Thanks.

I don't know how well Recuva works for most people.  I have had little success with it though there's no harm in trying.

However, if the files were on your machine at the time a restore point was made, if you are using the default settings, the files will be retained by shadow copy.  I won't go into how to find them in this message because I don't know how long they were on the drive nor do I know if you have System Restore active. I also don't know if the procedure is the same as mine since I don't know what version of Windows you are using.

Chris,

I can't swear to accessibility on this particular program, but others by the same maker (e.g. CCleaner) are.  Have a look at Piriform.com and their Recuva utility.  It's free and you've got nothing to lose but a few minutes time by trying it.  In the case of deleted files that bypassed the Recycle Bin or have been emptied from it, the sooner you try to recover them the better.

Re: Remote NVDA relay servers?

Christopher-Mark Gilland <clgilland07@...>

Firstly, are you running this server yourself, and do you have root access to it?

You say it didn't work, but what happened when you tried? Do you get packet loss if you try to ping the server? Do you have DNS properly set up, not just on port 80, http, but throughout the whole server, and, finally, are you allowing both inbound and outbound traffic through the firewall, and are you allowing the correct ports to be opened on both sides to accept the NVDA remote connection? Remember that just because you have a website, doesn't mean you have all things configured to run the server. It's not quite that simple as just putting in the domain of your website and immediately expecting it to work.

I almost never moderate the list because the list runs itself well in general.  But this is an exception.  The concern of who is the owner has been raised.  If someone knows something factual or convincing, fine.  Let the list know.  Other messages speculating and condemning and discussing Maheen are not proper on this list.  This is not a gossip list nor a list where people are condemned and discussed.  This entire thread has absolutely nothing to do with NVDA in the first place.  But I wouldn't have interfeered if it hadn't taken this turn and stopped in a reasonable time.  but the discussion is completely unacceptable as it stands.  I will block this thread if discussion doesn't stop in enough time for people to see this message.

Hello All. Again and again we see on the various blind and low-vision
technology related groups the desire of members to reach out to each other
regarding topics not related to the specific technology that's the focus of
those groups. This has caused friction at times, and has inspired the
creation of a new group: BlindLife.

The group description is as follows: "A place for discussing technology,
daily living tips n' tricks, accessibility, disability law, and pretty much
anything else with a focus on relation to those who are blind or
vision-impaired. Those who are sighted are welcome, too."

If you wish to have additional information about subscribing, etc., then
send an e-mail message to BlindLife+help@groups.io or search the web
interface for BlindLife.

This is still the best venue to which to direct your NVDA questions, but
now there's a place for much less constrained conversation.

On the pricing front, it will be in the range of 370-450 USD depending on taxes.

@Joseph - The outlook might be the same as Orbit but inside it is really different. One of the biggest difference is in refresh rate where our device is 3X faster than Orbit. It is based on a completely different technology which can be extended into a 20 cell, 40 cell and even a multi-line display. And we are committed to bringing them to the market.

Re: Dropbox problem (with fix)

Ah that's handy to know re the doc / docx thing.

I think what got my hackles up about this whole dropbox thing is that I just see it as really rude and arrogant when companies make you run around in circles trying to report issues to them.  For all its failings and indeed, edge is a good example of such, Microsoft have definitely made big steps in their approachability on both the feedback hub in general on Windows 10, and the disability answer desk particularly.

On Wed, Dec 14, 2016 at 10:17 AM, Gene <gsasner@...> wrote:
I read the help information on this subject.  It only comes up for some newer formats.  It doesn't come up for doc files.  It only comes up for file formats with an x at the end that are used in various newer Office programs.

Lots of companies cause accessibility problems that have known about accessibility for quite some time.  The right hand may not know what the left hand is doing or they may only consider accessibility once they start getting complaints.  Drop Box, to this point, has a much better record than company after company that has had previously accessible programs and their programs became completely or largely inaccessible in later versions.  How often have we discussed this problem in relation to antimalware programs?  And what about the Edge browser?  How many years did it take for Chrome to become almost fully accessible?

You're right of course, Gene, but it is still a major bug.  Even many sighted users, after opening a file in Word, will jump right back to the keyboard ready to type / edit etc and to have to then go back to the mouse to click in the document (assuming, of course, that you want to use the document itself rather than interacting with this dropbox badge for some reason) is, at least, annoying.  At the very least you should be able to dismiss it with say escape or something.  I guess I'm quite happy to explain accessibility to a small company to whom I will give the benefit of the doubt, of ignorance, but a company like dropbox has been around long enough that they no excuse.

Arlene, it seems to be Microsoft Office files - I'm not sure about doc rather than docx, but at a guess I'd say probably it would come up for them too?

the feature is for those colaborating using certain kinds of files such as docx.  However, as I understand the way this works from reading the help for the subject, if you are sharing a file, then any time you open it in Drop box, the badge will be displayed, using default settings.  The badge only is displayed for certain file types such as docx.  It is not displayed for older file types such as doc.
