Re: link for Hadley survey

Brian's Mail list account BY <bglists@...>

The think is though, that apart from a few switches into forms, the form seems to work well for most of us, which points to the issue being something different on your system to most of ours.
What that difference is is hard to say from here of course, its probably only by comparing various pieces of software you run that are not on other computes tha this can be resolved.

I just received an email from the tech at the Hadley help desk. He said he's
had the same problem with different surveys and said it could be the way the
buttons are coded. I had to have my sister fill it out for me.

Press and hold caps lock.  Then press space.  Then release both.  It is a command like any other NVdA command.  To open the NVDA menus, capslock and n while holding the caps lock.
That's an example of another command.

Thanks,Jene. So capss lock then space. Do I release caps lock then space or
just press caps lock first then hold it while spacing? I guess little things
like that may matter LOL. I actually got it to work once last night after
writing this, and it gave the nice clicking sound and I was all happy but it
was mainly luck. LOL.

Re: NVDA Issues.

Quentin Christensen

It definitely sounds like a problem with the control key on the keyboard.

Ok try turning input help on - press NVDA+1 (the 1 above the q).  NVDA will read out any key that you press, but nothing will happen - so if you press the windows key it will announce "Left Windows" but the start menu won't open.

So try pressing and releasing each of your control keys - it should announce "Left control" and "Right control".

Assuming that works, try pressing NVDA+control+f - NVDA should announce "Control+NVDA+f".  If it only reads "NVDA+f" then try pressing three other keys - say alt+shift+s - NVDA should read those three keys out.

The only things I can think of are either a problem with your control key as mentioned previously, or perhaps your keyboard isn't recognising all three keys pressed at once.  Some keyboards are better than others in terms of how many keys they can recognise as being pressed at once, although I don't think I've ever seen one that couldn't recognise three...

Anyway, see how you go with that.

Kind regards

Quentin.

on a lap top i also have that key combo works fine.
and no i do not have the laptop layout on in nvda on my desktop.
Now as to the other question every so offten nvda goes into a read

That you can not save any settings why is this? and how can you fix it.
The only way i can fix it is by taking the half read only away from
the folder.
but when i do i can not still save settings when shutting nvda down
it will not come back when doing  alt control n.
So please help!!!!!!

Re: Location vs reader

Gene

When you use browse mode, you are not using a real cursor.  You are not working directly with the web page  you are working with a reformated version of the page.  I don't know if there is any way to synchronize where you seem to be on screen and where NVDA announces you are.  I don't even know if there is supposed to be any sort of actual synchronization between where the screen shows you to be and where NVDA announces you are.  Others who know more may wish to address this.  Just because browse mode tells you you are at X or Y place on the web page, that doesn't necessarily mean that on the actual web page, that's where you will be shown to be as a sighted user.  The reformated web page you hear in the browse mode buffer isn't even formatted in the same way.  All the links you see at the top of a web page when you use browse mode may actually be a list of links running down the left site of the real web page.
You may then see other content after that using browse mode.  The real web page may display the same content but to the right of the block of links running down the left side of the page.

This can't be read in logical order so your browser reformats the page.

Some pages do better at knowing where you actually are, some don't  But you are not working with the real web page and there may or may not be good synchronization.  I never rely on a sighted person telling me where something is.  It's irrelevant.  They might tell me something is in the middle of a bar of links on the right side of a page.  To me, that may really be near the bottom of the web page, as it is shown to me.

The order of a lot of web pages as a blind person sees it is roughly this:
Links at the top, other content below, links at the bottom.
For a sighted person, the page appears roughly as:
A bar of links running down the left, other content to the right, then a bar of links to the right.

It's just that NVDA seems to read far from where is visible and I don't get why it doesn't all stay together. LOL. If it tells me I'm on one you tube link and I'm really on another it's a pain. Not sure the box will help with t hat, but if it helps my husband it's cool. We'll just have to try it out and see. Thanks to all. It's not usually an article so much as a website with pictures. If we're looking at a dragon or gargoyle pendant or whatever, I can only get so much from the description people put up on sites so if it sounds cool I want him to look at it to see if we want it because he knows the style I like and he likes the same so yeah...but like I wanted to show him a gargoyle pendant and he was seeing like five pendants above where i was so yeah we'll try this out and see how it works.

Also with the focus add on, if you press the nvda key + the tab key it should tell you if it is on screen or off screen where you can not see it, then you might have to scroll to see where it is.

Re: link for Hadley survey

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

Rosemarie,

I would ask you to be very precise with him to define which buttons you have
found not to be well coded. I have flagged the coding of the "no" button in
his drop-down list. That is the only one which is not coded as "no" in the
option list but does appear as "No" in the displayed result when you choose
the third option. This implies that the code he is using to populate the
drop down list is at fault. The actual selection displays correctly for that
option.

There are no other faults with the coding of the questionnaire.

In fact, I have tried other questionnaires generated on this site on
previous occasions and they gave me great problems where you could not tell
if the option displayed in the question referred to the question that
preceded it or which followed it. He has nothing like that here.!The whole
questionnaire is solid. Another chronic problem with other questionnaires is
the editor program that provided to allow you to enter free form data. In
other questionnaires I have not been able to keep the cursor in track with
the reading cursor. On other occasions, spaces appear when there should be a
character that I have typed . The programmer has none of this here. His
editor is accurately in track with the review cursor, however he has managed
to do it!

I wish you would give Gene a full answer to his questions. It is rare that
we encounter a good accessible production like this questionnaire. You may
find that you have been burdened with the rare option that confounds the
programmer's efforts. We would like to help you get to the bottom of it. In
this way we can help you and the programmer to resolve the difficulty.

All the best,

Announcing Windows 10 App Essentials NVDA add-on version 16.06.1 #redstone #nvdasr

Hi all, mostly NVDA folks:

I’m delighted to announce the immediate release of Windows 10 App Essentials add-on 16.06.1. The release notes can be found here:

http://github.com/josephsl/wintenapps/releases/latest

Among other things, this version allows NVDA to announce notifications from Edge web browser (such as download status (download prompt for Redstone)), as well as providing workarounds for Redstone version of Calculator app.

Good luck.

P.S. I believe you should not be left in the dark as to what screen reader developers are doing in terms of Windows 10 (particularly Redstone) support, hence this post. For members of the Win10 group: besides NVDA and Narrator, users of other screen readers that declare support for Windows 10 are always welcome.

Cheers,

Joseph

Ok, i have some questions and hopefully something can be done.
My first question is about the find comand nvda control f the regular nvda control f for me does not work weather i use a whireless or USB computer keyboard.
the extended nvda control f works but I am used to the regular way of doing things; Yes i set up a different hot key combo but would perfer to be able to use the regular nvda control f.
on a lap top i also have that key combo works fine.
and no i do not have the laptop layout on in nvda on my desktop.
Now as to the other question every so offten nvda goes into a read only mode.
That you can not save any settings why is this? and how can you fix it.
The only way i can fix it is by taking the half read only away from the folder.
but when i do i can not still save settings when shutting nvda down it will not come back when doing alt control n.
So please help!!!!!!

Re: NVDA Issues.

Life My Way

Well, first of all, using windows 7 64 bit pro, nvda 2016.2.1 in fire fox, ie, crome when doing nvda control f all i get is formating info. does not matter which control key is being used.

I am the only one on the computer as owner So now what?

To be honest I don't understand what you are asking here. We need context in order to figure out what the issue is. Practical examples including software running version of windows etc.
I can only say that if you are a non admin user and are using a copy of nvda installed by another user who has not granted write status to you you are in effect stuck with the settings as they are or as you temporarily set them.
I do not understand the control f ref here as this does different things according to what softwar you are running and attempting to make it work as an nvda command is going to have clashes.

Hi, Brian,

I went in and out of browse mode to fill out the fields but even that didn't
work. I don't have this problem on the Safeway site where I do my grocery
shopping. I'm convinced now that it's the survey monkey site because the man
at the Hadley help desk confirmed it for me.

Well, I notice that I can tab to the submit button, though did not try to
press it as I was just interested in the way the page was set up. It seems
you have to force focus/forms mode several times in the page and its very
easy to miss a field when this is being done. I did not hear it say that a
field had to be filled in, as is usual by a star against it. as if you miss
a mandatory field, normally the submit button won't operate and it throws
you back into the form, but as I say, I never tried this.
It could be as simple as it skipped a field it needed to have filled in.

Hi, Brian,

I don't have any add-ons. The man at the Hadley help desk said he's had the
same problem with different surveys. He thinks it could be how the button
was coded. One time I filled out a survey for Microsoft but I had to use
system access to go to do it because NVDA didn't see all the form fields and
buttons.

Do you have any add ons in nvda maybe?
As it seems not to work for you in all browsers this does indeed seem very
peculiar, unless its specific to your installation of windows 10.

to fill out surveys anymore.

Rosemarie,

Normally, I would support you completely on your findings. Especially when
a
survey is inaccessible. Could you explain what operating system,
generation
of NVDA, and version of Firefox you are using?

After that I can compare my settings with yours and see why I have no
problem accessing the survey when you are having so much trouble.

For the record, here is a screen capture of what NVDA sees in the survey
after I filled it in with trial data:

Hi Rosemarie,

I am using the latest Firefox, windows 10 and NVDA 2016.2.

I have no problem seeing each field. In fact I answered each question
with
the adjusted combo box and entered a sample answer and explanations that I
was only testing. Finally I entered the submit button and my submission
was
confirmed with the usual invitation to create my own Survey Monkey
questionnaire.

The interface was very clear and combo boxes and check lists were exactly
matched up and working perfectly.

I wonder why you were having difficulty?

All the best,

I wasn't using a script blocker to answer your question. Anyway, my sister

I simply went to the page, pressed b to move to the nexxt button, and was
immediately taken to the submit button. I didn't experiment with the page
otherwise. The person says she can't find the button. We don't know enough
to speculate much as to whether there is some odd and probably unusual
problem with the page on the computer being used. I would consider it
unlikely. I already asked the person with the problem to do a very specific
thing to find out if scripts are being blocked. My question has not been
answered. It is important to answer this specific question.

Hi, Paul,

I just heard from the man at the Hadley help desk. He had the same problem

buttons are coded. He suggested I try another screen reader but I don't
think that would work either. I already had my sister fill it out for me so
it's already done.

Hi Rosemarie,

I just tried out the survey on three browsers. I used IE11, Chrome and
firefox with no issues. I wish all such form webpages could be as easy. Any
chance it might be the anti virus you are using. Hope Gene won't jump down
my throat about this,*smiles*.
