NVDA 2020.3 Beta 4 now available

Quentin Christensen

Good morning everyone,

NVDA 2020.3 Beta 4 is now available for download and testing. For anyone who is interested in trying out what the next version of NVDA has to offer before it is officially released, we welcome you to download the beta and provide feedback.

Changes since Beta3:

- “Automatic focus mode for caret movement” setting is now compatible with disabling “Automatically set focus to focusable elements”.
- Reverted change to SAPI5 synth driver which introduced regressions.
- Updated translations for many languages.

Also please note, it hasn't gotten a mention in the highlights so far, but NVDA 2020.3 also includes an update to eSpeak-NG.  So those who use that synthesizer, please do also consider trying it out.

More info and download links from: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2020-3beta4/

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hello colleagues,
Luke and Joseph, I'm very grateful to you for the answer!
I want to note that I've already subscribed to NVDA Add-ons mailing list.
And now I'm following the "Steps for getting an add-on approved" topic wich you started today.

There is also a discussion of the Quick Dictionary add-on and review request in the mentioned group:

Good luck to all!

Re: Introducing the Quick Dictionary add-on #addonrelease

Hi all,
The add-ons community does have a detailed document regarding this. At the
moment there's no link to that, but a publicly accessible link will appear
this weekend. Due to the way the original document was written, this
document will go through major revisions to make the content more friendly
toward beginners.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi all.

You can talk with NV Access about the possibility of translate, send a email to info@... or write a message by Facebook or Twitter (is possible that Quentin or other member of the organization read your message in the list now).

The community of NVDA in Spanish (www.nvda.es) go to translate the exam to Spanish, after of the translation of the books available in the NVAccess Shop, for example.

You need the authorization of NV Access for this.

Hi

Have you tried the following site at https://translate.google.com/#en/mi/

You can translate say from english to another language  and I think it can go back the other way as well..

I just can not remember if the certification is a web page and if it changes the address all the time as there are 13 pages or so. It might make it tricky as it is time limited.

is there not some where in google chrome where you can also set the language so if it is in english you can specify the language you want it to change to? I do see some times before you go into a web page it will give you a option to have it translated into your language like in my case english.

Re: Introducing the Quick Dictionary add-on #addonrelease

Oleksandr Gryshchenko

Hello
No, unfortunately, this is not a specialized dictionary.
For now, it's just a general dictionary with detailed information about the selected word or phrase.
This add-on uses an online dictionary and simply sends and receives data over the Internet.

It is possible to make a similar add-on for the medical dictionary.
But unfortunately, I'm not familiar with online medical dictionaries that provide APIs to interact with them.
If you know such services - please send me a link - I'll see if anything can be done.
Best wishes!

Introducing the Quick Dictionary add-on #addonrelease

Janet Brandly

Hi,

This addon sounds interesting. How does it keep up-to-date? Would you consider adding a medical dictionary or doing a separate addon for one? A medical dictionary would have to be kept up-to-date at least annually as things, particularly medications, can change.

Thank you,

Janet

I use it myself and hope that it will be useful for other users.
But this is my first add-on that I share with such a large community and I'm not yet familiar with the procedure for adding add-ons to the add-ons website.
Can anyone tell me where to read about this process?
Or maybe someone already has experience publishing their add-ons and can tell me about it.
Thank you!

Best wishes!

Re: translating the certification exam

Jackie

Is that the official NVDA stance? Somehow I very much doubt it.
Because although the world language might be English, there are a
whole lotta folks using NVDA whose native language is not English, &
they deserve the same chance as those whose native language is.
Learning is hard enough when you're blind. When you have to learn in a
language not your own, it's double-hard. Personally, I admire so much
the folks on this list who, despite having to learn in a language
that's not their native tongue, do it anyway in hopes of helping
others. Their courage is incredible. Anything others can do to ease
that learning curve ought to be fostered & encouraged. NVDA is an
international community. whatever we can do to reinforce that is a
wonderful thing. Congratulate you, Afik! Keep up the great work!
Speaking only for myself, I hope in the coming months NVDA will be
able to put in place such procedures.

It is free for anyone to sit.  When you pass, if you would like to have your name added to the list and receive a certificate, the cost is $100 Australian (roughly 246 Israeli New Shekel according to Google).  We know a number of organisations are using it for their clients to demonstrate proficiency in computer skills.

Hi Afik,

Well, you're here in the NVDA users email group, so that's a great start :)  One thing you can do from right here, is endeavour to help when people ask questions and are stuck with how to do things.

As you know, being open source means NVDA can accept input from anyone, regardless of where you are, and we do value our many volunteer contributors around the world.  We have our list of open issues at: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues which you are most welcome to either contribute to, if you find a bug which isn't there, or investigate to confirm the current status of reported issues.  We accept pull requests for issues, or if you have an idea which might not fit in NVDA core, you might consider creating an add-on for it: https://addons.nvda-project.org/index.en.html

We also have a developers email list you might be interested in joining: https://groups.io/g/nvda-devel

I can't help directly with a job - unless you are based in Australia, in which case we do currently have a developer position we are looking to fill: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nv-access-seeking-software-engineer/  Please note, you do need to be an "Australian resident for tax purposes" to be eligible (you can find the Australian Government's definition of that term here if you are unsure: https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/international-tax-for-individuals/work-out-your-tax-residency/#:~:text=The%20primary%20test%20of%20tax,physical%20presence).

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Veracryp's SecureDesktop opt not usable latest trunk

Hi,
One way to find out: does Narrator announce Vericrypt secure desktop screen? If it doesn't, it might be time to let Vericrypt people know about accessibility issues from their side.
Cheers,
Joseph

Based on the feedback I got so far, I think I need to clarify my
thoughts/questions:

According to Gene, secureDesktop triggered by UAC is working when NVDA is installed.
As I can not test this for now, I'll trust Gene on that one.

Why can't NVDA take advantage of secureDesktop in portable mode (technical limitation, support lacking in NVDA ...)?

The following speaks only in the context of Veracrypt:

As far as testing goes, the secureDesktop triggered by Veracrypt (2) is not accessible with NVDA installed or in portable mode.
If I understand correctly, secureDesktop should at least be accessible when NVDA is installed.

- Why is secureDesktop triggered by Veracrypt not accessible at all?

I appriciate any feedback.

Re: Introducing the Quick Dictionary add-on #addonrelease

Hi Lauracornwell,

> do you know when it will be put into the addons website?

I would really want to add Quick Dictionary to add-ons website.
