Hangouts still exists as a completely separate product, though it's said Google intends to discontinue it. Heaven knows they've done that before. Voice (which still exists, but is virtually never talked about other than to get a phone number) was replaced by Hangouts and now that's going to be replaced by something else. Arlene, just FYI, if you have a Google Account you "have" Google Hangouts, though you may or may not have or use the Hangouts App for the Google Chrome Browser or have a Google Voice Phone Number that would allow you to be called by someone else. Anyone with a Google Account can open the page hangouts.google.com in the web browser of their choosing and be able to make phone calls within the USA and Canada at no charge, make video calls to other Google Account holders, and, now, get into Google Meetings. You can also send a text message from Hangouts, but only if you have signed up for a Google Voice number and allow Hangouts to use it. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 Science has become just another voice in the room; it has lost its platform. Then start reading. Google publishes extensive accessibility documentation for virtually every product it makes, and Hangouts is among those. There's nothing like going to the source, and a simple web search takes you straight to it. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 Science has become just another voice in the room; it has lost its platform. NVDA and Creating Anchor Text?
David Russell
Hello Members,
I write general articles for a major freelance service, and sporadically, an order may appear in the work pool asking for something that includes "anchor text." I did not choose to take the order, because my Google research revealed that best practices shows anchor text in blue. I do not know if the program used by the freelance service has an option to select colored text. In the future, is there an HTML guide that will instruct one on how to create anchor text that automatically fills in whatever is necessary? Thanks in advance. I do receive the digest version of group emails. -- David Russell david.sonofhashem@gmail.com

Re: NVDA becoming unresponsive in Microsoft Teams
David Goldfield
This problem is not just an NVDA issue but is more of a problem with Teams and it's one which Microsoft is aware of, although I'm somewhat mystified that it's taken this long for a fix to be deployed to production. One way to get Teams to cooperate when accessibility seems to
break down is to resize the window. In other words, press
Windows-down arrow to minimize it and then restore or maximize it
again. This should get Teams to resume communicating with your
screen reader. David Goldfield, Blindness Assistive Technology Specialist JAWS Certified, 2019 WWW.DavidGoldfield.org On 6/3/2020 12:52 AM, Sarah k Alawami

Re: NeedSolution in auto open search
Quentin Christensen
In Windows 10, when you press the Windows key it opens the start menu, but the focus will likely go to the search (Cortana) edit. You can either arrow or tab and move past the edit, or type what you want to find. EG if you type Word, it will find Microsoft Word (if installed), WordPad and anything else with Word in the name. It will also find documents and settings. Regards Quentin.

It tends to happen pretty reliably. I’ll first turn off add-ins. Then, I’ll send you a typical document-without privileged information.

[ CAUTION - EXTERNAL SENDER ] I just tried this and it seems to work fine for me. I was reading the Microsoft Word with NVDA material which has headings with styles with numbering. I'm using Office 365 (64-bit) Version: 16.0.12730.20256 and NVDA 2020.1
If you restart NVDA with add-ons disabled does it still do it? If you've got a document you can reliably repeat with, would it be possible to confidentially send me a copy of it offlist please? Kind regards,
Quentin.

NVDA becoming unresponsive in Microsoft Teams
Luke Robinett
The conferencing/chat app Microsoft Teams is generally fairly accessible, but I’m experiencing a recurring issue. After a certain amount of time with the app loaded, eventually NVDA will no longer narrate the contents of the Teams GUI when using the tab key and Teams shortcut keys. When this happens, the only way to navigate the app is with object navigation. If I close and relaunch Teams it starts working again. This happens frequently, but I can’t quite pin down a specific condition or amount of time that triggers it. Sometimes it happens out of the blue, other times it seems to happen after I’ve shared my desktop on a call. I’ve tried restarting NVDA but it doesn’t fix it. I’ve also tried NVDA key + F5 to refresh the virtual buffer but still nothing. Can anyone think of any other troubleshooting steps I can try? Having to restart Teams is not ideal, as I’m often in the middle of a work conference and that’s akin to walking out of the room. Lol. Especially annoying/embarrassing when I’m trying to share content.

Re: Remotely controlling a computer with zoom while using NVDA
Luke Robinett
I know in other remote desktop situations, the remote machine needs to be running the screen reader in order for it to work, and the person needs to make sure they're sharing with audio. Might be interesting to have your friend load Windows Narrator then share their screen with you with PC audio enabled. I wonder if it would respond to your keyboard gestures.

So I am wondering if there is a way to do this with NVDA accessibly? Has anyone done this successfully? Any tip will be appreciated! thank you! Mohammad

Re: trouble with clickable elements
Steve Green
The competition has closed so I can’t see that particular code now, but from an accessibility perspective the coding is pretty horrid throughout the website.
For example, pages are entirely empty if JavaScript is turned off or fails to load for any reason. Although almost everyone has JavaScript enabled, this is still disgusting from a software engineering perspective. Have these people not heard of progressive enhancement? Or even graceful degradation? There are massive swathes of JavaScript on a website that needs virtually none at all. Heaven knows what it’s all doing.
They haven’t even applied any semantic structure, and they have done stupid things like adding HTML attributes to change links into buttons. They should throw it away and start again.
