portable copy with 2019.3.1

Brian Moore

Hi all. I sent this before but not sure if it went through so sorry it it happened twice.

This seems to be new. I Always keep a portable copy of NVDA on a usb thumb drive that I carry around.  Yesterday, deleted the old one and made a portable copy of my currently running 2019.3.1 It worked but for the first time, none of the addons I have installed came with it.  There was a portable configuration but it was default settings with no addons.

Anyone else seen this?

nvda and accessing svg element on web

William Wong

Hello,

I would like to know if any one expert in html or something related to that. as well as knowing how nvda works.

If the webpage has used svg to display some image, pressing tab in the browser will never jump onto the element.

It seemed that even adding aria role img and svg label, still cannot jump onto it by keyboard tab.

I have to report an accessibility issue to a website, but I donot know how to make this work.

Is not able to tab onto svg element a nvda issue? a general issue of screen reader? or any trick that can resolve it?

Not sure if this is proper to raise up here.

Thanks,

William

The original message doesn’t say it is second hand.  Ifr a later one does, I don’t recall that.

It is very unlikely that if it were, that someone would have turned these settings off.  Why would a sighted user even be aware of them?

Additionally, as you will see in a later message, it is stated that unknown is spoken.  Exactly what was goind on needed to be clarified.  If the accessibility setting was the problem, unknown wouldn’t have been spoken.  Nothing would have been.  I tried disabling accessibility in Firefox awhile ago to see what would happen and that was what happened.  Nothing, literally nothing read except the title bar.

My interest was to help have the most likely solutions tried first to save time and work.

Hi Mallard,

For both Firefox and Chrome, there is a checkbox under settings that
says: "prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser." This
should be unchecked. I thought it would be unchecked by default, but
apparently, your friend's system had this item checked by default.  This
would in effect render Firefox and Chrome inaccessible and useless to
screen readers.

The easiest way to undo this damage is to have sighted help.  It's a
simple matter of clicking tools, options, and unchecking this checkbox.

Lacking that, I believe there is something you can type at the command
prompt from the edit box for search/addresses. You would have to do this
all in the blind, so it wouldn't be easy.  I will look for the proper
things to  type in the blind, but as of now, I seem to have misplaced
the information.
Maybe someone else on list will have that information.

Re: google chrome version 81

A lot of stuff is delayed.

Bar skype and a few codec updates nothing has been released due to this damn virus.

Usually by now I have at least a couple releases of my display drivers for the month but nothing.

Re: Serious issue with NVDA not reading menus and totally silent in Firefox and Chrome

Actually hp aint that bad.

The website has drivers and such, but yeah by default there is bloatware.

Firstly remove all the bloated apps from the store.

2.  reformat and clean all partitions on all drives and recreate them.

On my system I was able to blits the recovery and extend it since it was on my second drive.

The stuff on hp's site actually is interesting.

It may come bloated but on the website, bar the support and a few other utilities the bloatware doesn't make it to the site, so if you reformat and get the latest stuff that won't exist anymore.

Just make sure you.

1.  don't install any update enhancer because that could screw things.

2.  don't use their audio switch app.

and 3.  before you do anything some of them have offers for the cloud, take those if you can.

I had the same on my workstation and  I just reformat and there was no bloat.

You can't get the bloat back again and the stuff on the hp website is quite clean.

The only things hp holds are the utilities, diagnostics, and drivers and thats it.

Other manufacturers have loads more.

Look at my asus board for example.

Lol, you-re so right about hp and bloatware and all!

We solved it, and while we were at it, my husband cleaned up her computer via Teamviewer, and now NVDA flies on it, and reads everyting eprfectly.

In addition, I-d like to thank Brian once more for the tutorial on using ribbons in Windows 10. I explained my friend how to handle them based on that tutorial, and now she-s happy about those as well.

Ciao, nd again ghanks to all that responded offering solutions.

Ciao,

Yeah--the other thing is that HP does some weird stuff w/its keyboard

really needs some work to get it aligned w/the needs of screen reader
users.

The other thing, Alli, is that you might want to see if Narrator works
similarly.

Re: google chrome version 81

Since I have Version 80.0.3987.132 and when I did that check I began an automatic update, resulting in Version 80.0.3987.149, it's definitely not here yet.

A web  search on Chrome 81 delayed turns up a number of articles, including:

and

Google halts Chrome browser and Chrome OS releases due to coronavirus outbreak
among others.   Utterly unsurprising and I expect that all sorts of release delays will be announced in the coming days.

Hello,

When using TortoiseSVN to commit, after the commit finishes a list view is displayed reporting items which were committed. Items as such are being announced but with no text, you hear just "selected". Following is the NVDA log excerpt:

Thanks for your message.  My point may not have been clear.  I was just saying that it would have been good to specify the start menu in the subject line.  Some people may have thought that many menus weren’t read and that may have led to confusion about the browser problem.  If my message seemed to be critical in a negative way or to be saying morethan that, that wasn’t my intent.

Thanks very much.   It's always nice to have a "universally applicable" option for something like this when needed.

Yes. Alternatively, this should work for both:

import comtypes,ctypes;p=comtypes.typeinfo.LoadTypeLibEx(r"c:\windows\syswow64\oleacc.dll");ctypes.windll.oleaut32.RegisterTypeLib(p, u"c:\\windows\\syswow64\\oleacc.dll", None)

Tyler,

I am just trying to be absolutely sure that the only difference between that command for pre-2019.3 versions of NVDA and 2019.3 forward is the presence of the character 'u' for all versions prior to 2019.3?   I see "RegisterTypeLib(p,ur" for pre-2019.3 and "RegisterTypeLib(p,r" for 2019.3 and later.  Full import commands are quoted below, but I wanted to stick with focused snippets here.

Old NVDA, Pre 2019.3
import comtypes,ctypes;p=comtypes.typeinfo.LoadTypeLibEx(r"c:\windows\syswow64\oleacc.dll");ctypes.windll.oleaut32.RegisterTypeLib(p,ur"c:\windows\syswow64\oleacc.dll", None)

Current NVDA 2019.3 onward
import comtypes,ctypes;p=comtypes.typeinfo.LoadTypeLibEx(r"c:\windows\syswow64\oleacc.dll");ctypes.windll.oleaut32.RegisterTypeLib(p,r"c:\windows\syswow64\oleacc.dll", None)

Re: NVDA not announcing listview items in TortoiseSVN commit dialog

Hi,

Makes sense. I believe someone was working on a more generic 64-bit list view support a while back, and I’m wondering if that work might be able to fix this issue.

Cheers,

Joseph
