Re: Object Location Tones 20.09, penultimate add-on release #addonrelease

Hi,

I’m very close to finishing my undergraduate degree and am planning to apply to graduate school. Based on conversations with people, graduate education is more difficult and will take a lot of my time. Because I spend quite a lot of time working on NVDA and add-ons, I knew that I have to give it up if I’m to succeed in education. Such is life.

Cheers,

Joseph

Joseph,

Actually I didn't catchup with all the conversations since sometime hence asking, why are you stepping back from NVDA world and community?

I'm sorry if my question seems irrelevant.

Hi,

There are replacements such as Audio Themes. Also, the NVDA pull request associated with it (for NVDA issue 2559), while useful, wasn’t really ready. Besides, it has become clear to me that in order to prepare for the next stage in my life (graduate school), I need to let go of NVDA, and letting go of add-ons that are effectively end of life is just one stage of this process (I thought about this decision for a long time). I know that we have people who can take good care of this add-on in the future.

Cheers,

Few questions regarding the Place Markers add-on

Amir

Folks, having used the Place Markers feature in JAWS for a long time, I'd like to know if the Place Markers add-on for NVDA can provide an equal experience. Specifically:
1. Is it possible to create a place marker for a page and expect it to work on all pages belonging to that domain? For instance, I download a lot of podcasts and audio files from npr.org. With JAWS I've created a place marker for the Download link on one page and, via a check box, have set it up in a way that it works on all pages belonging to npr.org.
2. Crucially, can place markers be anchored to one or more words on a page so that they can always move us to the proper/expected location regardless of any modifications on that page? Again JAWS can do it by asking for a word or phrase to which a place marker should be anchored. Like the first one, this is also optional.

Best,
Amir

I expect it’ll be every 24 hours just like NVDA’s own update check interval.

Speaking of addon updater. Once it's intigrated into NVDA, I woulder. Would it be possible to set how frequently it checks for updates? Ie realtime, once every hour, once every two hours, four hours, and so on?

Just a thought.

Hi all,

Originally I planned to release version 20.09 of various add-ons next week. However in order to spend more time studying and to better process recent tragedies in United States and elsewhere (shootings, floods, COVID-19 updates), I’ll be releasing these updates tonight (August 27th to be exact). The new updates include:

  • Add-on Updater: effective with this update, there will be no more update checks for Image Describer add-on.
  • Control Usage Assistant: localization updates.
  • Enhanced Touch Gestures: coordinate announcement beep and temporary touch passthrough features are gone.
  • GoldWave: localization updates.
  • Object Location Tones: see an earlier message.
  • Resource Monitor: system uptime will be announced as x days, x hours, x minutes, x seconds.
  • StationPlaylist: mandatory update, start of next long-term support period (until April 2021), various changes for encoders support, table navigation commands are now available from places in Studio other than playlist viewer.
  • Windows 10 App Essentials: the workaround in place for Version 20H2 is gone as Microsoft released a fix.

As always, these updates can be found via Add-on Updater and from community add-ons website.

Note: development snapshots for StationPlaylist and Windows 10 App Essentials will be suspended effective tonight until further notice.

Another reminder: we are indeed living in an unpredictable moment. I therefore urge you all to keep yourself and others safe and healthy. For people impacted by recent tragedies and short-term events to come, we are here for you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Object Location Tones 20.09, penultimate add-on release #addonrelease

Hi all,

Object Location Tones 20.09 will show up in about an hour or so from now. This version includes code edits based on Flake8 lint tool recommendations.

IMPORTANT: Object Location Tones add-on will be discontinued by end of 2020. As much as I wish to develop this add-on further, the time for this add-on’s usefulness has passed, and I would like to lighten my NVDA work in preparation for next stage in life. As the add-on is released under GNU General Public License, anyone is welcome to study, modify, and share their edits. The repo can be found at:

https://github.com/josephsl/objlocationtones

The last version of this add-on from me is planned for early next year (likely in January 2021).

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: NVDA read-to-end

George McCoy

Let me say at the outset, I usually hybernate my computer when I'm through with it for the day. When I have this issue, running with add-ons disabled does not help.  I even completely uninstalled NvDA. by 'completely' I mean I also removed appData\roaming\nvda and all its subdirectories. When I reinstalled NvDA, the issue was not resolved.  I shut down the computer and rebooted several times. No joy. I chose 'restart' several times. No joy.  Then, one morning when I brought the system out of hybernation, everything worked properly.

I had trouble with read to end with Notetab ++, Thunderbird v 68, Firefox and Brave browsers.

I'll save the log next time it happens.

No, we haven't changed anything from our end, you should be able to press NVDA+A (Laptop keyboard layout) or NVDA+down arrow (desktop keyboard layout) to say all, in a document, a web page or an email.

Now as for what is happening, as Gene mentioned, a log would help, ideally at Debug level, and ideally with add-ons disabled (do you have any add-ons?)

Looking through our issues I found: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/10852 about say all in Firefox or Wordpad which was resolved by the user running the COM registration fixing tool.  To do that, press NVDA+N, then press T for tools, then down arrow to "Run COM registration fixing tool" and press ENTER.

There are a handful of other closed issues which were either from using broken add-ons, or illegal ones, or other things which have been fixed and merged in NVDA 2019.3 and earlier.

One which is still open is https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/4119 which is an issue in Libre Office at least.  Last time I looked at this issue, the workaround I found which resolved it, was when you open a document in Libre Office, press CONTROL+END to jump to the very bottom of the document, then CONTROL+HOME to come back to the top, then say all should work.

I just tested and it looks like that issue is still present in Libre Office 6.3.0.4 using the latest NVDA alpha.  That isn't isn't in WordPad to my knowledge however.  As far as I know, that is caused by a bug in Libre Office and has pretty much always been there.

I just update to Libre Office 7.0.0 and it still behaves the same.

Quentin.

I just tested this and it beeps when speak typed characters is on or off. It does it when speak words is on or off as well, so the screen-reader could be silent and it would still beep.

It should still beep when typing a lowercase letter with caps lock on - so if you have double pressed the caps lock key and caps lock is on. If you then press SHIFT and type a letter (which will come out lowercase) NVDA will beep.

In NVDA'S speech settings there is an option "Beep for capitals". With that on whenever you arrow to a capital or type a capital letter, NVDA will beep, however it only does this when reading the letter, so it only reads when typing, if speak typed characters is enabled.

Do you have any other add-ons installed?  Note that when you uninstalled / reinstalled NVDA it doesn't delete the %appdata%\nvda folder, so any add-ons etc you had previously would still be there (and any problems caused by them)..  If you press NVDA+Q then down arrow to "restart with add-ons disabled" it should ignore any add-ons when it restarts.

I am dealing with a difficult situation. I just installed to the latest version of NVDA. This was an update from a much earlier version, as I delayed updating since there was not a compatible version of the dictation bridge at the time.

my vocalizer plug-in stopped working. I went to the tiflotechnia website to download the latest version of the plug-in, which after I installed it, said it was not compatible. I then completely removed the vocalizer plugging along with the synthesizers.

When I was trying to use the screen reader with e speak, it randomly would crash. I would go into fire fox, type in a search, the results would load and I would start trying to navigate through the headings and we get no response. I would press alt tab, and no response.

I then uninstalled the screen reader bygoing into the settings, under applications, and clicking uninstall. I assume that activates the same uninstall file in the program files folder. At this point I was using narrator.

I restarted the computer,  And ran the installer again. When the installation was complete, I was having the same issues. I am not past this point now. Whenever I try to run NVDA, It quickly goes silent after a simple task like bringing up the run dialogue and attempting to type something in. The speech becomes unresponsive, though I can still tab around the applications and open the start menu.
