Re: link for Hadley survey

Rosemarie Chavarria

Hi, Brian,

I went in and out of browse mode to fill out the fields but even that didn't
work. I don't have this problem on the Safeway site where I do my grocery
shopping. I'm convinced now that it's the survey monkey site because the man
at the Hadley help desk confirmed it for me.

Well, I notice that I can tab to the submit button, though did not try to
press it as I was just interested in the way the page was set up. It seems
you have to force focus/forms mode several times in the page and its very
easy to miss a field when this is being done. I did not hear it say that a
field had to be filled in, as is usual by a star against it. as if you miss
a mandatory field, normally the submit button won't operate and it throws
you back into the form, but as I say, I never tried this.
It could be as simple as it skipped a field it needed to have filled in.

Hi, Brian,

I don't have any add-ons. The man at the Hadley help desk said he's had the
same problem with different surveys. He thinks it could be how the button
was coded. One time I filled out a survey for Microsoft but I had to use
system access to go to do it because NVDA didn't see all the form fields and
buttons.

As it seems not to work for you in all browsers this does indeed seem very
peculiar, unless its specific to your installation of windows 10.

I have no problem seeing each field. In fact I answered each question
with
the adjusted combo box and entered a sample answer and explanations that I
was only testing. Finally I entered the submit button and my submission

matched up and working perfectly.

I wonder why you were having difficulty?

I simply went to the page, pressed b to move to the nexxt button, and was
immediately taken to the submit button. I didn't experiment with the page
otherwise. The person says she can't find the button. We don't know enough
to speculate much as to whether there is some odd and probably unusual
problem with the page on the computer being used. I would consider it
unlikely. I already asked the person with the problem to do a very specific
thing to find out if scripts are being blocked. My question has not been
answered. It is important to answer this specific question.

My problem with Libra is that half the time it refuses to speak at all either in the menu it puts up about what you want to do or when you get a blank doc up. It needs me to move away and back to get the speech back again.

I'm sure this never used to be the case.
Still, I have other machines with older office on it and that still works, well works again now the new version has been fixed.
PS I'd love to know whose idea Microsoft uses for what is correct grammar, I always turned this off as it makes my texts sound like some kind of idiot wrote it.

Danni,

If by "shut off the chatter" you mean to stop NVDA from speaking while you type, etc., you can use NVDA Key+S to toggle speech mode. I also use the No Beeps Speech Mode NVDA add-on so that I either have speech or silence, as there is a third feedback using beeps which I have no use for. The NVDA Key+S is a true on/off toggle for speech if you use that add-on, otherwise it is a cycling switch between, off, beep mode, and speech mode.

Re: Location vs reader

Semirhage,

This add-on is a great one and one I've been using lately so that I can know where NVDA happens to be.  But, be aware that if you're having NVDA read text, say a newspaper article, once the reading goes beyond what's on screen the "green with black squiggle"-edged box does not scroll the screen as it moves from paragraph to paragraph.  You can definitely pause and have your spouse either mouse or arrow around to find where it is, but don't expect that everything is automatically scrolled to keep that box visible on the screen if you're dealing with text that is much longer than what displays on the screen when you begin the reading process.

Re: Facebook with NVDA

Hi,

About forms mode (NVDA space) it sounds when you press this combination, but you can disable it in NVDA's configuration. However which distribution mode are you using for the keyboard? note that if you are using laptops keyboard the NVDA modifier key will be capslock, so the combination is capslock spacebar, but if you are using desktop keyboard the NVDA modifier key will be the insert key. You can see the distribution in the NVDA menu > preferences > keyboard settings or similar (my NVDA is in spanish).
About NVDA shift spacebar, it doesn't use any song, but when you enable or disable that NVDA announces it. Note that as I understand that mode was developed to cases lyke Facebook or similar. You can test if the mode is active by pressing something lyke h key and see if it moves to the next header... if not the mode is working.

mk.

Hi,

I tried firefox, the webbie browser and inteernet explorer and none of the
browsers worked for me. None of the screen readers, NVDA and system access
to go worked for me. I think they need to do something about their site.

Hi Rosemarie,

I am using the latest Firefox, windows 10 and NVDA 2016.2.

I have no problem seeing each field. In fact I answered each question with
the adjusted combo box and entered a sample answer and explanations that I
was only testing. Finally I entered the submit button and my submission was
confirmed with the usual invitation to create my own Survey Monkey
questionnaire.

The interface was very clear and combo boxes and check lists were exactly
matched up and working perfectly.

I wonder why you were having difficulty?

All the best,

Cearbhall

Hi Sem,

Try the Focus Highlight addon on the NV Access addons page: http://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/focusHighlight.en.html

It draws a coloured rectangle around where the focus is and is one of the most effective ways of having a sighted user watching over your shoulder and both of you knowing where you are.

Kind regards

Quentin.

But it does the same thing to me a little if I click on a you tube link I want or where NVDA tells me it is, it will end up on another link. So it acts up worst for us on Amazon when it comes to NVDA  reading one thing and my husband seeing another then for me on you tube it's hit and miss. LOL. Any thoughts?

I tried forms mode or whatever on several sites today with space bar and caps lock as from the suggestions I found that easiest. IT made no sound either way. Was it supposed to? So I don't know if it worked or not. I hit both at once too, that's right?

I'm talking about JAVA scripts.  You don't add JAVA scripts.  You simply allow your browser to run them or not.  JAVA is an operating platform.  JAVA scripts are ways that sites instruct browsers to do things the site wants to do.  We are talking about JAVA scripts.  This site, as with most, doesn't use JAVA, the platform.

You believe that it's the site's problem but that is a very questionable
belief.  It's possible, but highly questionable and the problem needs to be
examined further, Especially since two people have now reported successfully
using the site.

When you go to
http://www.komando.com
do you see any message at the top of the screen about JAVA being disabled
in your browser?

Gene
there is no basis to assume it's the site's problem.

I simply went to the page, pressed b to move to the nexxt button, and was immediately taken to the submit button.  I didn't experiment with the page otherwise.  The person says she can't find the button.  We don't know enough to speculate much as to whether there is some odd and probably unusual problem with the page on the computer being used.  I would consider it unlikely.  I already asked the person with the problem to do a very specific thing to find out if scripts are being blocked.  My question has not been answered.  It is important to answer this specific question.

Re: NVDA commands on sites when doing a search

Brian's Mail list account BY <bglists@...>

It depends on your settings. If you have automatic focus mode on you should hear what I call the guillotine sound when you get into the edit area, if not but it says editable, then hit return before entering the data, and hitinsert/space to come out again.

So like if I am on a site to buy something and want to do a product search, like do they have so and so item, and it appears I'm in the search box typing and it doesn't want to take. Is the site just not blind friendly or is there an NVDA command I need to be using? Sorry if I sound stupid. I've only had time to mainly use NVDA for emails and don't really have to use commands for that so now having to learn the other stuff. This may be the site issue and nothing to do with NVDA but in case I am wrong I thought to ask.
