Re: setting up the people app on windows 10

One big caution on the "automatic import" of contacts for the People app is this only works if your e-mail client was set up (or capable of) using the contacts associated with your e-mail account and syncing them.

There are a number of e-mail clients that don't work that way, and when I was last setting up Thunderbird it didn't work that way.  Just a few days ago I had to tweak a client's Thunderbird setup because the e-mail account she had been using through an ISP no longer exists, and she was terrified that all her contacts were going to go when that account went.  They didn't, though, because her contacts (or, perhaps, addresses - I can't remember which terminology Tbird uses) are stored local to Tbird and are not synced with her e-mail accounts.  Since I'm the one who installed Tbird for her several years ago and I know I didn't change any defaults related to how contacts/addresses are handled, it appears that they are managed locally.

When that's the case, you need to make certain to export from your e-mail client and import via the web interface to the contacts for the given e-mail account you're going to be adding to the mail app, and, by extension, the People and Calendar apps.  Whether you do this prior to adding it or after will be irrelevant because as soon as those contacts are imported into the contacts list maintained by your email server they will sync with the People app.

I hasten to add this is also likely only applicable to IMAP access, though I'm not 100% certain on that.

Most of these I've tried with the current ocr add on end up as Klingon!

However, its a great pity more of the ocrs do not allow one to open pdfs easily and ocr them.

Hi Afrim:
Sometimes a PDF document is a picture of the text rather than the text
itself, so you will have to do OCR on it to make it read.
You can try the OCR ad-on, or if you have Kurzweil 1000, you can open
the document in Kurzweil 1000 and it will give you a text
representation of the document.

Not that I don't agree with you but this hasn't been the default behavior since the introduction of User Account Control (UAC).  I've routinely turned it down a notch or two or off so that a number of the "Do you really want to do this?" type nags don't appear.

There's nothing distinctive about this in Windows 10, absolutely nothing.  File Explorer (formerly Winows Explorer) and its attendant functions and warnings look and act exactly like they have since Windows 7.

So it sounds a bit like a cut down versionof Outlook then, rather than Outlook Express which I'm using now. Tell me, is all of this in the win 10 you get if you let a windows machine updat to 10 then add classic shell as it seems mine has been.
I have to say that I find Windows 10 aannoying since it stops you doing normal stuff like copying files from one folder to another, then when you go and look you find that there are messsages which nvda did not alert one to asking if you want to do this and can it go into some other mode in order to do it. If you say yes, it then seems to go off and mess about for ages then falls over with a message you do not have permission to (insert task as needed)
When a 10 machine has just one person on it and when you are admin, in my view it should let you in to everything wherever it is no matter what. Stupid.

Bobby,

There are a couple of variables to involved in answering your question.

Windows 10 has an app separate from, but closely allied with, the mail app called "People." It acts as the address book.

I use Gmail and access it via IMAP on several different e-mail clients, including the Win10 mail app. The Win10 mail app has automatically synchronized my existing contacts in my gmail account that I use as my Microsoft account ID to my People app as well as those from the specific gmail account that I'm actually accessing via the mail app.

If you have always created your contacts in your local address book under Thunderbird, which is quite likely, you can always export those contacts then import them via the web interface for the e-mail account you've been using. From there the People app will synchronize them automatically for any account that is in the mail & people apps. I have yet to find good documentation on doing an import from, for instance, a comma separated list or excel spreadsheet of e-mail addresses straight into the People app. It seems to presume you'll be using a modern e-mail client that synchronizes both messages and contacts with the server.

A word of warning about this download. it has embedded in its

then when you make a selection in the main screen, it has changed the

Hi,
When you are using the win10 mail app, your contacts are imported into the
people app. So, you need to use the people app for your contacts and
addresses, and the mail app to work with the messages. So, you have the
people app and the mail app working together and you should have them both
running at the same time. The Calendar app is very closely related to the
mail app as well. So really, to have it all, you need the mail, people, and
calendar apps running all at the same time. This is how it differs to other
clients. You need three apps running to have the whole picture.

Jacob,

Since David Moore has also posted elsewhere about this he is using
the new Win10 mail app that ships with every Win10 machine and shows up on
the start menu out of the box.

It's got little in common with earlier e-mail clients other than the
fact that it is used to read mail.

I'm still not able to get message text read using NVDA and the Win10
mail app, but I'm presuming that this is operator error of some sort.

Hi Brian,
This is how it worked for me. It took me a few hours to figure this out LOL! When I imported my Gmail accounts into the mail app, those contacts automatically imported into the people app. Really, the mail, people, and the calendar apps all work together. Take care, guys!

Re: embedded object in Firefox

I should also add that at times, if I do try the standard method and it doesn't work, I have to completely start over when trying other methods.  In other words, I have to leave the embedded object and then move to it again and try another method.  the standard method works on certain Flash Players but I have found variations such as are being discussed to work in more.  So you may want to try the variations often first.  You may save time.

Hi,

I found a problem in Firefox when attempting to listen to a sample of an
audio book in the BorrowBox library system. I don't know if this is an NVDA
problem or exclusively a Firefox Flash Player issue. or if Bolinda need to
do something with their Java script. I should mention that the sighted user
has no problem playing the audio sample using a mouse.

I am using Windows 10,, NVDA 2016.1 and Firefox46.1 on a desktop PC.

If List members would like to see the problem for themselves I recommend the
following url:
https://fe.bolindadigital.com/wldcs_bol_fo/b2i/productOverview.html?b2bSite=
4834&browseItemId=366096&fromPage=1
It is not necessary to sign in to sample the reading of a title.

Here is a typical audio book display:

--Start of clip -----------------------
link graphic Railway Viaduct
embedded object unavailable (this should say "Preview" but doesn't!) Link
Reserve On Loan, Available on 22/05/16 Link Railway Viaduct Link Edward
Marston Read by Sam Dastor Crime & Thriller, Historical Fiction eAudiobook -
Unabridged ---end of clip ------------------

The player for the audio sample is activated by an "embedded object" that is
flagged by NVDA as "not being available". The BorrowBox help page advises
that Adobe flash must be active to enable audio sampling of each title. I
have Adobe flash installed and active. For example, I can play any song in
YouTube in Firefox without any problem.

After many weeks of failing to play the preview, I found the following
workaround using NVDA:

From the top of the web page select eAudio if not already selected. Then
press "g" to find a book title. If the next   object after pressing
down-arrow once is "embedded Object" then you have an audio book and we can
start.

Here is the full sequence of steps:
1. Press G for the graphic of the book title; 2. Press down-arrow once to
the embedded object. You should hear "Embedded Object not available"; 3.
Press NVDA + numpad Enter to activate the embedded object. You should hear
"Embedded Object Unavailable Activate"; 4. Press right arrow once. You
should hear ""Space"; 5. Press the space bar  to start and stop the sample
audio of the narrator speaking.

If pressing the space bar does not act as a toggle and the enter key does
not do the job either:
6. Press right arrow once;
7. Press space bar or main keyboard enter to play and stop playing the audio
sample.

Can anyone advise what to do about this?
A. Is it an NVDA problem?
B. Is it a Firefox problem?
c. Is it a BorrowBox problem for the developer Bolinda to see to?

Dean Masters <dwmasters15@...>

I just downloaded and installed the latest version of Format Factory. It put other softwrare on my PC even though I thought I was being careful not to allow any other programs. And the program is not usable with a screen reader. One chooses what they want to do in a menu down the left side of the page and click on that menu heading and the menu opens. The only items that can be read are the first line of items. so if you have a blue ray DVD you want to rip to mkv then you are in luck. If you want to rip a cd then there is no way with the latest version. One must go back to version 3.6 to be able to see all the menu items.

A word of warning about this download. it has embedded in its
installer, Ad
Aware which it seems to install no matter what you tell it at install
time.
then when you make a selection in the main screen, it has changed the
browser to use an AVG piece of software presumably to keep you safe but
which wants to flog you avg stuff all the time.
I had to uninstall both of these to get my home page back and then the
next
time I ran the conversion software it tried to install it again.
Now I do not mind suggestions from software, and some of them have been
good, but i dislike this you will have this no matter what approach,
so I've
reluctantly removed the convertor. As mentioned there could be ways
around
this I'm not aware of, but the nocandy switch installed from the command
line seemed to do nothing in this case.
Just be warned.
Not all of these add ins are welcome or indeed accessible. I'm sure the
intentions were good , but maybe not for a blind user.

George,

Yes, thanks, this does the job.

Glad you were able to access the url. Others said they could not, even
though I asked them to remove the carriage return as you did.

Strange!

Anyway, I value your response.

All the best,

Cearbhall

Hello Cearbhall,

I'm in the U.S. I'm running the same version of firefox as you but I am
running Windows 7 home premium with all updates and NVDA 2016.1.

The link you sent worked for me when I eliminated the linefeed character
after the equals sign.
I played several samples. Here's how I did it.
1. Arrow to the unavailable embedded object.
2. Route the mouse to the embedded object with nvda plus numPad slash.
3. Left click by pressing numPad slash.
I tried three samples and they all played for me using this method.

Give this method a go and let us know if it works on your system.

Good luck,
George

Subject: Re: [nvda] embedded object in Firefox

6. Press right arrow once;
7. Press space bar or main keyboard enter to play and stop playing the audio
sample.

Can anyone advise what to do about this?
A. Is it an NVDA problem?
B. Is it a Firefox problem?
c. Is it a BorrowBox problem for the developer Bolinda to see to?

All the best,

Cearbhall
