Re: NVDA and outlook questions

Bob Cavanaugh <cavbob1993@...>

I just tested this on my copy of Outlook 2016, and yes, it behaves
differently than I am used to with System Access, but not so
differently that I would write to the list on my own about it. With
System Access, it does read as I believe the original poster wants,
which is that as soon as you start typing, the screen reader started
reading the first name that appeared. In NVDA, you have to press down
arrow in order to get it to read the suggestions, but it reads all the
suggestions as expected.

I didn't use read to end, I used the down arrows to move past the

to press anything but tab if this was working properly.

Re: Word 2013 ribbon and NVDA 2020.3

I might be able to fix this but I don't have access to any Office 2013
machine. Would you be able to provide me a log as follows:

Restart with add-ons disabled.
Set log level to debug
In NVDA's advanced settings in the debug logging group enable MSAA
logging category - ensure that all other categories are disabled to
declutter the log.
- Try tabbing through the ribbon when it is collapsed.

Please send content of the log viewer privately to me.

I can no browse the lower ribbon with "Tab". I have this problem also with NVDA 2020.2 but not with NVDA 2020.1 or 2019.3. Tests done with copy of NVDA and add-ons disabled.
It is possible I am the one responsible for this regression as I've introduced some changes to the way in which ribbons are accessed in older versions of Office during NVDA 2020.2 development cycle. Is this happening for you only when ribbon is collapsed?

George,

I saw your longer reply as well.  Do you actually need to rip them?  I would think that once you mount this sort of ISO as a virtual DVD you should be able to play it directly from that virtual DVD directory.  But what I cannot remember is what "the beginning of DVD content" is named file-wise.

One of the huge advantages in newer versions of Windows is that you can mount ISO files as virtual media and have Windows "play with it" as though it were that media itself.  If push comes to shove, I'd try mounting one, then opening the media player of your choosing, and trying to play that drive that's really not a drive but that Windows has set up as though it were upon mounting.

Yours is an unusual situation, but it may be easier to resolve by doing little to nothing.  It will take some playing to see.

bug or feature? alt+F4 doesn't close speech viewer

Bob Cavanaugh <cavbob1993@...>

Hi all,
I don't use speech viewer all that often, but as my last message
indicated, I find it useful for testing things. That being said, when
I'm done testing, the only way to close speech viewer seems to be to
restart NVDA. Is this a bug or was this done on purpose? I've tried
both alt+F4 and control+W with no luck.

Re: DVD ripper that works with NVDA?

George McCoy

I respectfully suggest, sir, that that is a singularly inappropriate comment. Brian is a great guy and has been a tremendous asset to this list. I also respectfully submit that an Us-against-them mentality does no one any good.

Mr. Vogel was, quite rightly, asking for clarification of my issue, which I was more than happy to provide.

Thank you,

George

It really would help at this point if Mr. McCoy would clearly indicate whether he's seeking to rip versus burn.

If you have an ISO file, as originally stated, and want to get that on to optical media as other than an ISO file then you typically burn it using any one of a number of previously mentioned programs.

If you have a DVD from which you wish to extract something (rip), whether to an ISO (which is well-nigh impossible for commercial DVDs) or getting the audio as an MP3 or similar, that's a completely different thing.

Ripping and burning are the flip sides of the same coin, where ripping is pulling from optical media to some other format and burning is taking other formats and putting them on optical media (and how that's done depends on what, exactly, is being burned).  There's lots of talk that's at cross purposes here because one has to make an assumption that either the ISO part is wrong, and we are talking about ripping, or the use of rip is wrong and we're talking about burning an ISO (image) file to disc.

Re: DVD ripper that works with NVDA?

George McCoy

Apologies for the confusion.

I have some .iso files that contain classic tv programs. The .iso files were made for backup purposes. The  dvd disks are degraded and are now unplayable. I can mount the .iso images. They appear in the devices list on "This Pc" and I can open them and see the files list.

I could, of course, burn them onto dvds again, but what I'd really like to do is convert the files to a windows compatible format directly from the .iso images.

I looked into using vlc, but it streams the dvd content and records it ina windows compatible file format. That means that the programs are converted in real time. I have roughly 150 hours of content. I'd like to convert it before I die of old age. 😉

I want both audio and video so I can enjoy these old shows again with my sighted wife and children.

I think Handbreak might do the trick, but I'm finding it difficult to navigate with nvda. If anyone has ripped dvd disks with handbreak, I'd appreciate it if you would email me offlist and give me some pointers. Maybe it would also handle mounted .iso files.

Re: How to turn off NVDA

hurrikennyandopo ...

Hi

When you said you fully uninstalled nvda was that only from program and features?

There is another area where the settings are keaped that should be deleted if you are having problems if the nvda.ini file mucks up.

After NvDA has been uninstalled from program and features  do the following.

Press the windows key + the letter R it will bring up a run dialogue box then type the following %appdata% then press the enter key.

The next screen that comes up will give you a list of directories  find the one called nvda then delete it out then close the screen with the alt + f4 key.

then reinstall nvda. It might be a good idea actually to grab a fresh copy of it from nvaccess then reinstall it to the pc.

Just in case you got a bad down load before.

Use the narrator screen reader to do the above unless you have some sight to do it.

Did you try a factory reset of nvda? this some times fixes any problems.

Use the nvda key + letter N to bring up the menu when it is running then arrow down to Reset configuration to factory defaults then press the enter key.

Make sure also that when you go to set it up again you see the message like which layout, do you want to use the caps lock key as a modifier start nvda at startup etc.

I think the short cut to do the reset is nvda key + ctrl + R 3 times.

Thank you for the troubleshooting efforts.

We did not select the option to launch NVDA at windows login. But even if it was, sounds like NVDA should not auto-launch after closing unless activated by a person. We did not change any other NVDA default settings.

So we uninstalled and reinstalled NVDA but the same thing happens - Insert+Q, dialog box open, default option is already Exit, dialog box closes but NVDA continues to read the screen. Then when forced to close through the Task Manager, NVDA still automatically relaunches at various times like launching an app.

This is a new system so it should be pretty clean. There are very few programs other than what came pre-installed with the laptop. AVG was downloaded to confirm no viruses on the computer or on the NVDA exe before we reinstalled. We even checked the startup options in the Task Manager and NVDA is not on the list. Our friend really wants NVDA but we are not sure what else to try.

I suspect the reason NVDA automatically comes on when set to run at the login screen when the secure desktop comes up may be that NVDA loads another version of itself to run when the secure desktop opens.  My guess is that there is a relation between this and the setting to automatically run at the login screen.  Perhaps one of the developers will discuss the matter.

This is news to me, and good information to have.  Most of the folks I've worked with who are using NVDA have their systems set up to log them straight in to their desktops on system (re)start, so they're not using that setting.

Several don't even have any screen reader turn on initially by default, as they will choose one based on what it is they're about to work with first if one screen reader works with that software better than the other.

Other than what you document above, which I've never seen because that setting was not set, I have not encountered NVDA doing a self-restart once explicitly exited from.

There are a number of possibilities here, but if the situation you described is known to not have been set up, I still strongly recommend an uninstall and reinstall to see if that clears things up, and paying particular attention to the dialogs when installing so the way you want NVDA to behave is actually set up correctly.

I presume you mean ISO files you need to burn.  Anyburn, ImgBurn, InfraRecorder, and CDBurnerXP (which works for DVDs and well past XP, why they've never changed the name I do not know) are all good options.  I find Anyburn to be the easiest.

Well, Tim, then please explain how one rips from an ISO.  I have never heard a single instance of the term "rip" being used where the ISO file is the media being ripped from.

In addition, this has absolutely nothing whatsoever with sighted versus blind, but speaking clearly, so I'd appreciate a bit of respect and consideration.  Asking for clarification is not disrespectful, nor was it done disrespectfully.  And when you play the stupid "blind vs sighted" card when it has nothing to do with any thing it is you that looks bad.

Word 2013 ribbon and NVDA 2020.3

Hi Lucas.
Effectively, the operation I have described is when the ribbon is reduced.
I can access to the lower ribbon when ribbon is not reduced.
I hadn't paid attention to this.
However, this is not a problem for NVDA 2020.1 and 2019.3.
Best regards.
Paul.

Hi,
I am with NVDA 2020.3, windows 10 2004, french Word 2013 and I have a problem with the ribbon.
NVDA speaks only "pane" when I select a tab of the ribbon (by space key) to expand lower ribbon.
I can no browse the lower ribbon with "Tab".
I have this problem also with NVDA 2020.2 but not with NVDA 2020.1 or 2019.3.
Tests done with copy of NVDA and add-ons disabled.
It is possible I am the one responsible for this regression as I've
introduced some changes to the way in which ribbons are accessed in
older versions of Office during NVDA 2020.2 development cycle. Is this
happening for you only when ribbon is collapsed?

Could it be Narrator and not NVDA?
