You have to manually enter browse mode, NVDA key space.  As I said a few days ago, and no one addressed my question, does that move the actual application cursor along with the browse mode cursor or does it just move the browse mode cursor.  To get back to the application cursor, once again, use NVDA key space.  It's a toggle.  At least I should say, it's my understanding that in Word, this command toggles browse mode on and off and it must be manually done.

I cannot get NVDA+F3 to work in Word. It works here in Outlook all right but not in Word.

Do you know where I might find a tutorial?

I haven't used Word for a long time and the version I used was too early to have the list.  But isn't there still a command to move through the document to the next or previous occurrence?  If so, it might be easier than working with the list.
We'll see what others who use Word in your version or higher say.

There is method in the madness of teaching Windows+M and Windows+d.

Windows+D maximize the desktop while Windows+M minimize it.

I have found that installing Classic Shell is a great help. This make Win10 look like win7.

Hello,

I think I figured it out.

The top row is folders and under that is a grid of everything in those folders. The problem is that grid is really strangely shaped and if you press an arrow key you may jump to another folder. Nice thing is it will announce the new folder, but that is also what makes it so confusing.

*Note* windows + d also takes you to the desktop like windows + m does, you only need to use one hand though. I've never understood why they teach windows + m when windows + d is easier to do and remember.

Thanks,

Haha, a fun one! First, and apologies to those who may disagree, but it seems to me that currently, the Start menu on 10 with NVDA is slightly less than pleasant to use. :)
I've changed mine up now, I got tired of how crappy it was working for me so I took all the stuff out of the pinned apps area so it no longer shows up, but this is what I was able to figure out.

When you first press the start button and it lands you in the search box, you can press tab, either once or twice and it should take you to a vertical list containing a fairly large number of apps and some of their associated folders. As you arrow up and down here, NVDA will first read the section you come to, so A, B, etc and then under those, read you apps that fall under those sections. As you probably already know, it's here that you can press the applications key and pin said apps to the start menu.

As for the area where Apps actually get pinned, it looks like shift tab is what you want, so doing it from the search box should land you there. It's here that you should be able to use the arrow keys to move up, down, left and right in the grid, but unfortunately, NVDA seems to read things here all weird. As something that looks similar to how IOS likes to create named directories based on the names of the stuff you put in them, as you're moving around here, you'll come to these named sections and can press enter to rename them. As you're moving around here, you'll land on these sections, lets say, Audio and Music just as an example and can sometimes press down or wright and it will start reading you the pinned apps under that section. If you happen to only have one or two things here though, It's sometimes hard to get it to land where you want on the icon or whatever.

I've wondered if it's possible to turn off the structuring of the apps you pin here and just have them in a huge grid, but if so, I've not figured it out.
I'm also not sure if this is something that NVDA just hasn't caught up with and if there are things in the pipe down the road that will make it more friendly, but so far, it is kind of a pain to use. haha

If you play with it though and figure out anything else, I'd certainly be interested.
Take care.

Hello,

The reason why one uses the start menu is so you don't need to open apps to do things like your calendar, whether, news and stocks. you just arrow over those items and you hear what they are.

Hello Brandon,

I find it easier to place application shortcuts on the desktop. This is a two-step process. Hit the windows key, type in the application name, hit the context menu, find file location and enter on it, hit the context menu and go to the send-to menu. Hit the desktop option. Hit windows m to bring you to the desktop, type the first letter of the application, and you will land on it. Note that on the desktop, once you find a and select application, you can hit f2 and change the shortcut’s name.

Subject: [nvda] dealing with Pins on the Windows 10 start

Hello,

Does anyone understand how pins work in Windows 10?

I removed all the junk in hopes that fewer items would make things clearer, but it didn't I pinned a couple things to the start and in order to get to them I need to hit right arrow once and down arrow all the way to the bottom when they should be just down.

Apparently there are folders but I can't understand how they work.

Any help would be great because I would like to start using the start menu.

Thanks,

Brandon Keith Biggs <http://brandonkeithbiggs.com/>

Then we need your secret, as after a day, it stopped working and sits there saying waiting to be linked to an account, but won't let you actually do it from an xp machine.

Hi,
no, the Dropbox client version that still runs with Win XP is blocked from the Dropbox side. So it didn't help to try to prevent the client from updating.
The Dropbox client for XP no longer have access to the server and no longer can't connect into the server.

You still can upload files with CarotDAV on XP to your Dropbox account. But until now CarotDAV can't create a public link to the uploaded files.

Yours sincerely

Arno

Yes not surprised at all, they could not organise themselves out of a plastic back from past experience of issues with synths on Dolphin products some years back. OK they just took it over then, but still...

Actually it will let you in with a very old version, but not if its running on xp.
It obviously detects the operating system. They have sent out many messages from well over a month ago warning people about this and it did actually last an extra day. I see now they are claiming that its a security issue with xp as its not been updated for over two years, however many of us do have xp updates till 2019, and really should not be all shoved together with the great unwashed as it seems xp users are seen these days.

Hi,

the update of Dropbox is pushed by one or more entries in scheduled tasks. So it would be possible to stop the Dropbox client to update itself. But as I wrote in my last mail - it didn't matter. Dropbox didn't let you in with an old version of the client.

Yours sincerely

Arno

Yes I've tried everything. Unless you can spoof the app into pretending its not xp I see no hope of the desktop app working.

I noticed the thing updated on one xp machine to 9.x and asked me to log in with the usual g for girraffe, but on doing so, it did not do it.
I really think they should have disabled the updates and switched the app off. This half hearted log out is a pain and i have had to disable or remove the app on two machines to stop it doing stupid repeated updates and using up processor and on line resources.

I doubt the version of Drop Box matters. I don't think any version will work. If older versions work, I don't know if there is a way to stop updates. Drop Box is not intended to allow the user to control whether updates occur. When not tampered with or the function blocked in some way, Drop Box always updates itself to the current version. But I suspect that the site knows if you are using XP regardless of which version you are using and will sign you out. Others may have information that contradicts what I think but that's what I think.

I don't know how useable the actual site is but you can work with files on the site still if you use XP.

I simply used msconfig to turn it off dropbox that is, at start up and

to properly disable the product when they cut off xp users.

No, basically, as the first thing it does is updates itself then logs you out. You can still use the online parts, but not the desktop applications. I did try to find out why but never got a straight answer, but the suspicion is that they are using more modern compilers for the C code and don't want to have the fuss of putting in special switches to create xp compatible code which may well run slower.

I did suggest allowing access of older versions but their very vague reply suggested that features that will be added could not be supported in the older versions of the app.

In other words, they just don't want to be bothered, is how I read it.

Re: ASSISTANCE OR ADVICE

Sounds interesting.

When the site says "coming soon to your mobile" - do you mean "iPhone" or will it be available for Android as well?  I notice the line further down which mentions working with VoiceOver, but doesn't say anything about TalkBack.

If so, will it be playable between platforms (ie I have an Android and my wife has an iPhone, will we be able to play each other)?

Kind regards

Quentin.
