Development of a new braille display driver

Shyam Shah

Hi,
I am Shyam from India. I run an assistive technology company - Innovision. We are coming up with a braille display and need to develop a driver for the NVDA screen reader. Could anyone guide me to the right person for this job?

Re: Updating add-ons

Gene New Zealand <hurrikennyandopo@...>

Hi

I did read something about auto updating from I think it was Joseph but
I can not find it now.

it sounds like it will take a bit of time to do.

I do not like the update feature in another screen reader I tried out
called Window eyes unless I have installed those add ons my self. The
idea is a good one, depending how much work it involves.

There is a add on called weather plus that I like but it also alerts you
of a new add on when it has been updated and when installed it will not
remind you any more. it is easy to install that way as well.

Not sure how much extra work it would be for the authors of the add ons
but it saves me looking when i get that alert. But looking does not hurt
any how.

could the same idea ben used for other add ons that come off the main
website? or do they come from the authors website?

I find no problem with going to the website any how to get the add ons
they only get installed now and again.

If a person goes into the manage add ons section there is a button you
can press enter on that takes you to that add on page.

That is the main one.

Any type of software i use i look around it to see what features there
are how to use it etc.

I thought it wouldive been the same with nvda.

as of right now you basically have to go to the add ons website and
download new versions manually. there was talk of adding automatic
updates but people think it is too much work to do for people who can
just check for updates on the website anyway. The thread is below if
you want to read it but there is not enough interest it looks like for
people to make this happen.

Re: NVDA Certification?

Shaun Oliver

now this is something I'm interested in pursuing.

As a full time NVDA User, I would like to say I have certification in order that I might be able to train others in the use of the software so they can use it effectively and efficiently.

Hi Quentin,

That is fine with me, There is a fee to get your certification for using JAWS, so I will gladly pay the fee to help out the NVDA community to advance the great work being done on NVDA. Thanks

Hi Travis & everyone,

Yes that is correct, there will be a fee (I'm not sure exactly how much yet) but like the training material itself, our intention is to both keep this very reasonable, and of course the cost goes directly to the on-going development of NVDA itself.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Cool! how much will the certification testing cost? I'm assuming any fees for certification will be rolled into the development of NVDA, (not a bad way to raise funds actually).  Assuming the fees aren't too bad, I'd be very interested in this certification.

On 12/7/2016 9:10 PM, Quentin Christensen wrote:

Hi everyone,

To compliment the training modules we are slowly releasing, a series of certifications is also being developed.  The first of these, to correspond to the knowledge gained from the "Basic Training for NVDA" module, is due to be available shortly.

The assessment will be online, and yes, achieving certification will be something that you may include in your e-mail signature or promotional material etc.

Apologies for the delay in making the certification available - as is so often the case, it always takes longer to implement that you at first think, but we'd rather have it a little later than originally planned, but done right.

I'll be sure and let the group know once it's available.

Kind regards

Quentin.

NVDA Certification is an exciting new program which allows participants to demonstrate and confirm their in-depth knowledge of NVDA.

This program is particularly suited to:

list of 5 items
• Trainers
• Technicians
• Accessibility professionals
• Add-on developers
• Dedicated users of NVDA who wish to demonstrate their proficiency.

More information on how to become certified will be available on the NVDA web site shortly.

This was taken from section 14.14.

Finally taken from instructions.txt:

Upon completion of the topics in this module, you may be interested in sitting the certification exam.  Successful completion of the certification will enable you to be listed as a certified user, and provide you with a uniquely numbered, printable certificate you can use to quantify your proficiency with NVDA (available 3rd quarter 2016).  Please see http://www.nvaccess.org/ for details.

Chris.

no, unfortunately, I don't.

and this is something that niggles at me also. if there's no accessible way, that is to say easy way of contacting them, it makes it harder for those of us that would like to ask questions before we bite the bullet and sign up.

That isn't a bug.  I'm all in favor of effective advocacy but that doesn't include arbitrarily changing the meaning of words.  If a program can't be used by all users, that is a lack of accessibility.  A bug is something that doesn't work as expected.  The program works as it should.  It is designed inaccessibly for this feature and it works exactly as designed.

Yes and no.  It's no less a problem with the way the existing feature set works than say if the software couldn't output to a particular brand of sound card.  The software was likely never tested with that sound card and hence the issue was never picked up.  Similarly, the software was never tested with keyboard only or screen reader users and hence the issue has never been picked up.

In both cases, it is not a new feature that is needed, but to make an existing feature work for a group of users it doesn't currently work for.

To say that one is a bug and one isn't is excusing the developers for not being aware of their users needs and the market in general.

Technically it might not be a "bug" in that it isn't causing an error message etc, but at the same time it isn't a "new" feature either, and it's important to be clear about that with the developer too.  If they see it as a new feature you want, then it's less of a priority than fixing any issues that prevent the existing feature set from working for all their users.

I think the most important thing really is to be clear on what the issue is and to be respectful - ie don't just go in and say "you're software is useless, fix it!" but rather explain the problem and why it is an issue.  Even though accessibility is being taught in courses these days, there are still plenty of developers who have no idea about it and going in all guns blazing will only get them offside, but they're the ones we need onside to fix the problem.

If the server they are running things on uses WHM/CPanel, and they have either root access, or at least VPS root or reseller root access, then I'd strongly suggest WHMSonic as an alternative. It is absolutely fantastic!

Since you said you're using it (still), I take it there isn't a viable alternative software to recommend in its place?

But yes, that attitude is so frustrating.  It's not a feature we're asking for, it's a bug because your software doesn't work properly for all users...

I too use sentovacast for one of my streams, and I've yet to find an accessible way to do this.

someone has already asked if it can be made accessible, and the developers said and I quote, we will look at implementing such a feature. quote unquote.

it's that attitude that drives me mad with developers, as they see it as a feature and not a necessity.

Sadly, we are a minority in the market and there really isn't a big enough market to accomodate us.

Hi everyone,

I had an enquiry from someone who uses Centova Cast for streaming radio hosting: http://www.centova.com/en/cast

They are having difficulty copying music across to the playlist.  A sighted user would click on a song and drag it across to the playlist.

Is anyone aware of a keystroke or a way to achieve this please?

Kind regards

Quentin.

This is exactly why we switched to WHMSonic. I had the exact same problem about 2 years ago. I can't believe this hasn't yet been addressed. Anyway, if you find out anything, do let us know.

Someone on this thread that you sent to me said that people might not even know what web sight to go to to update there addons or even if they need to be updated or not
I know that for me i wouldn't even know if the first version is current or not so i could be esentually downloading the same version over and over again with out even knowing it
Those are a fiew reasons i think this  issue is so important to me

Re: Google Chrome Browser

Hi all,

I use Google Chrome with NVDA a lot, so I would be glad to help in anyway I can. I can access very difficult web sites in Chrome with NVDA and I am able to click on controls in Chrome with NVDA that cannot be done any other way.

otherwise i could do like a run through of it through the settings menu etc maybe in audio.
