Re: FW: Notes on NVDA and PowerPoint

Hi Cearbhall
If you are interested I have a basic tutorial on how to use powerpoint 2010 it is not on my web site yet, but also has a list of the short cuts for it as well. It is enough to make up a powerpoint add extra slides play it etc. it has not been tidied up yet
but more can be added to it.
I got bored and started putting it together after reading the material in the email of yours. I would also like to have a look at yours when your power point tutorial is done.
I just finished off a face book tutorial yesterday and posted it along with a audio tutorial, so had a play with power point.
I think with some people they really need to get there head around ribbons first and how to navigate them first then have a go at the program.
Otherwise they will get flicked all over the place if not done correctly.

PowerPoint seems to change radically over the years and keystrokes seem to differ for older versions than those which I am
using now.
I would be delighted to have the final set of instructions put up on the web but let’s prove them to be accurate first. I
am doing this work because I have found the existing pointers (few as they are!) to be incorrect and misleading. Perhaps this is because they relate to older versions.
The keystrokes I have listed here work in both JAWS 17 and NVDA for office 2010 and are the recommended ones for Office 2016
so that is hopeful!
If members of the list could try out the keystrokes and prove them correct or faulty in their own PC or laptop that would
be a great help.

Hi Cearbhall
The closest I have got is all the shortcuts for powerpoint that can be used. I think they are for powerpoint 2010 and 2013.
The commands you gave can they be used the same on a desktop pc? as well or are these laptop ones.
I played around with powerpoint a while ago when it was first supported but that is as far as i went.
Would you mind if these directions are also put up on a website on how to use powerpoint?

Hello all,
I haven't followed the list for some time, so I don't know whether this has been discussed previously.
For a few days now, I find that I can't copy text to clipboard via the NVDA+f9-NVDA+f10 commands. Actually, I find it difficult also to select text using the normal Windows Shift+Down Arrow command. The only thing that seems to work is selecting by character.
I'm running Windowss10, with the latest NVDA Next snapshot, but this has been going on for a week at least.
I first noticed it after installing the development version of Instant Translate to test, but I don't think this has anything to do with the issue. Just to make sure, I uninstalled the add-on, but the problem didn't go away.
Has anyone experienced the same problem? How have you solved it, if you have at all? Ciao, thanks in advance. Ollie

Hi Cearbhall,
The modern PowerPoint file is a package file. A lot of it is XML. You can review tables in slide show mode but otherwise, as of this writing, I think we will have to edit tables outside PowerPoint. Having said that, it is worth exploring if the tables are rendered in the NVDA object model and if we can’t build in that feature into NVDA.

Pranav,
Thanks for this detail! I am coming to realise more and more that PowerPoint is simply a tool for managing parts of a flat text file. This occurred to me when I opened a PowerPoint file on the iPhone. The iPhone ignores the various control characters that PowerPoint embeds in the file to create the slides and various display options. It simply presents the flat file!
In that case, I suppose that PowerPoint is not capable of creating a Word table which we could navigate by using the usual screen reader table navigation controls.
If I am right about the basic nature of the PowerPoint file, and I am open to criticism on this if anyone can advise me, then the Powerpoint program is simply picking up certain characters that mean the beginning and end of a slide and various other characters that mark the beginning and end of its various object placeholders
For this reason, I think we can only make use of the F6 key and the tab and arrows to get around the PowerPoint document. I know JAWS offers far more but I think these are only gilding the lily!

Hi Cearbhall,
I usually edit tables in Word or Excel and then get them into Powerpoint. If I must edit them in PowerPoint, I then use word by word navigation with the ctrl+left and right arrow and line by line navigation to move around in the table. The only way I know of is to be familiar with the content of the table so that you know what you are editing. I wish there was a better answer.

Good to hear your experience. I am relieved to find that your experience reflects my own.
I am particularly interested in the detail of navigating tables. As you say, column divisions are not echoed so:
1. How do you know when you are in one column or another?
2. Is there any way of knowing which column your active point is in?
3. What keystrokes are involved apart from those which you have already described?

Hi all,
In terms of table navigation and editing:
1. I can read tables in slide show mode.
2. When in object navigation mode, reading of a table or editing a table is difficult because column seperators are not spoken. This used to happen even with Jaws version 16 I think.
3. I am on PowerPoint 2016 and whatever has been discussed so far is applicable to that version.
4. The tab and shift+tab are standard keystrokes. The same applies to f6 and shift+f6.

Re: Issue with Copying to clipboard
Yes. Obviously, after you've selected the text with nvda+f9 and nvda+f10, you can cut, remove, replace the selected text only in edit text documents. Of course, the position marker with review cursor is useful to copy in text only read, when the text is not accessible in focus mode.
Cheers.

So does this effectively make it a tool for text selection which allows you to then use ctrl x to cut or delete to remove the selected text as well as f10/ctrl c to copy to clipboard?

The key nvda+F10: If pressed once, the text from the previously set start marker up to and including the current position of the review cursor is selected. If pressed twice, the text is copied to the clipboard. Cheers.
Chris.

Hello all,
I haven't followed the list for some time, so I don't know whether this has been discussed previously.
Ollie

Re: Issue with Copying to clipboard
So does this effectively make it a tool for text selection which allows you to then use ctrl x to cut or delete to remove the selected text as well as f10/ctrl c to copy to clipboard?
Cheers Chris

Re: turning off suggestions in search boxes using firefox and google
jordy deweer <webmaster_deweer@...>
Hi, I don’t know i fit is possible in the Google search engine itself, because that is a choice of Google Inc. But I know that you
can use the addressbar to search with Google in Firefox. That gives suggestions too. It is possible to stop this in the options of Firefox. I don’t know the address to go to the options, but with the menu it is as follows:
Extra > Opties in Dutch, Tools > Options (or preferences or anything else) in English.
By the way, I think that if you have a Google account, you can stop the suggestions on the website of google too! Look in the Google
Settings!
And do not forget to press the link “Screen reader users, click here the stop Google Instant”. I think this will help you much more
on the Google website!

Re: Firefox going blank on edit boxes
Brian Thank you for taking the trouble to reply. I don't understand the point you are making, but I just thought I would share the solution in case anyone else is having trouble signing in to their web pages on Firefox. I had "Enable Java Access Bridge" in the Ease of access centre control panel because I thought that Java might have been running. However, that prevented NVDA from entering the edit boxes for signing in and entering the password. As soon as I turned off Java Access Bridge I was able to sign in without any problem! I hope this information helps someone else to save tearing out more of their hair! Re: FW: Notes on NVDA and PowerPoint
Pranav, An interesting option! I will watch out for developments. Meanwhile, I think we have covered all the issues with regard to PowerPoint and its use with NVDA. I’ll write up my tutorial and post it to the list for observations. Thanks for your help and to all the others who contributed. A lot of it is XML. You can review tables in slide show mode but otherwise, as of this writing, I think we will have to edit tables outside PowerPoint. Having said that, it is worth exploring if the tables are rendered in the NVDA object model and if we can’t build in that feature into NVDA. If I am right about the basic nature of the PowerPoint file, and I am open to criticism on this if anyone can advise me, then the Powerpoint program is simply picking up certain characters that mean the beginning and end of a slide and various other characters that mark the beginning and end of its various object placeholders For this reason, I think we can only make use of the F6 key and the tab and arrows to get around the PowerPoint document. I know JAWS offers far more but I think these are only gilding the lily! All the best, Cearbhall m +353 (0)833323487 Ph: _353 (0)1-2864623 e: cearbhall.omeadhra@... Hi Cearbhall, I usually edit tables in Word or Excel and then get them into Powerpoint. If I must edit them in PowerPoint, I then use word by word navigation with the ctrl+left and right arrow and line by line navigation to move around in the table. The only way I know of is to be familiar with the content of the table so that you know what you are editing. I wish there was a better answer. Pranav Pranav, Good to hear your experience. I am relieved to find that your experience reflects my own. I am particularly interested in the detail of navigating tables. As you say, column divisions are not echoed so: 1. How do you know when you are in one column or another? 2. Is there any way of knowing which column your active point is in? 3. What keystrokes are involved apart from those which you have already described? All the best, Cearbhall m +353 (0)833323487 Ph: _353 (0)1-2864623 e: cearbhall.omeadhra@... Hi all, In terms of table navigation and editing: 1. Pranav Has anyone had luck navigating tables in powerpoint? Table navigation does not work for me in powerpoint. I have to resort to using tab to step through every cell.
Thanks, Sent from my iPhone, please forgive the typos. Hi, You can also press ctrl+F6 or ctrl+shift+F6 to move forth and back between pannels. And S and D (or was it A and S) also work to go to the previous and next slide in the slideshow. Regards, Sukil

Re: Issue with Copying to clipboard
Yes, I too find it complicated to select text even with ordinary Windows commands. That's why I always use NVDA copying methos, ehiwh is fast and effective, and definitely easier to handle.
This is one of the features I'm most grateful for in NVDA.

It not so bad on 7 and fine on xp here.
I think we need a sighted person to do some tests with andwithout nvda just using the normal windows keys not the mouse. Brian

Hello all,
I haven't followed the list for some time, so I don't know whether this has been discussed previously.
Ollie

Ask since, while don't think it should cause an issue, I am in sort of default object review mode, but, think, at least the f9/f10 commands should work fine in screen review mode as well, but, for the standard shift selection, make sure you are in object review mode, just in case.
Stay well
