Re: Duplicate topics?

Brian's Mail list account BY <bglists@...>

I've not seen this, but in a perfect world of course, but I think its because in the case of Espeak or any other synth for that matter, it may not be obvious to a poster that a thread already exists and they may well be talking about a different aspect. This is why it often pays to be a little bit more verbose on the subject line, so you could have Espeak, issues over german pronounciation and Espeak seems to be very raspy on my HP laptop or whatever.

Subject: [nvda] Duplicate topics?

Hi all,

For the past few days I started to notice that there are multiple threads with exactly the same or very similar subject line. For example, I see multiple threads with the subject 'espeak' as the subject line.

I wonder...why do people have to create multiple threads with exactly the same subject line? For instance, there should be only a single thread with the 'Espeak' subject line, and all discussion about Espeak should be in that thread.

IMPORTANT: Emergency mode lifted, two subgroups created, important information for those filtering via email addresses

Dear NVDA community and NVDA users group members:

I hereby declare the termination of emergency mode in place for the last few hours.

After receiving comments from concerned members, it was decided to create two subgroups:

·         Chat lounge: Used to discuss topics that doesn’t really belong to NVDA forum. Subscription address is nvda+chat+subscribe@groups.io.

·         List matters: For discussion of list policies. Subscription address is nvda+listmatters+subscribe@groups.io.

·         In regards to NVDACon posts: they are in fact on topic.

Also, you may have noticed a different “from:” address. This is the side effect of using subgroups in Groups.IO. If you were using email addresses as filter data, please change it to nvda@nvda.groups.io. Posting to the old address (nvda@groups.io) will still work.

Lastly, although we now have a dedicated chat subgroup, it’ll not completely replace various chat mailing lists out there.

I’d like to take this time to apologize for errors in my own conduct.

Sincerely,

Joseph

Re: NVDA Not Working on Web Sites

My issue is not so much websites on my system but that sometimes for no reason the nvda key gets stuck and nvda needs to be ended and restarted.
Sometimes nvda will just suddenly loose focus or keys will execute or sometimes not work until I press them again.
Ofcause once I test out the keyboard in training mode its recieving commands just peachy but it can get a bit bad at times.
Its enough that I wander what is going on but not enough to make me wander.
Ofcause this mechanical board has firmware I may try to update that.

Re: NVDA Not Working on Web Sites

I have had this happen on a system that after uninstalling office 2010 it did this all web content gone.
On another system it did the same thing but when I loaded office 2013 it fixed the issue so removing office must have done something.
The system is due for a full workout in august and strip down as its full of old programs and so in august I plan to strip it down and this will include a full reformat and refresh of the os.
I have found no way to fix this issue and not even ms knows what to do.

remote desktop

Luke Scholey <lukescholey@...>

Hi all,
I am thinking of getting a VPS or possibly even a dedicated server for my small business. one of the main ways of connecting to virtual servers is through remote desktop connection if the server is windows.
My question is, does Microsoft's remote desktop connection work with NVDA and how well? I want to be able to basically navigate the server as if I were sat in front of it like normal, is this possible?
Thanks,
Luke

Re: Duplicate topics?

I, too, have mentioned this before on multiple occasions.

I can speak definitively, though, to what comes in the digests.

In the Plain digest, at the end of each individual message entry, there is a link that has a text label in front of it that reads, "Reply to this message."  When used it immediately opens the Groups.io page that allows you to reply to a given message, with the message you're replying to shown above the edit box for the subject (which is pre-populated correctly with "Re:" followed by the original thread title) and the edit box below that for your reply.  This is, in my opinion, counterintuitive for someone who wishes to participate by e-mail alone since it throws them into the web interface, but if you know you're there you could use this method.

In the Full-Featured digest there are a group of hyperlinks at the bottom of each message in the digest with the click-through labels:  View this Message, Reply to Group, Reply to Sender, Mute this Thread, and Back to Topics.  The topics for a given full featured digest are all listed at the top.  Full featured digests are in HTML format and need to be viewed in an e-mail client in that manner for all the automatic features related to hyperlinks to work.  What's interesting, though, is that clicking either the "Reply to Group" or "Reply to Sender" options will open up a reply message in the e-mail client of your choice on your computer with the subject appropriately pre-populated so that duplicate threads will be avoided and you can just compose your response there.  This also seems counterintuitive, but really works well for those who prefer to compose in their e-mailer as opposed to the web interface.  The Full-Featured digest is much more functional overall than the plain text digest on many levels and I'd encourage anyone who doesn't insist on having their e-mail converted to plain text before reading to switch over to the full-featured digest if you're a digest user.

I will also add that there exists, in the plain text digests, a click-through link labeled, "Mute this thread," at the bottom of each and every message.  One of the biggest advantages of groups.io, as far as I'm concerned, is the ability to mute any given thread you never wish to see anything from again, and it could not be more simple to do.  I encourage people to avail themselves of this new feature when they encounter any thread that does not interest them and for which they would prefer not to receive any additional messages going forward.

I would have to believe that the "Mute this thread" link is included in individual message e-mails, too, but cannot speak to that definitively since I have only ever had digests sent, and stopped that when I started using the web interface (other than to turn it on occasionally to see if anything might have changed format wise).  The digests I used in making the above statements are less than 2 weeks old, so their respective formats are current.

#AdminNotice #ModNotice

Dear members of the NVDA community and members of this forum:

First, thank you for your valuable posts for the past few days.

It has been brought to our attention that we're straying way off topic from
the purpose of this forum, stemming from a discussion that the moderator has
intervened. A few hours later, someone started discussing a topic that
didn't fit the subject line to a point where we've started discussing other
topics.

For the past few hours, Joseph Lee (the moderator/associate owner) was
debating whether to declare an emergency, a first of its kind for this
forum. An emergency mode means all off-topic posts are closed immediately.
He says that, as the chair of the committee in charge of NVDACon
preparations, he felt uneasy regarding this, seeing that this could have an
impact on the reputation of NVDA, NVDACon and this forum.

Thus, Joseph Lee says:

I, Joseph Lee, seeing the current situation on the NVDA list and due to an
important event that'll take place in less than 48 hours from now, hereby
declare that an emergency exists in NVDA International Users Forum. Any
off-topic subjects discussed for the past few hours, shortly after the
moderator's declaration on April 18, 2016, are hereby nullified (threads
closed). This emergency will be lifted once the leadership team (Nimer Jaber
and Joseph Lee) determine that the conditions for emergency mode is no more.

Joseph speaking:

On mailing lists I'm a moderator of, I usually allow some off-topic posts.
But what we saw for the past few hours has been something that is beyond
words. Perhaps I'm feeling the stress while organizing NVDACon 2016 (which
has been in the works for the past six months), perhaps I'm feeling academic
stress, perhaps I'm worried too much about the reputation of this forum and
what not. For the past few days, I've been thinking about current state of
this community and what we can do to make it better, as well as to help NV
Access and other members of the NVDA community have a joyful year throughout
2016 as we celebrate NVDA's tenth anniversary. To put it bluntly, I'm very
disappointed at the state of NVDA International Users Forum, and to put it
nicely, we're in the danger of alienating potential community members due to
our conduct (and some people did leave our list). If this happened at
another time, it would have ended with a letter; but we're living in the eve
of NVDA Users and Developers Conference 2016 (tenth Anniversary Edition), an
important event that'll serve as an important occasion for each and every
one of us to unite under NVDA, its history, future potential and celebrating
its features. To find an international forum conducting ourselves like this
at the eve of this important event is, to me, a huge public relations
disaster (and I'm not saying this lightly).

At this moment I'd like to kindly ask that we ask ourselves the following:
how did this happen, why is this happening, and what can we do?

Thus, for the sake of NV Access, rest of the NVDA community, NVDACon
organizers and for other users around the world, I'd like to sincerely
request that we show ourselves as model users and community members
throughout NVDACon days and beyond (like many of you, I'd like to see
NVDACon become a successful gathering).

If you have any questions, commetns or concerns regarding the emergency
mode, please let Nimer and I (Joseph Lee) now via email at
nvda+owner@groups.io <mailto:nvda+owner@groups.io> . Thank you.

Sincerely,

Joseph S. Lee

To activate the resume reading option, try pressing the f6 keys until NVDA announces the resume reading button, and then activate the button by pressing either space bar or enter.

Re: Duplicate topics?

I agree. Since moving from Freelists, I quit using email as a way to send messages to the NVDA users list. Instead I used the web interface of Groups.io.

Also, I just browsed and look in the threads with 'espeak' as the subject line, and it seems that those threads are created by new email messages, rather than replies to previous messages as the button to show quoted messages is absent. Though what you said about digest mode might be true, I can't varify it myself as I set my setting to email individual messages, and to only email the first message within a thread.

Re: Duplicate topics?

Bhavya shah

Hi Nutt,
I believe that those receiving mails in digest mode have to
compulsorily create a new thread while replying. However, this issue
too can be worked around if one is replying via the reasonably usable
interface of mailing and replying on groups.io itself.
I heartily agree that posting methodologies and ways employed by many
members on the NVDA Users International forum must be enhanced for
optimal smoothness and ease in communication and discussion.
I would also like to sincerely request that we temporarily cease such
subjective discussion about a topic as speech synthesizers and related
comparisons. Although text to speech engines to form an integral
component of a screen reader, this topic has generated more off-topic
contraversial mails than it is worth, and I appeal to all to pause
these discussions temporarily, and allow for the fullest blooming,
participation and cooperate to attain a successful NVDA conference,
which is useful for not only users, but I would like to believe also
developers, and all others interested in NVDA in between.
Sincerely hoping to meet many of you in NVDACon International 2016
Users and Developers Conference 10th Anniversary edition!
Thanks.
