Hi,

I had no trouble updating either addon or nvda for that matter.  Just pointing that out just incase.

Braille display not working on websites

Oriana

Hello,

My friend and I finally got her Alva working for displaying Word and epub files, but apparently the movement keys don't work, or don't work the same way, on Chrome or Firefox. Does anyone have any tips and tricks for using a Braille display on the internet? Windows 10 environment, all versions up to date.

Hello All,

I thought I'd let this topic go and that it would die a natural death, but it hasn't.   It has nothing whatsoever to do with NVDA in any meaningful sense and this territory has been well traveled in the past.

Those who refuse to keep up with supported operating systems, software, and hardware will eventually be burned, and possibly burned badly, for making that choice.  Choices have consequences.  But trying to convince those who are adamant about this is an exercise in futility.

This topic is now locked.  Do not revive it here.  If someone feels compelled to extend it do so on the Chat Subgroup.

no, we certainly will not, at least not so blatantly.

I have an XP laptop, but, there is a reason for having it, as the

software I use to program one of my motorola radios will not run on

anything else. however, that system will not and does not get put on the

network, because of the already spoken of vulnerabilities.

Sarah is sadly correct.

There is a reason a lot of us even in the industry will not support end of life systems.

It is one thing to profess your faith, and that is admirable and should be applauded. But, it is not something that will pull your six out of the fire when your system inevitably goes belly up.

And that is what is going to hurt you in the end. I used to be this stubborn until I think it was nvda or something I was using broke, and I was forced to update. You do not want to be in that situation, so update nvda at least that way we can troubleshoot as if you are using old out of date software you might be, no, probably will be refused help, and no amount of prayer will get you that help from us. Sorry but the world moves on and you either move with it, or sink.

no, we certainly will not, at least not so blatantly.

I have an XP laptop, but, there is a reason for having it, as the software I use to program one of my motorola radios will not run on anything else. however, that system will not and does not get put on the network, because of the already spoken of vulnerabilities.

Firstly, to not update your screenreader, browser or operating system
is
inherently flawed thinking.

Quite apart from anything else, updating these things plugs up
security

holes and exploits that were found, hense the updates in the first
place.

While updates have their own inherent bugs, issues, holes and the
like,

they are constantly being plugged, patched and fixed when they are

noticed, or insiders, beta testers and developers find or are
notified

of them.

There are some arguments for not updating, and while they are valid,

they are not always practical in that you become susceptible to the

aforementioned vulnerabilities.

In the case of windows10, it is not too much of a steep learning curb

from windows7 and in many respects provides you with better
performance

and once you get the hang of it, a more efficient way of performing

everyday tasks, as well as tweaking and peaking settings.

Here's where I may come under fire, because it is my personal belief,

that to not update or patch your system, especially in this day and
age,

where crackers, and please note the term I used, as opposed to
hackers,

are also getting smarter, is the height of folly and stupidity.

I appologise for my harsh words on the subject, but it behooves us as

competent computer operators to insure our system is up to date. even
if

we are not all competent computer operators, it is on us to insure
that

someone with the requisite knowledge maintains our systems so that
they

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

The fact you're running an XP system means you are open to more security vulnerabilities than you can poke a stick at.

Running a system that is long passed it's end of life cycle is complete and utter folly.

I know that on the whole, we are either afraid of change or don't wish to do so because what we have works, but, the fact that should you run in to trouble, you will find little to no support for the current system you have, save from those that still retain some knowledge of said system, puts you in a position that I personally would rather not see you in.

Ultimately, however, it is your choice.

yet, you really are not in a position to complain when inevitably, if you'll pardon the expression, the fit hits the shan.

Sarah is right. If your system dies and one day it will! You might want to just bite the bullet and get an updated system.  You can use your old browser and system forever all you like. If and when it breaks. It will be your lookout.  Just for your own piece and mind. You can’t stay on xp forever.  I did not know NVDA at that time. My xp box would not allow me to upgrade to jaws 11. I downgraded to ten it wasn’t good enough. I had to downgrade to nine. Then I realized I had to just let that computer go.  My xp days ended. I went to 7.  Then xp was just a dead hourse. Now 7 is soon going to be a dead hourse.

Added to that, It is just too slow, when I am working on the

have
to go back to the desktop, to start it again.
Sometimes, it take for ever for it to start reading a website.
It
sometimes crashes the site, and never gets to read anything.
All I
hear is Icon Icon.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? I have NVDA
2019.2 on
my computer.
I preferrably use Mozilla firefox as my browser.
The second issue or problem is this:
When I download a program and I attempt to install it, all I
hear is
the program name mentioned, then set up, and nothing gets set up.
I hope this particular problem is well understood.
How can I get to set up these programs when I hear set up, and
after
a

I need help with both issues.
Kind regards.

I appologise for my harsh words on the subject, but it behooves us as

competent computer operators to insure our system is up to date. even
if

we are not all competent computer operators, it is on us to insure
that

someone with the requisite knowledge maintains our systems so that
they

always run smoothly and efficiently.

there has been a change in security used on a lot of sites and a browser that old won't even load pages from a great many sites now.  I don't know enough to discuss the issue technically.  it isn't certain, but I consider it a good guess that things will change over time in such ways that even current browsers now won't be able to work with a lot of sites properly many years from now.

Also, I don't use JAVA unless a site requires it, but increasingly, sites require it to see all the content on the site.

I don't want to pursue the topic on this list because it is something that should be on the chat list or another list, but I'm saying that you are making factually incorrect statements.  You can't use old programs indefinitely.

As

had to use it for my online course. When that box kicked the bucket. I
ended here on win ten. I never installed firefox on this box like I said
in
an earlier message. I don’t know how firefox works with win ten. It
worked
okay when I had my old xp clunker.

Hi, Sean,

I'm in total agreement here. Not updating your screen reader or operating
system is the dummest thing anybody could do. If anybody refuses to
upgrade
or update a screen reader, then they're just asking for trouble.

I would like to comment here, and I hope my comments are not out of line.

Firstly, to not update your screenreader, browser or operating system is
inherently flawed thinking.

Quite apart from anything else, updating these things plugs up security

holes and exploits that were found, hense the updates in the first place.

While updates have their own inherent bugs, issues, holes and the like,

they are constantly being plugged, patched and fixed when they are

noticed, or insiders, beta testers and developers find or are notified

of them.

There are some arguments for not updating, and while they are valid,

they are not always practical in that you become susceptible to the

aforementioned vulnerabilities.

In the case of windows10, it is not too much of a steep learning curb

from windows7 and in many respects provides you with better performance

and once you get the hang of it, a more efficient way of performing

everyday tasks, as well as tweaking and peaking settings.

Here's where I may come under fire, because it is my personal belief,

that to not update or patch your system, especially in this day and age,

where crackers, and please note the term I used, as opposed to hackers,

are also getting smarter, is the height of folly and stupidity.

I appologise for my harsh words on the subject, but it behooves us as

competent computer operators to insure our system is up to date. even if

we are not all competent computer operators, it is on us to insure that

someone with the requisite knowledge maintains our systems so that they

always run smoothly and efficiently.

Hi good people:
I am having two different problems which I will like you chas to
address.
The first problem is with the NVDA screen reader itself.
When I start my computer, and the screen reader turns up, and I hear
"loading NVDA please wait:" nothing comes up again. I have to press
the key combination alttab twice to get back to NVDA, to hear
"welcome
to NVDA dialog. What exactly is happening here:
Added to that, It is just too slow, when I am working on the
internet. Many times, it crashes when i am on a website, and I have
to go back to the desktop, to start it again.
Sometimes, it take for ever for it to start reading a website. It
sometimes crashes the site, and never gets to read anything. All I
hear is Icon Icon.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? I have NVDA 2019.2 on
my computer.
I preferrably use Mozilla firefox as my browser.
The second issue or problem is this:
When I download a program and I attempt to install it, all I hear is
the program name mentioned, then set up, and nothing gets set up.
I hope this particular problem is well understood.
How can I get to set up these programs when I hear set up, and after
a
long wait, nothing gets set up or installed.
I need help with both issues.
Kind regards.
Ibrahim.

You may use it, whether it is a good idea or not, for awhile, it may be a year or two, it may be a number of years.  But at some point, it will become so limited in the number of sites that work with it that you will have to change.  As browsers age, sites change and older browsers will work with increasingly  less of them.  So saying that you will never change makes no sense.  Saying that you will use x or y as long as you can makes sense.  I'm not saying it makes good sense, but it makes sense in matching facts about long term use.
