Re: google chrome version 81

The problem is that pdf is more than a file.

Its an image format, a archive, a document.

A lot of manuals come in it.

At home we save archives of photos and scanned images in it.

Many scanners and such use it as it is a commen format.

So its not going away any time soon.

A properly designed pdf should just work.

But if it doesn't you can use something like codex to convert any pdf into something that can be used freely.

Now it would be nice if all manuals and stuff the blind need to read from books to everything else were in actual html code.

Pdfs are like a zip file for images and documents.

Now what needs to happen is that if a pdf is supposed to be for us blind people to read there needs to be something that stops it being compiled if its not accessible.

But there are pdf documents that we don't need to read as such.

As I said a lot of scanners and such use pdf generally.

Right now adobe controls all this pdf cloud and other things.

I do think there needs to be something for us users to edit, and view pdfs, handle forms etc and make things accessible and working.

Most of the time I am converting a pdf into something else though an accessibly done pdf can be read and its fine.

To be honest if pdfs did go, it would be back to image files.

The good news is that a lot of pdfs for a lot of things like manuals and the like were created from word documents.

As for flash, it and shockwave are being replaced by air.

The fact shockwave is gone on the web doesn't mean its gone.

Still a lot of people write in it and standalone shockwave and flash are used.

And web is not fully accessible at all times either.

It would be nice to just kill all custom controls and interfaces but no one would like that.

Flash is dieing because of security and the fact adobe can't be bothered maintaining it now html5 can cover its functions.

Pdfs well the tools are out there, but people have to use all of them.

Tip: If you have not configured NVDA to speak typed characters or words but want to hear typed text in passwords, you may create a configuration profile to enable the speaking of typed characters and passwords, and assign it to a gesture or create a trigger to enable it automatically in certain situations. For convenience, NVDA will ask if you want to create a dedicated profile when the add-on is installed.

Thanks, Brian. I’m just not technically savvy enough to know what is extra, or what is already understood in the initial report about the status bar etc. So thank you.

Mary, that had not been mentioned specifically.  I just went in to the Thunderbird Bug that Shaun Everiss filed in Bugzilla, and added the following, based on your input:

Even when the Thunderbird window does not have active focus, the status bar has been disabled, and NVDA is on, NVDA is still reporting when messages are being downloaded, which was not occurring in the past.

I do not know whether the ARIA fix for the status bar is related to this, but wanted to note the behavior for developers.

Additional details about what Thunderbird is speaking, and shouldn't be speaking or didn't speak before, other than what has been identified already is valuable information.  If others have information like this it's fine to offer it here and, if you can and have Bugzilla account, append a comment to the previously noted bug.  It's information the developers need.

When the topic of Thunderbird speaking too much came up, someone was wondering about whether it would do that if the Thunderbird window did not have focus. I can attest to the fact that if Thunderbird does not have focus, it will still tell you when messages are being downloaded. This is with the status bar not checked. I have no idea if that eventuality is covered by what has been talked about regarding the area role. I’m just putting it here in case it’s important, and if not, if it’s already been covered, I’m sorry.

Re: Reading messages list in Mozilla Thunderbird

Marie,

Here are the Thunderbird Columns, as currently ordered on my machine, and they are not in the default order, along with whether they are ON (displayed) or OFF (hidden):
Read  ON
Thread ON
Starred ON
Attachment ON
From ON (AKA Sender)
Subject ON - and not able to be turned off
Recipient OFF (AKA To)
Correspondents ON
Junk Status OFF
Received OFF  (Date Received)
Date ON  (Date Sent, most often this and Received are the same)
All of the columns after Date are OFF
Status
Size
Tag
Account
Priority
Unread
Total
Location
Order Received

When you have opened Options, the above column list is followed by the controls:
Restore Column Order  (to Thunderbird Default Order)
Apply Columns To (which I have never used, but it allows you to apply your settings above to other folders in Thunderbird)

Re: Thunderbird issue update (comments should be sent to GitHub): changes to Thunderbird is responsible for annoying status bar announcements

Well, according to the last bug update, someone identified the issue, and now another person has sighted the right wcag guideline so they acknowledged the issue.

This person is asking the guy that put out last nights note if he will take the job on fixing it, so, its possible that we could see a fix within the next week or so, who knows.

The bug has been fixed, now they need  to assign someone to handle the issue of fixing it.

I'd imagine that once that has been done, we can move to wards a solution.

The reason and solution have allready been implemented at least on paper so to speak and the right articles sighted on it.

So I shouldn't think it will take that much longer to fix and upload a fresh build.

I also got another message saying that there are not enough nvda users testing daily builds.

Now for obvious reasons if you guys listened to mine and jean's conversations about what happened the last time I tested unstable builds of anything on a single machine, I would feel unsafe testing nightly builds of everything especially since I don't have a system that I can dedicate to software testing as such, certainly not a system I could dedicate to actual testing, at least not one with adiquit power, something I could get up, build, test, and if it screws reformat and rebuild again.

Thats not saying that I won't try to get a system that I can do that to, but that may have to be in the future.

And while I do have virtual machine software, I don't have enough space to host more than 1 virtual machine, and certainly I don't have the space to host an instance of a machine for a long time longer than 24-48 hours, pluss a windows vertual on my system still has a few issues.

I don't have a licence to put on my vm so unless I either get an alegal one or search round for my win7 key for another system I have about so I can upgrade it then who knows.

I don't want to transpose my ms account licence of win10 over to  a test unit and it gets all kinds of complicated.

I do have some room for a test box, and well who knows.

I'm ready to switchback to MS mail due to this annoyance of NVDA reading everything being displayed on Thunderbird's mail status bar.

Couldn't the NVDA Mozilla apps enhancement add-on include some sort of fix to stop this until Mozilla gets around to removing the tag causing the problem?

Hello NVDA users,

As requested by moderators, please direct further comments to GitHub issue:

A few minutes ago one of the NVDA code contributors tweeted that annoying status bar announcement issue is caused by changes made to Thunderbird itself. In short, Thunderbird placed a tag on its status bar that will cause NVDA to announce messages continuously (technical: ARIA role status was used for status bar).

Unless it is justified that NVDA should resolve this issue on its own, this issue is something Thunderbird developers should resolve.

An odd subject but not necessarily true. I don't really know how to explain this one.

This is an electron app by the way so I don't really know if this is a chrome thing or not.

steps

  1. download stkp you do not need an account, just put a nick name in the settings if you want.
  1. Go to the add tabs option at. the bottom and click it.
  1. Add a tab such as http://simbrief.net or the active sky. The second one won't work unless you have prepared and active sky (as) running.

results

Notice that links don't work, check boxes can't be checked and edit fields can't be typed into, only in that particular applet. The rest of the links in the app work. The developer is a bit stumped as to why this is not working. If someone can tell me what to say to him, or can contact him on their discord which can be found in the dash board, please let me know. He wants to make the app accessible but does not know what he is doing. He has nvda but has not even I don't think tired to fix this. It is not on his list to fix now, but it will be soon.

Eilana,

If you don't have the Thunderbird add-on, Quick Folder Key Navigation, installed I suggest you get that, too.  Instructions follow.

IMPORTANT:  For those using Thunderbird with a screen reader I strongly suggest installing the Quick Folder Key Navigation extension.  You will only need to install this extension once for any instance of Thunderbird you might be using.  This allows you to jump from folder in the folder tree using first letter navigation to move between them.  Without it, this does not always work.   You will only need to install this extension once for any instance of Thunderbird you might be using.  If you are using JAWS or NVDA, searching for this add on within Thunderbird is quite simple:

·         Activate the Tools Menu (ALT+T), add-ons option (followed by A) and tab 3 times, at which point you should be on the Extensions Pane.  If you happen to land on any other pane then use Down Arrow (or Up Arrow) until you hear Extensions.

·         Tab 2 times, which lands you in the search all add-ons edit box.

·         Then type in Quick Folder Key Navigation, hit enter, and wait a few seconds for the search to complete.

·         Tab 5 times more gain focus on the list of results.  Then hit Down Arrow to start navigating the list.  Quick Folder Key Navigation should be the first result.

·         Tab 2 times to land on the Install button then hit enter.

·         After the install completes you need to exit Thunderbird and start it up again for this extension to become active

Hi.  I am no expert and based on the log output, it would seem this is on thunderbird end. Have a few theories to test but will file a bug with thunderbird.  This is completely separate than the ARIA-role-status for the status bar which is what is causing all the extra verbosity.

Welcome to using a beta but this is the point isn't it?

Shall see what I can do.

Mr. Moore, are you a developer for Thunderbird?  Just asking based on your "poke/fix" comment.

Even if you're not, if you beta test and report issues, not being able to use the Mozilla Apps Enhancement method to move columns is a big break from many past versions of Thunderbird, and likely the issue is on their end.

The following presumes you have already installed the previously noted Mozilla Apps Enhancements add on, have restarted NVDA, and have Thunderbird up and running with focus on the Thunderbird window.
1. Hit NVDA+H.  A dialog entitled, Manage columns, appears.  That dialog is composed of a list of the columns in the order they are currently being displayed from left to right, with the leftmost column at the top of the list.
2.  The next thing I suggest you do, but this step is optional, is to hit ALT+O, which will cause the list of Thunderbird columns, in Thunderbird itself, to be displayed with a checkbox in front of those columns you wish to have displayed, and nothing (unchecked) for those you want to hide.  It's worth down arrowing through that column list and deciding if there are any currently checked (displayed) columns you'd like to hide, and uncheck those, and vice versa.  Hitting ESC closes the Thunderbird column selection process and throws you back to the Mozilla Apps Enhancements dialog.
3.  Back in the dialog column list, gain focus on the column that you would like to move.  If you want it to be to the left of where it is (and that means it would be announced first), then hit ALT+U to move it up by one position.  Repeat the ALT+U as many times as necessary to get it where you want it.  If you want this column to be announced later than it currently is (moving it to the right/down the list), hit ALT+D as many times as necessary to get it where you want it relative to other columns.
4.  Review your column order by going to the top of the list and down arrowing through it so you know what the "First announced to last announced" order is.  If you find a mistake, then repeat step 3, moving the column or columns to where you want them.
5. Navigate to the Close button for the dialog and activate it.  You're done.

Hello

I hope you're all well during this challenging time.

The problem I have with Mozilla Thunderbird with NVDA is that when navigating with the arrow keys in messages list, is the subject is read first  by NVDA. I was wondering if there is a way to change settings  so NVDA will read 1st the sender name.

thanks in advance
