Re: NVDA "All things for all people!"

I don't think people should censor themselves in
terms of discussing features or criticisms from gratitude. Where should
such gratitude prevail or tone down criticism and where not? I've done
many volunteer presentations over many years on many topics related to blind
people using computers and programs. I most emphatically do not want
gratitude to stop legitimate and civil discussion and criticism of my
work. I can't speak for the developers but I will say that for myself, I
find the let's be so grateful that we tone down or don't criticize position to
be disturbing and counterproductive. Appreciativeness is one thing.
Gratitude, if taken too far, can be distructive.

Subject: [nvda] NVDA "All things for all people!" As I read all the various wish list post here on the list I wish to remind all of our users on this list that NVDA is a project maintained by a handful of developers and not some big software company like the other screen readers which need not be mentioned at this time. There are many of you that at times complain about NVDA being too slow on your older machines. Do you have an understanding that the bigger NVDA gets filled with all of your requested features the bigger it will get and the slower it will become! For a while now it has been mentioned on this list that users should be able to have access to more than one screen reader. Even if it is a demo version because some programs will work better with other screen readers than with NVDA! And finally, if you want NVDA to work with older Windows Operating Systems you need to be realistic in your expectations as far as how many new features can be added to NVDA that can be supported by older Windows Operating Systems? In conclusion: Be grateful for what you have with NVDA! And be more considerate of the Gentlemen who so willingly/lovingly give of their time to make NVDA possible for all of us to use!!! -- Carlos Gonzalez - Los Angeles, CA. - gmjc341961@...

Opera is now based on Chrome. Speaking about add ons, I'm not a heavy user of add ons; I only have a handful of them.

Re: Firefox alternative?
Have you tried resetting Firefox? Particularly if you use add-ons or extensions. I believe Opera was based on Firefox but I have no idea how accessible it is since I haven't played with it in ages.

access keys and key tutorial

In a future NVDA I would like to see a verbosity option. Like in jaws if its set to beginner jaws says stuff like menu bar, and leaving menus when you exit menus or a menu bar. When you are in a list view it tells you what keys to press to navigate it, with edit boxes and other controls it does the same thing. This would help new computer users.

Firefox alternative?
Hi group, Does anyone know of a web browser that is a good alternative to Firefox, but still based on the Firefox engine? I've noticed that Firefox has become quite laggy, at least on my desktop, and in recent years there hadn't been any major new features.

Has your friend checked what version of Windows 10 his/her laptop is running? If it isn't the latest one - 1607 -, he/she should update Windows 10 to that version. I had friends who had the same problem, and it was automatically solved by updating the OS. hth, ciao, Ollie

Strange problem with a brand new laptop and NVDA
Michel Such
Hi all,
Here is what happens. Someone I know has just purchased a new laptop running Windows 10. He installed NVDA and has problems with Firefox and Thunderbird. When pressing alt to get to the menus in both applications, menu items are not spoken, NVDA simply says "unknown". Same problem occurs with LibreOffice menus. As I never encountered this problem, I would like to know if someone already got this, and what solution was found. Reading the NVDA log does not seem to reveal any particular problem, so we don't know what to do. -- Michel SUCH michel.such@free.fr Skype : michel.such Twitter : @SuchMichel

Re: website accessibility guidelines
Jacob Kruger
I work with both XAMPP and WAMP as development platforms on my windows 7/10 machines - both of them offer combinations of Apache web server, PHP and MySQL on a windows machine, and, my programmer's text editor of choice is edSharp, and, I have been doing this for roundabout 20 years now - 10 of them as a 100% blind guy), so have pretty much always just worked in markup/source, and, don't really bother much with IDE's, etc., but anyway.
And, yes, to keep this on-topic, NVDA is also my primary screen
reader.
Stay well

Re: Editing excel
Quentin Christensen
Hi Ketan, You'll be pleased to know that F2 still works just as it ever did - F2 is an Excel command rather than a screen reader command. NVDA does have some Excel specific commands you might be interested in. They are covered in the User Guide here: http://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html?#toc51 I am actually currently working on our training module for Excel, although that is still a few months away from release. When it comes out, it will be available with the other modules in the series at: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/ Kind regards Quentin.

website accessibility guidelines
Where would be the best places to send people for website accessibility guidelines?
I have joined a site called www.gab.ai. They are a new social networking deal. They're only 12 weeks old. They need serious accessibility work on their platform. I"d like to help them with this. That is the basic backstory to my above question.

Re: Accessible calendaring system
Sheri, One additional bit of information that would be helpful is whether or not you're looking for something that maintains a local calendar only or that synchronizes with things like Google Calendar or Microsoft Exchange. Re: Accessible calendaring system

Well, I don' t know about a stand-alone calendar, (though it'd be easy enough to write one if one can't be found). There is one built in to thunder bird that works pretty well. It's not a hundred percent, but it works well enough to do the job. I've heard the calendar in outlook works well, but I can't confirm this, as I've never used outlook. Hope this helps.
