Hi gene

I totally agree with you.

When ever i teach some one i have it so it says which mode it is in so the person knows when they can use single letter navigation in browse mode and when it says focus mode they can type say into a form.

then i will after a little let them know about the sounds but they usually stay with it been said.

In my ioinion, some type os sound would be helpful because you don't
always know if brouse mode is on or not.
I really don't see the point in changing the sounds. If it ain't broke
don't fix it.
If they do get rid of the sounds, they'll need to add something that
let's you know when brouse mode is active.

Run the installer.  Tab through the dialog and you will see that you mustg accept the license agreement.  The next dialog gives you choices such as install, make portable version and continue running.  Create a portable version.  Don't designate a folder with any other files in it.  The portable creator doesn't place the files in a folder of its own.  It will place the files directly in a folder you specify.  I had thought about commenting on this in the past but I didn't.  But NVDA should, in my opinion, create a folder when creating a portable version.  I had believed it would and so I designated a folder at one time and had the NVDA files placed in a folder with lots of other files.  Just as zip programs create a folder when unzipping, so, I think, should NVDA.

Re: installing NVDA on a machine with Window-eyes already installed

Since I'm on a Windows 10 machine, if you count Narrator which is built-in, I have four screen readers installed.  The other three being JAWS, NVDA, and Window Eyes.

None has ever given me an issue (and I've never tried to run more than one at the same time).

If NVDA had a jaws layout addon and a window eyes layout addon then it would work. or you could go into the input gestures dialog box and change NVDA keyboard gestures. that's the only way I can think of to do such changes.

And I have to concur.

In virtually all cases the "crutches" that are offered are just that:  crutches.   I don't like the JAWS virtual ribbon because it stops people from learning how to use the Windows ribbon, which is never going away.  There are all sorts of these things and they do as much, sometimes more, damage than good.

Not having used Window Eyes much I can't speak to what it would be like to transition to either JAWS or NVDA, but having done the JAWS to NVDA learning myself, and flip-flopping back and forth between the two, both are most functional when understood on their own terms.  And what they have in common is, in my opinion, far more than what separates them (though some of those separating things can come in really, really handy at times on both sides of the equation).

Hi.

My hp from 2012 running windows 7 had sound problems.

It was running beats audio sound card with its own drivers.

At the end I had to disable the beats audio sound and enable the generic windows sound driver.

The sound is not as good now but at least it is more responsive.

I don't even remember how I did this I found instructions on youtube.

Another thing that I don't like on laptops these days which hasn't got anything to do with sound is the fact that they don't include the applications key any more.

Very annoying.

And finally the fact that you have to press the fn key in combination with the function keys to perform windows functions such as rename, refresh etc.

I know you can fix this from the bios but you need sighted assistance to do it.

I think they are getting worst instead of any better.

Hi all.

Sorry if this issue has been discussed before.

I don't know what is going on with laptop sound cards these days, but nvda doesn't seam to work well with some of them.

I tried nvda on toshiba laptops, hp laptops and lenovo laptops and I didn't like the way nvda responds and sounds like.

I have got the impression that this problem started under windows vista or 7 and above.
I didn't find similar situations under windows xp.
I was using espeak in all situations.
I don't want to imagine how it would sound like with vocalizer or some other hi-q sapi5 voices which are heavier in resorces.
I found the following issues.

Sometimes nvda responds with some delay after we press a button on the keyboard.

The sound card cuts sometimes the beginning and the end of a word or sentence.

The sound card doesn't seam to cope well when doing things quickly such as typing, or when pressing arrow keys rubbitly.

Sometimes the issue can be fixed if we disable all the enhancements under playback settings but this option is not available in some laptops.

I am not very familiar with the issues system yet.

I searched but I didn't find something on laptops, sound cards, espeak etc.

If there isn't a similar issue perhaps I can create a new one.

Yesterday I encountered a very unusual situation where nvda was working well on a lenovo laptop, but it became very slow in responding after updating to the latest creators update of windows 10.

Narator on this particular laptop was responding well with the windows 10 voices.

I don't know if it would be possible to have different bitrates to choose for espeak in cases where nvda is not very responsive in some sound cards.

So what are your experiences with laptops these days and how did you fix any sound issues?

I don't know the exact models right now because the laptops belong to friends but if necessary I can find out.

Thanks

Nikos

Re: Moving to NVDA

Gene

It isn't practical for NVDA to have different layouts, one for JAWS, one for Window-eyes. the actual NVEDA layout and then two more laptop layouts as well.  In addition, why do you say it would make much difference.  If you know JAWS, and you evidently do, look at how many commonly used commands are the same or similar.  Time is NVDA key f12.  Read title bar is NVDA key t.  Read to end is NVDA key down arrow.  The only difference is that you have to use the down arrow key on the main keyboard.  You can't use the down arrow key on the numpad.  Most of the commands people use are Windows or program commands, regardless of screen-reader being used.

For Window-eyes users, there aren't that many different commands to learn.

And regardless of previous screen-reader, object navigation and screen review commands are different in NVDA.  A lot of people, whether they would benefit from knowing screen review and/or object navigation, never learn either, regardless of which screen-reader they are using.

If you tell us specifically what you would find easier, we can address those specific commands.  But the general contention that having all sorts of different layouts in NVDA is not practical nor would it be very helpful.  I consider the Window-eyes JAWS emulation layout to be a gimmick that actually works against people learning Window-eyes fully since the JAWS emulation doesn't incorporate all the Window-eyes commands.

I am finding that NVDA works pretty well as a alternative to Window Eyes

having a keyboard layout for Window Eyes and Jaws.  Window Eyes had a
Jaws keyboard layout to make Jaws user to also use WE.
