Re: Windows live mail question

Hi, Brian,

I just installed windows live mail but I do have a question. How do you get NVDA to see the message body? I have to hit alt M and enter for NVDA to see the message body.

Thanks.

If your mother is not already familiar with a specific e-mail client I'd suggest Windows Live Mail 2012.  There is really no purpose in using the older versions of the program for someone who's got to learn from scratch to begin with.  The ribbon system is here to stay and it's putting off the inevitable to try to avoid it.  Do not use Outlook Express, even if you can get a hacked copy.

built which does not run on windows 10. It needs a small donation to the

I do not have the address, but I just searched for Outlook express for
windows 10 and there are seemingly only two options, one is this normal
version and the other is a rewrite look alike that doesnot seem to work with

screenreaders.
A
couple of words of warning. Whatever you install, if its going to be used
with any access tech, turn off the preview pane when setting up. It can make

nvda do odd things.
Also if you try to install the live mal 14 version it seems to get stuck on

windows 7 and later. It used to work but I think a windows update has messed

it up.
If you use OE even on xp, with nvda, occasionally OE forgets how to display

messages or to be able to write them. an OE restart normally fixes this one.

Certainly works on xp and 7.

Happens if multiple identities are created and the preview pane is on.

Almost every time I see a statement on technology lists I follow preceedded with the words I heard or something similar, the statement is either wrong or very misleading.  I quoted and linked to the source I got the information from,  a Firefox document that is part of a Wiki by Mozilla.  I see no reason to question its accuracy.  It appears to come from the developers.

Re: Browse Mode vs Focus Mode Sound

Andre,

And not always in Word, either.  I wonder which version of Word was the first to have this implemented?  I've already opened a bug report for NVDA 2016.1 in combination with MS-Word 2010 with regard to the Elements List not functioning at all there.

It seems to work just fine in Excel 2010 and not at all in Access 2010.  I've not tested Outlook or PowerPoint.

Brian

Re: Why is installing an addon on firefox such a nightmare!

Nasrin,

Gene is correct.  Additional security measures are often implemented with a period of transition where they can be disabled to give developers who are not proactive (and the users of their products) time to get things ready for firm enforcement.

All add-ons will require digital signature in the not too distant future.  Any unsigned add-ons that are currently functioning in the latest version of Firefox are doing so because tweaks have been made by the user to the "deep" browser settings to override the digital signature requirement.  You will not be able to make that override in perpetuity.

It makes no sense whatsoever to leave gaping security loopholes because "it's easier" for developers and end-users who don't want to keep up with threats that have been identified to make additional security necessary.  Certain developers simply stop working on things for other reasons, too, and it's quite clear that WebVisum is dead in the long term.  The digital signing done on the work-around version is just that, a work-around, but no one's keeping anything up on the back end which is necessary for ongoing viability.

With Office 2010 what's interesting is that if I hit NVDA+F7 to bring

buttons to go through the element radio button choice does nothing and
you get nothing announced, and the first hit of TAB gets, "Filter by,
ALT+F." This is in a document that is laden with hyperlinks and, if
memory serves, that should be the element shown by default when the
Elements List is invoked. I'm doubly stuck because I don't have the
visual element to be able to see what NVDA seems to be doing, it just
doesn't ever show up on the screen and I know darned well that I have
plenty of links in this document.

Re: winamp book markers?

Winamp does not have a feature that allows you to mark a time in a file and return to it.  It has book marks for storing and going to a stream or I believe, a file but what people insist on incorrectly calling bookmarks for time is not available.  A correct term might be time marker but not book marks.

I used system restore to go back to a pre office 2013 installation setting and NVDA started reading again. Basically it had stopped reading all buttons and would announce unknown and for links and context menus it stopped reading all together.

In case any of you have faced this problem or know aanything about it please let me know.

Regards
Mohit

Hi All,

I am using NVDA 2016.1 with Windows 10 and it was working perfectly till last Wednesday.

On Wednesday I installed MS Office 2013 Professional+, since then NVDA has encountered the following issues and basically become unusable:
1. It has stopped reading the taskbar items and just announces Unknown
2. It has stopped reading the context menu on the Start button
3. It has stopped reading every thing in Skype ie contacts, recents, chats and everything except for announcing Skype when I alt + tab to it
4 In outlook if I hit the application key it reads the context menu quickly but if I arrow down to any item it does not read it

I am not sure why this is happenning and if it is due to the office installation or a windows update.

I will really appreciate any help. Thanks a lot in advance.

Re: Why is installing an addon on firefox such a nightmare!

As a temporary solution, you can do this.  As you will see, it is only temporary.
•Firefox 43: Firefox has a preference that allows signature enforcement to be disabled (xpinstall.signatures.required in about:config). •Firefox 47: (Pushed from Firefox 46). Release and Beta versions of Firefox for Desktop will not allow unsigned extensions to be installed, with no override.

It wouldn't make sense for Mozilla to have a security requirement of this type and give a way to disable it.

Search the page for the word Winamp.

I don't use it so I won't discuss it further.

Re: Windows live mail question

hello helga how are you?
did you try mozilla thunderbird for emails?
its an open source program from firefox company.
i did not know that windows live mail is not compatible with newer
versions of windows.
i use windows xp and it is installed for me by default.
thanks so much and god bless you too!

Would not know if there are any screens that a portable install will not
access during this on windows 10, but somebody will know. If she has been an

Outlook Express user, she may prefer the version of OE a third party has
built which does not run on windows 10. It needs a small donation to the
authors via paypal, but you get installation on three machines and support
via their web forum.

Re: Browse Mode vs Focus Mode Sound

I can't get NVDA 2016.1 to respond to NVDA+Space to change modes in Libre Office Writer in Libre Office 5.1.  I did get the "there's an update available" notification when I started Libre this morning but it's for a minor dot update, not major version update.  I'll see if that changes anything once installed, but I doubt it.

With Office 2010 what's interesting is that if I hit NVDA+F7 to bring up the Elements List in Excel it works just fine.  The Elements dialog immediately pops up (and, helpful for me, is fully visible).  In Word 2010, all I get is the announcement, "Elements List Dialog, Tree View," with no dialog ever appearing.  Using the left or right arrow buttons to go through the element radio button choice does nothing and you get nothing announced, and the first hit of TAB gets, "Filter by, ALT+F."  This is in a document that is laden with hyperlinks and, if memory serves, that should be the element shown by default when the Elements List is invoked.  I'm doubly stuck because I don't have the visual element to be able to see what NVDA seems to be doing, it just doesn't ever show up on the screen and I know darned well that I have plenty of links in this document.

Or am I doing something wrong.
Hello to all. Last night I tried to reinstall webvisum, as I have
just baught a new computer. When ever I press the install link, the
notifaction to allow firefox to install the addon comes. I've tried
pressing alt+a several times, and I've tried pressing the space bar or
enter when it seems that I'm on the allow button, nothing works.
I don't remember seeing any other complaints about this from anyone,
so is it only me getting something so basic wrong?

Any suggestions?

Re: Browse Mode vs Focus Mode Sound

Mallard

Hello there,

Would H and K work in LibreOffice as well in browse Mode?

It would be so convenient.

Hi Brian.
When you first start Microsoft Word, NVDA defaults to focus mode so
that you can type text. If you press NVDA+Space, the tone you hear is
that of browse mode. This is where keys like H for heading and K for
link will work, but unless specified, other keys will not go through.
Pressing NVDA+Space will go back to focus mode, so you can type h, k,
etc. again.
If you want to hear 'browse mode' and 'focus mode' when you press the
keystroke, go to the Browse mode dialog and uncheck the Audio
indication of focus and browse mode option.
That second issue is strange. NVDA should behave properly in this
regard. You might want to ensure that you are not in protected mode,
however.

Hello All,

I am trying to work a bit more with Browse Mode and Focus Mode,
particularly in the context of an MS-Word document, which is giving me more
than a bit of trouble as far as wrapping my head around what I should be
doing.

One of the first things I'm trying to determine is what mode goes
with what cueing sound. When you hit NVDA+space to switch modes, where and
when you can switch them, one sound is a chime and the other is an
electronic "cheep" of sorts. Which sound indicates which mode? I was
expecting a verbal cue like "browse mode on" or "focus mode on" but that's
not what I'm getting.

Also, I have a 52-page MS-Word document that's chock full of
hyperlinks. When I'm in what I believe is browse mode and I hit NVDA+F7 I
get the announcement regarding the Elements List, but no dialog box appears
like it does if I'm trying the same thing in a webpage. I thought I would
be able to get a set of links showing like I do if I'm in Chrome or Firefox
looking at a webpage, but instead listing all the links within the document,
but the dialog box never appears even though it's announced.

I'm using NVDA 2016.1 and Microsoft Word 2010 running on a
Windows 10 Home, 64-bit machine. Any guidance or assistance would be much
appreciated.

Brian
