Re: Windows 10 App Essentials 19.11.2, important announcements on Version 1809 support #addonrelease

Hi,

Can you try installing it from community add-ons website instead of using Add-on Updater? If you can install it from addons.nvda-project.org, chances are that it might be an Add-on Updater problem.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

Hmmm, you can do this by listening to what the version YYMM info is. Another method is using Resource Monitor add-on – if you’ve got that add-on, press NVDA+Shift+number row 6, and it’ll tell you which Windows version you are using.

The most likely explanation might be that you might be running 1803, which may not be the case. Can you tell me exactly which build of Windows 10 you’ve got? You can check it by opening Start menu, typing “winver” (without quotes) to search box and pressing Enter. If the build is 17134, this will explain why because Windows 10 App Essentials requires build 17763 or later.

Hi all,

Windows 10 App Essentials 19.11.2 is now available. This release adds support for announcing results of tile rearrangements – after arranging Action Center quick actions or Start menu tiles, NVDA will announce new item position or item information. As always, the new update is available via community add-ons website or via Add-on Updater.

IMPORTANT: if you are using Windows 10 Version 1809 (October 2018 Update), please read the following to the end:

Support for Version 1809 from Windows 10 App Essentials is coming to a close. Depending on which channel you are subscribed to and NVDA version you’ve got:

  • Development channel: November 12th snapshot onwards (today) will require Version 1903 (build 18362) or later.
  • Development channel optimized for NVDA 2019.3: a snapshot scheduled shortly after NVDACon 2019 will drop support for Version 1809.
  • Stable channel: early 2020.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

The new Microsoft browser that will replace the current Edge is based on Chrome, the open source version.  That is also what the Google Chrome browser is based on.  I suspect that if one Chrome-based browser has problems with a web page or doesn't do something well on it, the other one will have the same or similar problems.  Therefore, I would urge you to place Firefox on the machine.  You may want to use it as your secondary browser, for sites that don't work well with Chrome.  Internet Explorer is going to be retired.  I don't know when, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is retired within between one and two years.  And it is very old technologically.  It hasn't received anything but security updates for years.

In short, you are probably using two browsers that will respond very similarly on web pages and Internet Explorer will be retired and is already not working well on some web pages because it is so technologically archaic.

My oh My! How does that person do it? Hanging onto an old xp box? Most of those old boxes died! How does that person use that old clunker online?  As my windows 7 aged, I found that firefox was getting slower and slower.  I had to use it for my online course.  When that box kicked the bucket. I ended here on win ten. I never installed firefox on this box like I said in an earlier message.  I don’t know how firefox works with win ten.  It worked okay when I had my old xp clunker.

I would like to comment here, and I hope my comments are not out of line.

Firstly, to not update your screenreader, browser or operating system is inherently flawed thinking.

Quite apart from anything else, updating these things plugs up security

holes and exploits that were found, hense the updates in the first place.

While updates have their own inherent bugs, issues, holes and the like,

they are constantly being plugged, patched and fixed when they are

noticed, or insiders, beta testers and developers find or are notified

of them.

There are some arguments for not updating, and while they are valid,

they are not always practical in that you become susceptible to the

aforementioned vulnerabilities.

In the case of windows10, it is not too much of a steep learning curb

from windows7 and in many respects provides you with better performance

and once you get the hang of it, a more efficient way of performing

everyday tasks, as well as tweaking and peaking settings.

Here's where I may come under fire, because it is my personal belief,

that to not update or patch your system, especially in this day and age,

where crackers, and please note the term I used, as opposed to hackers,

are also getting smarter, is the height of folly and stupidity.

I appologise for my harsh words on the subject, but it behooves us as

competent computer operators to insure our system is up to date. even if

we are not all competent computer operators, it is on us to insure that

someone with the requisite knowledge maintains our systems so that they

always run smoothly and efficiently.

This is why I don't use  braille input when editing. Because of translation issues, you're better off using your qwerty keyboard on your computer. I keep my BrailleNote Touch Plus next to my qwerty keyboard when working on my PC. I can then easily use the display to read text. When I find a mistake or something I want to change, I use the corresponding cursor routing key, then the qwerty keyboard to make the change or correction. I hope that helps.

Hi,

What method did you use to attempt to install this? If it is add-on Updater, chances are that it might be something I need to investigate from that add-on; if it is downloading the add-on from community add-ons website, that gives me a reason to investigate more.

Cheers,

Joseph

Windows 10 App Essentials 19.11.2 is now available. Regarding the first problem, it sounds like you either have too many
background services running, or your system is simply not powerful
enough to run a screen-reader comfortably. Although NVDA is (as far as I
know) one of the most lightweight screen-readers around, unfortunately
all such programs are necessarily somewhat resource intensive. Without
knowing more information (E.G. what version of Windows you're running),
I can't say anything more specific. It could also be an issue of NVDA
addons. Have you recently installed any? Do you have a lot of addons
installed?

Turning to your second issue, have you tried switching to the installer
or UAC window? Sometimes they don't always come to the foreground. It
could also be a matter of Windows Smart Screen. I believe this is
accessible with NVDA, but may need to be switched to as well. Beyond
that, I can't help as I have it disabled.

Remote Issue

Chris Mullins

Hi

I am having an issue with Remote Support 2.2 when using the auto connect on start-up option.

My friend has the following Remote.ini:

[connections]

last_connected = nvdaremote.com,

[controlserver]

autoconnect = True

host = nvdaremote.com

key = ********

self_hosted = False

connection_type = 0

port = 6837

[seen_motds]

nvdaremote.com:6837 = b05b33b53003c7c5beab7fa39c247b23a5387676

When my friend starts up NVDA the connection is made however, it connects in ‘Control another machine’ mode when ‘Allow this machine to be controlled’ is specified on the Options screen.  Is there an issue that I’m unaware of regarding this?  Does the connection_type = 0 parameter not indicate that ‘Controlled’ mode is what is required?

Cheers

Chris

Re: NVDA Keyboard Commands

hi

Did you not check caps lock as a nvda modifier key?

if not as mentioned you can do the following.

use the Windos key + B to jump down to the notification area. Then use the arrow keys to find nvda. It might be hidden so will need to un hide it.

If your computer has a applications key while on the icon down there hit it a context menu will come up  then arrow to  preferences then settings and once in settings go to keyboard.

if there is no applications keys you can use the shift and f10 key to do the same.

Under the key board settings pick the caps lock check box and check it.

Here I have all 3 done.

UK Computer Braille

Pele West

Hi Everyone

Most of the time I use Uk Computer Braille. I have noticed that some of
the signs are not the same as I am used to. For example:

0 appears as dots 1-2-3-4-5-6 when I type it but changes to dots 3-4-6.
I have always used dots 1-2-3-4-5-6
Plus Sign is dots 2-3-6 which is the same as Less Than. I have always
used dots 2-3-5
@ sign is dots 2-3-4-6. I have always used dots 2-3-4-6-7 since 8-dot
braille was introduced.

There are also lots of hexadecimal symbols for various signs including
bullet and apostrophe.

Is the table still being written, or is there another version that I
have not seen before?

Is there anything to stop me writing a translation table of my own?

Thanks

Pele West
