Yes, that worked but enter does not do it, you have to use the space bar to actually get it to move to your last place.

Hi,

To activate the resume reading option, try pressing the f6 keys until NVDA announces the resume reading button, and then activate the button by pressing either space bar or enter.

Re: NVDA & Mathematical Notation

Bhavya,

Thank you for this incredibly comprehensive response.  I just returned from a marathon tutoring session with this client and will definitely pass along this information.  While the computer science department from which I earned my bachelor's degree was developed out of the mathematics department, it's been several decades since I dealt with calculus, statistics, or anything vaguely like these on a daily basis.   I certainly never had any experience with this in regard to issues unique to someone who is blind or visually-impaired, which is why I turned here for help.

I will let my client know about the NVDACon as a whole and the Maths Accessibility session in particular.  He has enough residual vision that he is not really a screen reader user, but using NVDA as a "mathematical reader" might be a very good thing for him to try.

Thanks Again,

Brian

Hi.

Will the sessions for NVDA Con be recorded, so that those of us who either
can't join in at the time, due to timezone differences, or other
commitments, or else can't run Teamviewer, can hear afterwards what took
place?

Thanks,

Likely Reasons for Unintentional Creation of Duplicate Threads

Likely Reasons for Unintentional Thread Duplicates

At least one person has asked how duplicate threads come into existence.  While the following list is not necessarily comprehensive, it’s what I’ve been able to determine so far from detective work.

For either e-mail or web participants:

·         Changing the subject in any way at all.  Correcting spelling, adding capitalization, or introducing a new subject when replying to an ongoing thread all cause a completely new thread to be created.  It is best to avoid any change to the subject other than what the groups.io software or most e-mail clients add automatically (which, by the way, is an, “Re: “, in front of the original subject) if your intention is to keep it associated with an existing thread.  When you really intend to spin-off a new thread based upon a sub-topic or tangent from an ongoing thread then changing the subject will cause this to occur.

For those participating by e-mail:

·         If your e-mail client does not follow the standard “Re: “ addition, and uses the equivalent abbreviation from a non-English language (I’ve observed “AW: “) it will cause a new thread to be generated.  This is also the case if your e-mail client “stacks” the “Re: “ or equivalent.  There have been messages with, “AW: AW: “ in front of the subject and I doubt that anyone is typing those by hand.  The stacked reply notation is now extremely uncommon and can most likely be turned off in a given e-mail client.

·         If you are responding to a plain-text digest and are not using the “Reply to this Message” link at the end of a message and filling in the web form I am guessing that often an unintended new thread is being created most likely due to cut and paste errors for the message subject when composing an e-mail reply.  As I mentioned earlier, using the Full-Featured digest gets around this issue because the “Respond to Group” link at the end of each message is set up to open a new message in your e-mail client with the subject formatted precisely as it  should be to avoid a new thread from being created.  It’s also nice that if you want to reply privately to the person who wrote the message you’re responding to you can simply use the “Respond to Sender” link instead.

None of the above is meant to be accusatory toward any individual, but is based on what I’ve clearly seen happening in the online forum.  I will be happy to assist anyone personally if they need to figure out how to tweak their e-mail client or in any other way to stop duplicate threads.

Hi, Anthony,

I agree here. I've tried other synths and E-speak is the clearest of them all. I'm using the Max variant and it's very clear. Instead of complaining, we should be grateful for such a great screen reader like NVDA. Mick and Jamy have done a terrific job with it.

If anyone can suggest an open source synthesiser which is better than espeak, and which NVDA could include, then please suggest it.

Complaints such as "X is crap" without any proposal for what would be a better alternative, are rather useless.

Do people here really expect Mick and Jamie, plus the other developers of NVDA, to create a speech synthesiser as well as a screenreader?

By all means offer better alternatives to what is available, but otherwise please remember that this is free software, and if you don't like what it can do, there are more expensive alternatives.

Just curious... In fact, it's my superfavourite in Android. I tried
other voices, including Acapela Vittorio (which I have for Voice Dream

I suppose it's a matter of variant, but I haven't been able to detect
which variant is used in Android, to select it for NvDA also.

Yes, I agree, ...and then what?

As far as i know, NVDA just switched from eSpeak to eSpeak-ng on
developed branchs.
Espeak-ng contains improvements for several languages and more
languages than eSpeak.
From gitHub you can watch and send issues on:
https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng

The R sounds mentioned in another messages for some language is a
knoun issue, from here we are studing for spanish and italian trill R.

Doing away with Espeak, and then what?

Compelling people to buy commercial voices?

I think espeak is still the best non-human synth freely available.

I have Vocalizer Expressive, but I only use the Russian and Hebrew
voices.

the Italian voices are awful to say the least. Not the sound, but the
intonation. They all sound foreign, get lots of accents wrong, and after
a while I just can't stand them anymore.

If there's a viable, free, open source alternative, then ok. If not,
long live Espeak!

Re: nvda-kor.org warning problem message

well then its a fake patch.
Remember in most cases unless otherwise or you have not load autoupdate services mozilla programs and addons actualy make prity sure you never see their updates and while that could be a problem if things screw up, you in theory don't need to see unless it says its why I use their stuff.

Hi Chris,

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but the same thing happens. I'm beginning to wonder if it's the result of a Windows update or something. I tried setting Firefox as my default browser, but that didn't help either. Here's what I get when I try to register:

"A script error has occured on this page.

Char: 13
Error: Unable to get property 'scrollHeight' of undefined or null reference

I've already contacted the company about this, but thought I'd ask here in case anyone else experienced this issue.

Thanks.

I want to say two things to conclude this subject, as far as I'm concerned.

Firstly: The development of ESpeak was quite phenomenal and it is one of the better packages available.

Secondly: The day I was forced to start using NVDA, probably was the best thing that could have happened with me. To use the word "force" might sound as if I resisted, but I use it simply because I had no other option at that moment, but I wasn't unwilling for the change.

Thanks to everybody for all the trouble you take to develop assistive devices for us blindies. Furthermore, thanks for keeping us on the right tracks in our discussions. It isn't an easy task.
