Yes well you are lucky to be able to get into the site past the first link and embedded object. Can you tell me how you did it, as Firefox seems to go into sulk mode when this unavailable embedded object is encountered here.

I have reported it to the local council who apparently franchise this site out. It is annoying when sites muck things up that used to work before. Brian bglists@blueyonder.co.uk Sent via blueyonder. The trouble is they are so vague about what they collect for what its hard to really say, plus I notice with concern that recent updates to windows 7 seem to be introducing these customer monitoring options as well. Now I suppose if they only store the things people do and the probblems they get, then fine, but if the data is combined with other data, then it would be easy for some unscrupulous organisation to identify people.

Probably not a subject for here though. I say everyone should make a search for daft or dodgy things to confuse google and hopefully the strange usage wiill give microsoft a headache as well. :-) Brian bglists@blueyonder.co.uk Sent via blueyonder. Thanks for your most prompt reply. However it appears that the update must be accessed via this menu. Andrea

Error when using the OCR add-on
Hi all,
I am running NVDA 2016.2 rc1. I am trying to use the ocr add-on. When I OCR a window, I do not hear anything. This is in vmware player. NVDA appears to hang but I can get out of it by pressing the escape key several times. I checked the logs and found the following errors. Re: NVDA and windows 10
Kenny Dog <hurrikennyandopo@...>
Hi just download a copy of Winamp and have it as your default instead of the grove one.
It can also be done through the windows settings part in Windows 10.
You will need to go to system, press the enter key then go down to default apps and it can be done under that section if winamp is already installed.
hope this helps.

Re: Responses to Messages About NVDA With Adobe Flash Player, NVDA Configurations, etc.
Jolene Cardenas
Hello everyone,
For those of you who had responded to my queries about NVDA with Adobe Flash Player, Saving NVDA Configurations, and the few on NVDA with different parts of Windows 10, my apologies for not responding or acknowledging them in a timely manner. Thank you for taking the time to respond anyway. Since I'm in full-time ministry and a full-time student online (Hence the total dependence on Windows 10 with NVDA), time is a bit scarce, yet I love reading all these postings because I find them exciting and informative. As soon as I can, I'll get around to them this Memorial Day weekend. Have a good week, and happy computing---whether you do it by phone, on a Mac, or on a PC! aloha, Jolene. P.S. This might sound like a dumb question, but is there a website I could visit that would have downloadable tutorials on Windows 10? Thank you.

Hi,
thanks for the info. This isn't strictly about NVDA, but I'm hoping someone will know. What does the windows update link in internet explorer do? We already have a windows update in settings, so having two seems pointless. Chris

Yes, that is it.
Codex is a great program, and James Scholls has
done a great job on it.
Codex installs a portable installation of Calibre
to do its converting, so both programs are not needed separately as with other
front ends in the past, such as eBook-convert GUI.
There is a legal grey area with Codex. I know of a
list where it is banned from being talked about for the simple reason that it
can also, with the use of a third party Calibre plugin, strip the drm
infestation from purchased ebooks.
Just something for the moderators to consider if
discussion of Codex does continue here.

It actually has keyboard shortcuts for most things but they're not as
obvious to find as they could be. Here's a page with some: https://www.shortcutworld.com/en/win/Calibre.html
And here's the official manual: http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/
I haven't tried Codex that Kevin suggested, but just did a search and this

Re: NVDA and windows 10
Chris, I suggest to anyone new to Windows 10 that they go to the Privacy settings and visit each and every pane and each and every option. It really doesn't take very long and most decisions are straightforward and are of a "yes/no" nature. Most web activity information collection comes from using Cortana as a personal digital assistant. If you don't want to or intend to use her in that manner go in to Cortana & Search settings and turn off the various privacy related stuff like, "Get to know me" [turn it off], "Include web results" [turn it off]. I worry a lot. . . I worry that no matter how cynical you become it's never enough to keep up. ~ Trudy, in Jane Wagner's "Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe"

Re: windows10 and antiVirus programs
Georgi, As you already have been told the antivirus protection that comes with Windows 10 is Windows Defender and it is active by default As you also already know, you should never run two antivirus programs on the same machine because each generally thinks that the other is a threat based on the methods they use to do their jobs. Essentially an antivirus program often looks like a virus to a second running antivirus program. They then attack each other and engage in a fight to the death, so to speak, usually hobbling your computer. It is up to you what antivirus program you wish to use. If you install a third party antivirus like Avast I do not know of any of them that do not disable Windows Defender as a part of their own installation process. Most of the better ones will actually re-enable Windows Defender as part of their uninstall should you decide to uninstall the third-party antivirus. I've used a lot of antivirus programs over the years, and can count on less than one hand the number of infections any one of them has caught. That's mostly because of my web browsing hygiene, as I call it. If you have looked at the virus quarantine locations in whatever antivirus programs you might have been using over the years, and don't generally find anything there, then any decent antivirus program will be more than sufficient. If you find that the virus quarantine locations have been well-populated, then you need to be particularly focused on getting an antivirus program with a very high detection rate that doesn't go over the edge into detecting things that aren't viruses as if they were (and that has happened with some products). From my perspective, if you have a lot of quarantined material, you'd be better off doing a thorough examination of both your browsing habits and what browser-based extensions might help you to avoid infections in the first place. I worry a lot. . . I worry that no matter how cynical you become it's never enough to keep up. ~ Trudy, in Jane Wagner's "Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe"
