Citation management and NVDA

James AUSTIN

Hello everyone

Apologies for asking this on list, I really should have done the research myself, but I thought asking her may be quicker.

I am looking for a citation/reference manager that works with NVDA. Preferably, it should be free and open source, as well as provide support for BibTeX citations. For those of you who use, or have used Mac OS, I would like to know if there is anything similar to BibDesk. Also, I am not sure about the current state of accessibility with Zotero, so maybe this could be an option?

Any and all thoughts welcome.

Thank you

James

On a slow computer, I had slow performance when typing e-mails on a webmail site until I turned check for spelling errors off in Firefox.  This sounds as though it may be an analogous situation.

Hello kelby,

I experienced something like this in Outlook 2016.  The problem came from
having spelling checked as I typed.  In outlook 2016, I went to alt+f,
options, e-mail, editor options, and unchecked "check spelling as you type".

What I was experiencing was as I typed, the new e-mail message became less
responsive for arrow keys, and movement in general.  This happened in JAWS
18.  Spelling errors, and perhaps web links, caused the whole writing
process to become slower and slower.

Hi all,

I notice that if I use the review cursor commands in Microsoft Word
documents, there's about a half second lag. My arrows work fine, but
my girlfriend has so much lag that navigating documents (even with
just the arrow keys) is maddeningly frustrating. I'm wondering if
anyone has experienced this and knows of a good way to fix it. We both
run pretty modern Dell laptops (hers an i5, mine an i7) and they both
run very well besides that. I don't have a copy of JAWS, but hers
doesn't experience the same lag with the arrow keys, so it seems to be
something specific to NVDA. My guess is that a particular setting is
causing this, but I'm not sure which. I've looked through document
formatting settings and turned off a lot of the unneeded stuff, and
also tried turning off formatting information. Suggestions are welcome.

Re: Windows 10 App Essentials confusion

It depends on whether you have save on exit set as the NVDA behavior.  Save on exit is the default and I strongly believe it shouldn't be but it is.  If you change a setting in NVDA, it will be saved on exit.

Hi,

Because of the way add-on saves settings, you need to press Control+NvDA+C to save settings for changes to take effect (I’ll write a note about that in 17.03.1 release notes).

Joseph

This is a bug of some sort in the update feature of this app.  Any changes you make to that dialogue are not saved.  I set it to stable and next day it came up with this new version thing again and I checked and it had reverted to the dev channel.  Also, I unchecked the automatically check for updates yesterday, and this morning I again got that pesky new version available.  I checked, and sure enough, not only was the update channel set back to dev, but the check for updates box was checked once again.  Just ignore this for now and I'm sure a fix will be out soon.

Just in relation to the difficulty reading the text mesage is there a way on your phone of copying and pasting the information into an email and sending it to your self for review on a PC?

If using an iPhone you can use the last phrase copied to the pasteboard function- quadruple triple tap and then you can just use the rota to paste it into an email as usual. I have done this several times when I have wanted more permanent records of texts.

then of course NVDA could review the text in detail for you.

I am afraid I am not sure how to do this on other phones though it might be worth looking at context menus in Android.

It also says in the help that after doing this you will be asked to change your password and agree to use an old insecure email client, but I never get that far. Instead it just comes up with an unauthorised access message and sends you an email with a link back to another page to get another code again.

Its like Groundhog day.
They seem to be deliberately suggesting that all who have not changed their password do so but need the code to verify its really you. I can only deduce that its either that the field is the wrong one or the code read by my dumb phone is incomplete. Sadly the phone has no way to step through the characters in the message it just says fy8d or whatever its is.

Are you saying you can actually send email through yahoo after that message?

I can't It still receives of course but not send.

Brian,

I'm gathering you're referring to the e-mail message from Yahoo entitled, "REMINDER: Secure Your Yahoo Account," though given the amount of haranguing they've been doing after the announced-years-later password breach it could be another.

I could, and did, ignore that reminder because essentially it's a solicitation to turn on 2-step verification which I have no desire to do (and don't use it for accessing Gmail via Thunderbird, WLM 2012, and Outlook 2010, either, for which I use IMAP access, not POP).

I haven't gotten anything that requires a code be sent to a mobile phone, though, as part of a verification process.

Re: NVDA Web Browser Problem

You should have some sort of reversion method.  It isn't just screen-reader access that may be affected by bad installations.  That's what we are talking about now but that isn't the only problem that may occur.  Microsoft itself says that one of the reasons it made System Restore a feature of Windows is because of problems that may result from a bad uninstallation.

I don't want to give the impression that uninstalling programs causes problems a lot of the time.
But it appears to cause problems enough that Microsoft thought it a good idea to have a feature like System Restore.

This illustrates my point. The phrase "stuck with Math Player" sounds as
though it is a meaningful imposition to have it. It takes up very little
room and does nothing when not being used.
As I said, the presumption that programs should reflexively and routinely
be
uninstalled is one that should be reexamined.

When I was having the problem, NVDA could not access Firefox or Internet
Explorer. Fortunately, everything is now running fine once MathPlayer
was
re-installed.

It looks Like I am stuck with MathPlayer.

Folks,

Several weeks ago, my NVDA (version 16.4) was unable to access Firefox
(51.?). When I opened a webpage, the arrow keys just said unknown when
I
used them. I uninstalled NVDA and Firefox and re-installed both. I am
now
on NVDA 17.1), and I have the same issue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Look in nvda preferences menu there is a entry in there for app essentials

Windows 10 App Essentials confusion

Chris Mullins

                Hi

I am rather confused about the update feature of W10AE.  First of all I can’t find an update button associated with the app entry for version 17.03 in the manage add-ons dialog.  I activated the help button which took me to the download page from where I downloaded the stable version 17.03A.  I then checked it appeared in the manage add-ons dialog and it was running normally.  A few moments later a dialog appeared saying there was a new update of W10AE available, would I like to install it.  I replied yes and it installed.  On checking the Manage add-ons dialog again, it showed the version as 2000225DEV was installed

I have never knowing installed any development versions, so I don’t understand why it has suddenly started doing this.  Advice appreciated.

Cheers

Chris .

You are assuming this has something to do with NVDA.  NVDA is only responsible for it self.  These are separate programs.  As I said before, I see no reason to uninstall programs in general, though I do uninstall some.  But I make sure I have a way to revert the system if I do, such as system restore.  Others may prefer other programs or methods such as working with images.  But especially in the case of those who don't have a reversion system or are unjustifiably frightened of System Restore and won't use it, I think it's a bad idea to uninstall programs.  yThere are cases where people install a lot of programs because they are experimenters or curious about programs.  In that case, uninstalling programs makes sense.  But it is very important to have a reversion system available in that case, such as system restore or disk images or similar reversion means.

Its not the nvda's problem but the makers of the third party software who do not put windows back exactly how it was after the uninstall. Its not uncommon for Microsoft Office demos, certain theird party office suites and mathml to fail to put back or re register dlls they mess with. If that dll is one that is used in accessibility it will only be noticed by screenreaders. Normal users would probably be totally unaware of it.

do other addons check for update automaticly or checking for update is
special for only this one?

Subject: [nvda] Important Message For Joseph - Serious Security Flaw
Identified In the Windows 10 App Essentials Add-On

Hello,

I believe I have identified a serious security flaw in the Windows 10 App
Essentials add-on for NVDA. The add-on should never check for updates, or
present the dialog asking if the user would like to update the add-on while
NVDA is running on the log on and other secure screens.
I know that NVDA does warn if add-ons are found while copying the
configuration to the system profile, but I feel that this warning cannot be
relied upon to prevent serious security issues, such as the one described
above. I cannot be the only user who allows some add-ons, such as speech
synthesizers and other low-risk add-ons on the secure desktop intentionally
for convenience. I feel that this should be addressed by preventing the
Windows 10 App Essentials add-on from displaying update messages on secure
screens, just in case it ends up in that configuration.

Also, NVDA should never display any add-on help entries in the NVDA help
menu when running on secure screens, in the same way that custom preferences
menu entries are hidden. I.E. if the NoBeepsSpeechMode add-on is installed
in the system configuration, its help menu entry is displayed in the NVDA
help menu on secure screens.
