changes.

This is slightly odd as this is precisely hwat NVDA does for me in Outlook.
I have just tried it and if I press K the most recent email I have typed

whose name begins with K. Pressing the down arrow reveals other addresses beginning with K.

I wonder if there is a setting in Outlook about keeping recent addresses you need to turn on?

Having said that it is also true that this feature does not, for me at least, any longer, reveal results from all your contacts. I often have to go into the to button and search in there to reveal all my addresses in contacts.

Betsy,
First, it's not clear what settings your daughter may have exported or transferred to your new laptop. If this has not already been done it might be best to download and install a fresh copy of NVDA from the NV Access Web site. If this has not already been done try doing that and see if your hotkeys work as they should.

Are you saying that tab stops moving you? I don't know why and there may be a problem with the way NVDA works with the site. I don't know just how you are trying to move. if by link, try k. If you want to move in other ways, we can discuss other ways. Why did you press numpad 2 before pressing down arrow?

Also, what browser are you using? Though there may be a problem, we don't know if the problem would still occur with another browser.

Hi all,

I don't use speech viewer all that often, but as my last message

indicated, I find it useful for testing things. That being said, when

I'm done testing, the only way to close speech viewer seems to be to

restart NVDA. Is this a bug or was this done on purpose? I've tried

both alt+F4 and control+W with no luck.

I just tested this on my copy of Outlook 2016, and yes, it behaves
differently than I am used to with System Access, but not so
differently that I would write to the list on my own about it. With
System Access, it does read as I believe the original poster wants,
which is that as soon as you start typing, the screen reader started
reading the first name that appeared. In NVDA, you have to press down
arrow in order to get it to read the suggestions, but it reads all the
suggestions as expected.

I might be able to fix this but I don't have access to any Office 2013
machine. Would you be able to provide me a log as follows:

Restart with add-ons disabled.
Set log level to debug
In NVDA's advanced settings in the debug logging group enable MSAA
logging category - ensure that all other categories are disabled to
declutter the log.
- Try tabbing through the ribbon when it is collapsed.

Please send content of the log viewer privately to me.

It is possible I am the one responsible for this regression as I've introduced some changes to the way in which ribbons are accessed in older versions of Office during NVDA 2020.2 development cycle. Is this happening for you only when ribbon is collapsed?

don't have to remember where I hit what, but I usually leave that off.
Usually, with System Access in both Gmail's web interface and in
Outlook, and with NVDA in Outlook, emails like this work fine, but not
with Gmail on the web and NVDA.

Re: DVD ripper that works with NVDA?

George,

I saw your longer reply as well.  Do you actually need to rip them?  I would think that once you mount this sort of ISO as a virtual DVD you should be able to play it directly from that virtual DVD directory.  But what I cannot remember is what "the beginning of DVD content" is named file-wise.

One of the huge advantages in newer versions of Windows is that you can mount ISO files as virtual media and have Windows "play with it" as though it were that media itself.  If push comes to shove, I'd try mounting one, then opening the media player of your choosing, and trying to play that drive that's really not a drive but that Windows has set up as though it were upon mounting.

Yours is an unusual situation, but it may be easier to resolve by doing little to nothing.  It will take some playing to see.

Are you saying that the problem is that you have to press tab more than once to move to the next link? Regardless of why that is, use k to move by link and see if that solves the problem.

bug or feature? alt+F4 doesn't close speech viewer

Bob Cavanaugh <cavbob1993@...>

Hi all,
I don't use speech viewer all that often, but as my last message
indicated, I find it useful for testing things. That being said, when
I'm done testing, the only way to close speech viewer seems to be to
restart NVDA. Is this a bug or was this done on purpose? I've tried
both alt+F4 and control+W with no luck.

Re: DVD ripper that works with NVDA?

George McCoy

I respectfully suggest, sir, that that is a singularly inappropriate comment. Brian is a great guy and has been a tremendous asset to this list. I also respectfully submit that an Us-against-them mentality does no one any good.

Mr. Vogel was, quite rightly, asking for clarification of my issue, which I was more than happy to provide.

Thank you,

George

Not everything is a sighted world.

On 12/29/2020 11:20 AM, Brian Vogel wrote:
It really would help at this point if Mr. McCoy would clearly indicate whether he's seeking to rip versus burn.

If you have an ISO file, as originally stated, and want to get that on to optical media as other than an ISO file then you typically burn it using any one of a number of previously mentioned programs.

If you have a DVD from which you wish to extract something (rip), whether to an ISO (which is well-nigh impossible for commercial DVDs) or getting the audio as an MP3 or similar, that's a completely different thing.

Ripping and burning are the flip sides of the same coin, where ripping is pulling from optical media to some other format and burning is taking other formats and putting them on optical media (and how that's done depends on what, exactly, is being burned).  There's lots of talk that's at cross purposes here because one has to make an assumption that either the ISO part is wrong, and we are talking about ripping, or the use of rip is wrong and we're talking about burning an ISO (image) file to disc.

Re: DVD ripper that works with NVDA?

George McCoy

Apologies for the confusion.

I have some .iso files that contain classic tv programs. The .iso files were made for backup purposes. The  dvd disks are degraded and are now unplayable. I can mount the .iso images. They appear in the devices list on "This Pc" and I can open them and see the files list.

I could, of course, burn them onto dvds again, but what I'd really like to do is convert the files to a windows compatible format directly from the .iso images.

I looked into using vlc, but it streams the dvd content and records it ina windows compatible file format. That means that the programs are converted in real time. I have roughly 150 hours of content. I'd like to convert it before I die of old age. 😉

I want both audio and video so I can enjoy these old shows again with my sighted wife and children.

I think Handbreak might do the trick, but I'm finding it difficult to navigate with nvda. If anyone has ripped dvd disks with handbreak, I'd appreciate it if you would email me offlist and give me some pointers. Maybe it would also handle mounted .iso files.
