Re: MsExcel accessibility functions

Quentin Christensen

Hi Simon,

This is a good idea.  At this stage, I don't have a direct keystroke for you.  The two options I can think of, are:

If you want to read formulas in a number of cells, press CONTROL+` (CONTROL+grav), which toggles between displaying cell values, and displaying cell formulas.  While it doesn't announce anything when you press it (I did just file an issue to have it read out the cell again - https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7043) you could then read the current line with NVDA+up arrow (laptop: NVDA+l) to read.  This doesn't go into edit mode.

Alternatively, you could press F2 to go into edit mode, which reads the formula, you can then press ESCAPE to ensure you don't save any changes you accidentally make to the formula.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi, a very useful function on Jaws is, while operating Excel spreadsheets:

1.       beeing able to check the formula in the active cell with the voice without editing it. Practically, one uses the « ins+F2 » shortcut to get Jaws reading it.

2.             Being able to get the color information of the background or the text in any active cell. «With Jaws, the « ins+F5 » shortcut gives the background info color, whereas the « ins+f » shortcut gives the font color.

Would be nice if NVDA entails these features.

Best regards and sorry my mistakes (I’m a French speaking guy !

Re: Looking for a function similar to the jaws text analyzer

Hi Domingos,

You have an excellent point there. I am pasting the text about the text analyzer
from the freedomscientific website.
Source:
http://doccenter.freedomscientific.com/doccenter/doccenter/rs25c51746a0cc/2012-0

Text Analyzer
When editing a document using speech only, inconsistencies such as unmatched
parentheses, unintentional format changes, extra whitespace, and stray or
unspaced punctuation can often be missed. The Text Analyzer feature is a tool
that notifies you of these errors in your document by using a spoken message or
WAV file. You can configure JAWS to announce discrepancies by count, by
description, or by sound while proofreading the document by line, sentence,
paragraph, or Say All command. Braille users will benefit from this since a
sound can be emitted before the user has time to read the entire line looking
for errors.
Text Analyzer Modes
The Text Analyzer has the following four modes which you can get to by pressing
INSERT+V. Type the word "text analyzer" in the search edit box.
. Indicate with sound - JAWS will play an audible sound when the cursor moves to
a line where an inconsistency is found. This works when scrolling up and down
through text or when using SayAll mode.
. Speak count - JAWS will speak the number of inconsistencies found on each
line.
. Describe inconsistencies - JAWS will announce the type and location of any
inconsistencies found on each line of the document. This is the most descriptive
of the different Text Analyzer modes.
. Off - Text Analyzer is off and no inconsistency information will be spoken.
NOTE: You can also press ALT+WINDOWS KEY+I at any time to have Text Analyzer
move the cursor to the next inconsistency. This can be done even when Text
Analyzer is turned off, and is an easy to quickly find potential errors in your
document.

This sounds like things could be bouncing from the groups.io end, but I'm not sure.  I did drop a quick message to support just so they can check to see if something might be "burping" on the groups.io end.

The nature of that message sounds, to me, like the message was sent but is being bounced back from groups.io rather than failing at the sending end.

I'm not sure what setting you may have in mind.  Are you sure the new address is working properly?  Have you tried sending a message to it from the old address?  Is it received?  Can you send a message, also, from the new address to the current address you are using?  Before proceeding further, we should be sure that the new address is working.  I believe I can, as moderator, change your address if necessary but to do so without knowing if it works may mean that you would stop receiving mail from the list and perhaps get a bouncing message.

I'm using thunderbird and this is happening  no matter what e mail address I had tryed to send a message, but weirdly, it's just happening for the last two hours and I cant say for sure if may be I changed some setting.

it's driving me crazy.

Re: NVDA: HELP AND INFORMATION

Quentin Christensen

Hi Christo,

Everyone else has given some great information.  I must admit, firstly, I haven't looked much at Access lately.  What I would say though, is if you find any issues, we would love to hear about them, as then it will prompt us to look at them and endeavour to get them resolved.  The best place to report issues is on our issue tracker: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues

I am writing official training material for using NVDA.  So far, we have "Basic Training for NVDA", which, despite the name, actually goes from very early concepts, through to fairly advanced use of the screenreader.  As noted elsewhere in this thread, that does including using the ribbon, which is indeed a useful skill to have when working in Microsoft Office.  We also have "Microsoft Word with NVDA" and I am currently working on "Microsoft Excel with PowerPoint".  They are all (well, not Excel yet) available here: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/

Now, for keystrokes for Office, here are a few links from Microsoft:

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi List

To start with, please allow me to give a little background.

The Institute for the Blind in Worcester (South Africa) changed it's name to Kaleidoscope. Our college, Kaleidoscope Training College, currently has three basic courses, Call Centre NQF Level 3, Marketing NQF Level 4 and End User Computer NQF Level 3. My plea for help and information has to do with the End User Computer training.

As part of this course we are required to train blind, and parcially sighted students, to use MS PowerPoint 2010 and MS Access 2010. I have a few questions.

1. Are the above-mentioned applications in any way useable with NVDA?
2. If compatible with NVDA, are there any shortcuts available?
3. Does anybody know about manuals, aimed at blind users, available for these applications.

A second matter:

We are also required to train these students in the use of Outlook 2010. Would you perhaps be able to provide us with an extensive list of ALT-sequence keys for this program?

I would appreciate it greatly if anybody could assist us in this matter.

Re: disable beeping in NVDA

Gene New Zealand <hurrikennyandopo@...>

Hi Peter

if you check under the menu that is called Object Presentation after you have gone into it check the following areas there.

these are progress bar out put make sure beeps is not selected. There is a shortcut to turn it off it is the NVDA key + U. It will toggle between the different settings. for example speak and beep, beep, and off.

the next one under it should be unchecked as well this is called Report background progress bars. You will probably find it is that one that is doing it.

The only other place i can think of but you would not be using is under the nvda key + letter S. will go between off, beeps and speak. So you would have yours set to speak so really no need to check here.

The first result returned by my Google search is https://www.palemoon.org/

Since the original question was about the differences between palemoon and
firefox, I'm pretty sure this is what's being discussed.

I hope that helps,

Antony.

Hello all,

PaleMoon is not accessible, because they simply stripped it of all
accessibility functions to make it lighter...

Thanks devs, that's definitely the way to go to make inclusive
programmes (sarcastic grin).

Hi

I downloaded a copy of it this morning. it was not usable by NVDA.
Because it was not accessible i then uninstalled it from my pc on
windows 10. When the computer rebooted actually it would only go as far
as the log on screen but no further. it basically when uninstalled and
the computer rebooted crashed the computer i am using now and i had to
reinstall windows all together. I could not even restore it back to a
earlier version or even reset it.

I have only got it back on line this mornig and in the process of
putting some programs on it.

DO NOT ToUCh AT ALL.

I do not know what it done but my wife had to reload windows all
together.
