Re: Replying to the list using the web site

Gene

I wrote a reply in the correct area.  I can tab to the correct edit field if I turn browse mode off.  And if I hadn't been able to, I still should have been able to send a blank message with the reply below it by using the reply to group button.  I don't know what the problem is but the button may not work properly when activated from the keyboard.

It usually doesn't matter if I can send a reply from the web interface, but now and then, I've deleted a message I later want to reply to.

Gene,

I am suspecting that what you believe you did, and what you actually did, might be ever so slightly different.  If you have logged in to the Groups.io website, gone to the messages for a group, and hit the reply button, this should open up the reply area and hitting the Reply to Group button should send what you compose.

That being said, I'm in NVDA right now while composing this message and the reply composition area is not announced as an edit box. When I finally land in it it announces, "Section editable clickable, clickable."  I still haven't found the way to "quick jump" past all of the control buttons straight into this box.  I find it interesting that the Subject field does announce, "Subject, editable."  I'd think that this box would announce either, "Message text, editable," or "Reply, editable," but it doesn't.

Once I hit NVDA Key + Spacebar to switch back to browse mode I then cannot escape this edit box by tabbing, and that wasn't true earlier.  Now that I've been playing with this again I'm still stuck in the compose box and can't get out as I'd think I should.

Even though I'm not the most skilled screen reader user there are clearly accessibility issues with the Groups.io website and certain behaviors are particularly vexing.

I'm just curious as to what you actually did mostly because it didn't work and I can't even get myself out of this editing area "by conventional means."

As an aside, I updated to the Creators Update yesterday and when I just fired up NVDA 2017.1 to compose this message I got a massively long announcement regarding Narrator and the languages it's available in.  I found that more than a bit odd and, though it could be helpful, hope it's a one time shot.

Re: Replying to the list using the web site

I will also second Brian Gaff's observations about hating web forums systems, or at least this one, for screen reader users.  It is absolutely not screen reader friendly and even the way objects are being announced seems to change depending on where I've jumped and when.  I get a lot of "table" announcements when what appears on the screen would not be recognized as a table by anyone.

If this particular setup is at all characteristic of most of them I can absolutely see why the e-mail list interface is considered vastly preferable, at a minimum, and probably more like absolutely essential by a screen reader user.

I'd have to look at the create profile dialog again to see just how it is set up. Be sure it is set to manual and then, probably if you tab once more, you will be in something, I thing a combo box, where you set a trigger. You want it to only be triggered when you use read to end. Find that item, whatever it is exactly called. Then do the rest of the setup for the profile.

To set up a profile where you can do this and automatically have it done
you need to do the following.

Go into your browser whether it be mozilla fire fox etc. make sure it is
in focus.

Next Press the nvda key + ctrl key + the letter P

When the profile manager opens next tab to new it is a button press the
space bar on it. give it a name like mozilla fire fox with out
formatting then tab it will say some thing manual activation i could
have to check. Do not touch this one but arrow down to current
application it will say mozilla fire fox. Then tab down to the ok button
then press the enter key.

Next bring up document formatting with the ctrl key + nvda key + the
letter D.

Tab down to where it says reporting of headings list etc and uncheck
those boxes then tab to the ok button then press the enter key.

You might have to go back into your pro file or hopefully it is still in
focus locate the profile you set up then tab to the close button then
press the enter key.

If set correctly you should not hear link, heading list etc.

When you do it make sure you are in mozilla fire fox then bring up the
profile do your changes in document formatting then after done when back
in the pro file tab to close just as mentioned.

I am pretty sure you will get the idea and other profiles can be set up

What are the steps to reply to the list to a message using the web site? I deleted a message because I didn't think I had a reply but, on reflection, I did. I opened the message on the web site, pressed the reply button, wrote a message in the edit field, then I activated the reply to group button. I did this more than once and no message was sent to the list, at least I didn't see any when I downloaded mail from the list again.

Re: Test

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Freelists have always had this issue. Some years back I found out that it did not cope well with blacklisted email servers sending to it and greylisting servers receiving from it. In the former case your outgoing smtp can be on a list due to spambot activity. I do not know what lists freelists uses. On the current list I'd imagine since we got that message a few months back about all new people on lists we might run have to be verified due to spammers, I wonder if they too, now subscribe to some lists and get affected, or don't cope well with greylisting which from what I'm told is the tendency for an incoming server to reject the first attempt to send to it to ward off spambot outgoing email which is done fast with not test to see if its got anywhere to hopefully get as much out before it gets blocked by that isp.

Hi,
Very unusual for groups.io. It’s the NVDA addons list I’m having trouble with over at Freelists – it keeps randomly unsubscribing me. I resubscribed and sent a message last night which seems to have gone through but then not only did I get no replies, but no traffic from that list whatsoever. When I look at the archives this morning I find that my message isn’t even there. That group has unsubscribed me now about four times with absolutely no warning. Does anyone know what’s going on with that list?
Cheers.

Re: Thunderbird Settings

Ron Canazzi

Hi Andrea,

The easiest way to export setting from Thunderbird is to copy the entire data folder from one computer to another.  You locate this folder by opening the run dialogue and typing the following line which I will place on a separate line:

%appdata%

Then copy the Thunderbird folder and on the other computer, paste it into the same folder path by typing the above expression in the run dialogue and opening the data folder.

This will copy all mail and configurations, but will not copy the address book.  For that item, you must use the export feature from the address book itself and then use the import feature in the address book on the new computer using the exported file as the base for importation.

adverbum - Parchment

Anyone can clarify why this happens? Note that this is not specific to this game, but this only happens in Parchment (see <http://www.eblong.com/zarf/glulx/quixe/quixe/play-remote.html?story=stories/Advent.ulx.js>). That works properly...

Even more weirdness: Andrew Plotkin uses an older version of Parchment with no ARIA, and it works surprisingly well (compare <http://eblong.com/zarf/zweb/tangle/> and <http://iplayif.com/?story=http://eblong.com/zarf/ftp/Tangle.z5>.

Any thoughts?

Alexander, I'm working on Excel currently.  Being realistic, I'll say that should be available by the middle of the year, though likely sooner.

Robert, Thanks for the expression of interest.  We are keeping an eye on the interest in the audio of the "Basic Training for NVDA" as well as people who ask about Word like yourself, to ascertain the interest in the different formats.

Kind regards

Quentin.

It's not free, but after our "Basic Training for NVDA", we do have "Microsoft Word with NVDA" which is $30 Australian, which converts to around $23 USD, 18 Pounds UK, or 21 Euro.

It's available from: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/

The Basic Training for NVDA is available in Audio, Braille or electronic text.  At this stage the Microsoft Word with NVDA is only available in electronic text, depending on interest.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Can someone point me to a free series of podcasts or tutorials on using Microsoft Office 2016? I loved NV Access'es basic audio tutorials by the way!
