Using Adobe Acrobat?
Hello, Does anyone know of any tutorials on how to use Adobe Acrobat Pro with NVDA? Here are the things I can't figure out: 1. How to OCR. 2. How to Sign and create my own signature. 3. How to create editable fields in an already existing PDF. 4. How to edit a PDF with spelling errors from OCR. 5. How to create formatting like headings. Thanks,

FW: [win10] Accessible World presentation on Anniversary Update: technical version and clarifications

Hi, After the Accessible World presentation, I felt certain things needed in-depth overview, hence the below podcast and a few notes. Thanks. Cheers, Joseph

Sent: Wednesday, August 3, 2016 10:39 AM To: win10@win10.groups.io Subject: [win10] Accessible World presentation on Anniversary Update: technical version and clarifications #WinTen1607
Hi,
For those who’d like to get a deeper (and a bit more technical) overview of Anniversary Update, I have recorded a podcast providing additional information and clarifications from Accessible World presentation from August 1st: http://nvda-kr.org/files/winten14393B.mp3
Things covered include: · OneCore (some info derived from an Ars Technica article from Peter Bright). · Build numbering changes and why. · Why browse mode in Edge broke for NVDA users and happenings since then, why traditional virtual buffer implementations will not work in Edge anymore. · The story behind toasts (app notifications). · Redesigned User Account Control. · Skype Preview app. · Windows Subsystem for Linux, specifically how Linux kernel 3.4 system calls are handled. · How scan mode in Narrator works.
Specifics (quite technical):
OneCore is a set of most fundamental routines all devices running Windows 10 share. The goal of this project was to unify routines used within Windows NT kernel (ntoskrnl.exe), such as security, file system support, basic API’s and so on. Each device family then adds layers on top, such as:
· PC’s: OneCore + Universal Windows Platform + desktop app support + desktop interface + Internet Explorer + other components. · Mobile: OneCore + UWP + cell phone connectivity stack + smartphone interface and others. · Server 2016: OneCore + server components. · Xbox: oneCore + UWP + game virtual machine + support for gaming hardware and so on. · HoloLens: OneCore + UWP + Windows Holographic and others. · IoT: OneCore + UWP + IoT-specific things. · Surface Hub: OneCore + UWP + Desktop apps support + multi-touch support and others. · Future devices: OneCore + (possibly) UWP + device-specific layers. Edge: Browse mode broke due to different UIA framework ID’s in use (InternetExplorer versus MicrosoftEdge). According to a MS engineer who was interviewed for the most recent Main Menu podcast, due to security practices and to use modern standards and UIA, Edge does not permit traditional virtual buffer mechanisms anymore, thus screen readers must be modified to handle UIA better and support Edge-specific controls.
App notifications: until Version 1511, when toasts (app notifications) appear, they fired (sent) tooltip show event, used by screen readers to catch it and announce toasts. Starting with a more recent Insider build for Anniversary Update, tooltip events are not fired by toasts; instead, a window open UIA event is used, thus screen readers were (or must be) modified to handle this change. Also, when high priority toasts appear, UIA class name changes, thus some screen readers were modified (or must be modified) to handle this case as well.
Skype Preview app: when someone is typing, a UIA event is fired. But when someone is not typing, Skype Preview app does not clear typing indicator text, confusing screen reader users (a feedback regarding this UIA implementation issue was sent to Microsoft).
Subsystem for Linux: a partnership between Microsoft and Canonical brought this to life. Originally used to research running Android apps on Windows 10 Mobile (Astoria), this changed so some unmodified Ubuntu binaries can function under Anniversary Update with a twist. Specifically, a concept of a minimal process and a picoprocess is used to accomplish this (a minimal process is an empty process when Windows NT kernel sees it; a picoprocess is a representation of a user-mode process from another operating system with a system component serving as a proxy). Because Windows NT kernel (specifically, Windows Native API) does not have certain Linux kernel features, a pico driver called lxss.sys (Linux Subsystem) is used to emulate some system calls if Windows kernel cannot handle it. This is just one of the aspects of this new subsystem (available for developers running 64-bit Anniversary Update and uses an image of Ubuntu 14.04) (all info came from a blog entry on picoprocess found in Microsoft, a part of a larger series on Windows Subsystem for Linux).
User Account Control: Until Version 1511, UAC dialog was powered by Win32. This has changed in Anniversary Update: now powered by the technology used to represent UI in universal apps (called XAML (eXtensible Application Markup Language)). Thus screen readers must be modified to read UAC prompts.
Narrator’s scan mode: when active, up and down arrows emulate caps lock+left/right arrows.
Hope this helps. Cheers, Joseph

360 Total Security and how to get rid of it?
Lisa P Geibel
Hi,
Please, please, tell me there's a way that my husband and i can get rid of this on our own as totally blind people? We have the latest version of JAWS as well as the latest version of NVDA and will use whichever one will let us do this and are using Windows 10. When my husband got an iCloud update this program got on our computer and it now is preventing us from updating to the latest TWBlue or using it at all. It's also slowing the computer down somewhat too. We have and use Viper and are amazed it allowed this on here. The program is not accessible with either JAWS or NVDA and we've tried to remove it the normal way to remove a program with no success. If anyone can help or knows anything about this, please email me either privately or on list? Thanks. -- Lisa E-Mail: lisapgeibel429@gmail.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/ldporter1 Twitter: http://twitter.com/LisaLisa429 Philmore box shared with hubby: 773-572-7897 God bless everyone!!!

Re: [finding styles in word 2016
Cearbhall O'Meadhra
Quentin,
Thanks for this really comprehensive explanation!
The control+alt+number etc. are very useful and do meet the present need.
I tried the alt+shift+left arrow and this keeps the same heading 2 but changes the outline level of heading2. Does this confuse the order of the headings?
I am trying to see what the Style Inspector and the style Manager are used for. I can see that the show or “hide until used” are set under the “recommended” tab in the properties of each style.
The styles only show up in my “Apply styles” window when they are actually assigned in the document.
I’ll do a bit more experimenting and get back when I have a better understanding of how all this works.
Thanks for getting me started!
All the best,
Cearbhall

Hi Cearbhall,
Firstly, if you just want to set the current style to Heading 2, you can use the keystroke of control+alt+2. You can also use control+alt+1 for Heading 1 and control+alt+3 for heading 3. Shortcut keys for Heading 4 and downward aren't set, however you could if you wanted. You can however, select text and press alt+shift+right arrow to go down one heading level or alt+shift+left arrow to go up one heading level.
Now back to the Apply Styles toolbar you are using. When you press control+shift+s in Word, it opens the Apply Styles toolbar. The focus starts in the "Style name" edit (which is actually a combo box - you can either type in here or use the arrows to select existing styles).
The currently selected style in the style name edit SHOULD be whatever the style of the current text is, so if you move to text that is in the heading 2 style, that's what should be selected.
Generally I've found that works fine, although interestingly, in testing this for you this morning, I found several times that the style name edit is originally blank. It seems to do this whether NVDA is running or not - perhaps a recent minor update to Office has changed something or something is going weird on this system (it works fine on my other Windows 10 / Office 2016 system) - it didn't do that when I wrote the styles section in Word with NVDA module.
As a workaround if it happens to do the same for you, the "Styles" toolbar, which is accessed by control+alt+shift+s (the same as apply styles but with the alt included as well), seems to read fine although you need to press F6 to get to it. As an added bonus however, you can bring up the context menu for say, heading 2, and select all text in your document of that style (the kind of thing on the one hand you might never use, but if you need it, you'd find really handy).
Kind regards
Quentin.

From: nvda@nvda.groups.io [mailto:nvda@nvda.groups.io] On Behalf Of Cearbhall O'Meadhra
Hi Joseph,
The issue is simply that NVDA does not speak the erroneous word in the spell checker in Outlook 2016. The rest of the dialog is read out. Also the proposed correction is read out in both focus mode and review mode.
The only time that NVDA seems to be able to speak the erroneous word is within the flow of text from NVDA+b.
I am sorry to hear that this is a known problem since everyone else today has been insisting that it is not a problem! I can confirm that it is definitely a problem on my system.
What a pity!
All the best,

Hi all, Let’s see what’s up… If I heard you right, you are saying that object nav doesn’t work, and that when you press F7 from Word 2016, NvDA does not announce misspelled word and so on? If the latter, then this is a known problem, and it’ll be quite tricky to fix. Cheers, Joseph

Are you using object navigation or flat review? I think it's called screen review in newer versions of NVDA. Use object navigation. Move using numpad insert 4 to go baqck and nunmpad insert 6 to go forward.
there are times when object navigation sees things that screen review won't. This appears likely to be one such time.
gene ----- Original Message ----- From: Cearbhall O'Meadhra Sent: Saturday, July 30, 2016 8:38 AM Subject: Re: [nvda] NVDA not reading Spell Checker fields
Quentin,
The keystroke NVDA+b is the only tool that gives me the erroneous field.
It starts at the top of the dialog and, when it comes to “Not found in dictionary” if repeats this twice followed by “alt plus” and then repeats “not found in dictionary” once more followed by the erroneous text and then continues on to read to the bottom of the dialog.
This is the only time when the erroneous word is spoken. It is not available when I use the numpad to review the text even though NVDA+b has spoken it. Yet, the offered correction is available in all modes of review.
Any ideas?

Use the review cursor to read the previous text to get the misspelled word, and you can also read forward further down the pane to get the dictionary meaning of replacement words.
To read the context of the spelling error, the best option is to press escape to go back to the document, read the line / sentence / etc, and press F7 to go back to spell check again (or F6 to move back to the pane).
Here's the section of the User Guide on the review cursor: http://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html?#ReviewingText
I'm almost finished writing the Word for NVDA course and included a topic on several methods for using the spell check, including activities. The Word course isn't available yet although the basic training for NVDA course is which covers the review cursor etc - see: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/

Re: EDITING HEADERS IN OFFICE 2010
Marisane Moruthanyana
Hi Christo
This is Wally.
I hope you are well there.
I am trying.
The simplest way to deal with headers is to press alt+n+h and then navigate within the dialogue. In that way, you are sure the screen reader will respond without problems.
My JAWS sometimes freezes as well when I try and use the key combination sequence as you mentioned.
Remember, I am using JAWS 16 latest build, of course NVDA 16.2.1 in word 2010 and 2013.
It just happens that the screen reader sometimes does not behave as one expects.
Hope this may help.
Enjoy NVDA.

Hi Christo
If you do the sequence to slow it will not focus in the right place. I tried it a little slow then quicker and when done quicly this time it landed in the same places a few times where I could edit the header. Once it has been edited and entered, then the escape key done It seems or is working correctly. and lands in the right spot to edit it. Doing the sequence slow will do as you said before.
By the way I am using nvda 2016.2 and word 2010 and windows 10.
