access keys and key tutorial

Josh Kennedy

In a future NVDA I would like to see a verbosity option. Like in jaws if its set to beginner jaws says stuff like menu bar, and leaving menus when you exit menus or a menu bar. When you are in a list view it tells you what keys to press to navigate it, with edit boxes and other controls it does the same thing. This would help new computer users.

Firefox alternative?

Hi group,

Does anyone know of a web browser that is a good alternative to Firefox, but still based on the Firefox engine? I've noticed that Firefox has become quite laggy, at least on my desktop, and in recent years there hadn't been any major new features.

Has your friend checked what version of Windows 10 his/her laptop is running?

If it isn't the latest one - 1607 -, he/she should update Windows 10 to that version.

I had friends who had the same problem, and it was automatically solved by updating the OS.

Hi all,

Here is what happens.

Someone I know has just purchased a new laptop running Windows 10.

He installed NVDA and has problems with Firefox and Thunderbird.

When pressing alt to get to the menus in both applications, menu items are not spoken, NVDA simply says "unknown".

Same problem occurs with LibreOffice menus.

As I never encountered this problem, I would like to know if someone already got this, and what solution was found.

Reading the NVDA log does not seem to reveal any particular problem, so we don't know what to do.

I work with both XAMPP and WAMP as development platforms on my windows 7/10 machines - both of them offer combinations of Apache web server, PHP and MySQL on a windows machine, and, my programmer's text editor of choice is edSharp, and, I have been doing this for roundabout 20 years now - 10 of them as a 100% blind guy), so have pretty much always just worked in markup/source, and, don't really bother much with IDE's, etc., but anyway.

And, yes, to keep this on-topic, NVDA is also my primary screen reader.

Stay well

Re: Editing excel

Quentin Christensen

Hi Ketan,

You'll be pleased to know that F2 still works just as it ever did - F2 is an Excel command rather than a screen reader command.

NVDA does have some Excel specific commands you might be interested in.  They are covered in the User Guide here: http://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html?#toc51

I am actually currently working on our training module for Excel, although that is still a few months away from release.  When it comes out, it will be available with the other modules in the series at: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Accessible calendaring system

Sheri,

One additional bit of information that would be helpful is whether or not you're looking for something that maintains a local calendar only or that synchronizes with things like Google Calendar or Microsoft Exchange.

Hi All,

Does NVDA have a key label dictionary? Where I can have it say for example “save” when I hit ctrl+s.

Well, I don'

t know about a stand-alone calendar, (though it'd be easy enough to write one if one can't be found).  There is one built in to thunder bird that works pretty well.  It's not a hundred percent, but it works well enough  to do the job.  I've heard the calendar in outlook works well, but I can't confirm this, as I've never used outlook.  Hope this helps.

Subject: [nvda] problem with saving settings

Hi All,

I am getting a problem.  I was trying to change some settings in the voice panel and so  I did.  Once I changed what I wanted I tabbed to the Ok button and hit enter, and all I got was a computer sound of a bong ding thinging.  I loaded up the log viewer and got the below errors:

ERROR - unhandled exception (13:42:17):

Traceback (most recent call last):

File "gui\settingsDialogs.pyc", line 611, in onOk

File "synthDriverHandler.pyc", line 485, in saveSettings

File "config\__init__.pyc", line 1083, in __setitem__

File "validate.pyc", line 602, in check

  File "validate.pyc", line 634, in _check_value

  File "validate.pyc", line 1083, in is_string

VdtTypeError: the value "1" is of the wrong type.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks.

Re: Track Changes in Word

Quentin Christensen

Hi Kelby,

You are right, there isn't anything obvious indicating whether track changes are on or off.  You can go to the Revision ribbon and check whether the track changes button is pressed or not.  Changes themselves are treated as Annotations by NVDA, so they appear in the elements list etc.

The only reference for this that I know of, aside from a brief mention in the User Guide, is the Microsoft Word with NVDA module here: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/ which goes into more detail than I included above as well as several activities on the topic (in Chapter 11).

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi,

Does anyone know of an antivirus that works with Vista? Old I know but still using it for some tasks and AVG and Sophos seem not to work with it any longer.

Thanks.
