Web Browsers' Security And Compatibility With NVDA
Jolene Cardenas
Hello everyone,
Since I'm a Hadley School For The Blind student, taking online courses for my Adult Continuing Education degree, I totally depend on NVDA to work with my Web browser in order to complete schoolwork successfully. However, on several occasions in late 2015, I ran in to technical difficulties with assignment submission for one of my online classes because of Firefox incompatibility issues on the school's assignment submission webpage. I contacted Tech Support and, to my horror, they recommended that I go back to using Internet Explorer in order to do my schoolwork. Although I had used IE for as long as I can remember, I had stopped using it because of this article (among many others): Millions of Windows users to face MAJOR security issues within weeks http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/science-technology/624760/Windows-Microsoft-Internet-Explorer-End-Support-Web-Browser Then when I got my new Asus laptop in February which runs Windows 10, I read an article that said that NVDA wasn't compatible with Microsoft Edge (See below for the link). NVDA and Windows 10 http://www.nvaccess.org/win10/ Unsure which browser I should use then, I immediately returned to using Firefox and attempted to submit a homework assignment to Hadley through its usage, only to run in to the same technical difficulties with assignment submission again! Undoubtedly, the school's Tech Support will urge me to switch back to using IE again, but I admit I'm afraid to because of what I had read in the above article about this browser. I'm also fully aware that if I was to chat with somebody at Microsoft's Disability Answer Desk at: https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&rpsnv=12&ct=1436994582&rver=6.5.6509.0&wp=mbi_ssl&wreply=https%3a%2f%2fpartner.support.services.microsoft.com%2fen-us%2fpartners%2fdad&lc=1033&id=293453&pcexp=false they would try to push me to use Edge as my browser in spite of its incompatibility with NVDA. This situation's so frustrating for me, because I so badly want to submit my coursework ASAP! Can anyone using Windows 10 and NVDA please recommend a browser to me? Thank you so much, for you have no idea how much I would appreciate your recommendation! aloha, Jolene.

Re: Virtual Recorder
Gene
it isn't clear what you did. Did you only
record using a microphone? Many laptops have monaural microphone recording
jacks. If you recorded something like an Internet Stream you hear in
stereo, you should get a stereo recording.
Your sound card may only record a microphone
monaurally and purchasing microphones alone may not solve the problem because
there is a good chance the jack you plug the microphone into now is a monaural
jack.
You may well have to purchase an external USB sound
card and make sure it has a stereo microphone jack.

Brian, when I had my Dell laptop (which was a Windows 7-based system), it recorded everything in stereo, but when I got this Asus laptop, it records everything in mono in Virtual Recorder. I'm beginning to think that perhaps some brands of laptop are built for stereo recording, while others aren't. I could be wrong, though. Perhaps I should try Berhinger out to see if it would do for me what Virtual Recorder won't do. And Gene, I tried recording sound with Virtual Recorder in both stereo and mono formats, and both recordings came out in mono. Sounds to me like I may have to invest in a pair of microphones in order to record sound in stereo! Thanks so much for your feedback, though. aloha, Jolene.

Re: NVDA and Amazon
Gene
As I recall, you said in your first message that
you can't follow links and it sounded as though you are saying you can't follow
any links on the page. Try turning off browse mode when you are on the
results page. The only way you may be able to move through links may be to
tab. Tab a lot of times until you have tabbed into the results. Then
see if you can follow links while browse mode is off.
Try this test and let us know the
results.
On the results page, when you get to a link you
want to follow, use the command shift enter and not just enter.
If that works, it will open the page in a new
browser window.
It may be that your browsers, for some reason, are
not allowing the links to be followed because it is misinterpreting them as
popups.
I have one or two other tests we can try but if it
appears as though they may be helpful, I'll write about them later.
I'm not saying that this is the case, but your
symptoms may be the result of what is known as a potentially unwanted program
being installed in your browsers without your knowledge. What antimalware
programs do you run?

After you type in the search field, do you press
enter? You didn't say you do. I am assuming you press enter after
typing the search.
You say you press h to move to what you want.
That means you are moving by headings. But what does NVDA tell you when
you move to the item? Is it just a heading or is it also a link?

I was wondering if anyone else has been having trouble using NVDA with Amazon. I've had this issue ever since I've gotten NVDA and was wondering if anyone else had it. Here is the issue step by step. 1. I log on to Amazon. 2. I type something into the search field. 3. I then press the lettter H to navigate by heading. 4. When I get to what I'm lookink for, I hit enter. 5. Nothing happens. The only way I can click on links is to use the tab key. Is anyone else having this issue? Thanks Chris

Re: NVDA keeps announcing "Pane"!
Quentin Christensen
Does it announce the names of the windows as you alt+tab or just read "pane"? Have you noticed it anywhere else?

Here's the download page for 2016.2rc1: http://www.nvaccess.org/download/?nvdaVersion=2016.2rc1 Just looking on github I can't see any logged issues for rc1 so if you have crashes again we'd definitely love to hear about them, particularly if they are reproducible. Kind regards Quentin.

Re: NVDA and Amazon
Laurie Mehta
Hi,

I have not had the problem you've described, but just now I went to amazon.com and used the search box as you described. Then I used the h command to read the titles of the first page of results from my search. I hit enter on some of the titles that the h command brought me to and this brought me to their product pages. By the way, using h brought me to a line of text marked heading and NVDA also announced link on that same line of text (so I expected that these were not just headings but links as well.) In case it's helpful to know, I am using NVDA 16.1 and Windows 7, and the browser I'm using is the most recent version of Mozilla Firefox. But, for me, the Amazon site works fine.
