Re: NVDA still freezing, don't know what the deal is
The problem with the Linda voice that I was experiencing was that she basically sounded like she was distorted by being at max volume and too close to a microphone at the same time, and there was something about the way she sounded that was hurting my ears. I couldn't bear it! Were you using headphones? I was.
As for the Braille Table thing, I was particularly annoyed by a few of the inconsistencies because I got the Braille Display specifically to be able to read fanfics and other things in Braille, as well as write in my native writing language, so to speak. I haven't written much with the display, partly because NVDA does not currently allow one to input contracted Braille (which makes it less fluid for me to write, especially when I accidentally do a contraction and have to delete a number flanked by slashes), and partly because of the issue described in this thread, though I haven't tried typing with the display when it's connected for a long period. I wish I could type in Grade 2. Jaws users can. :(

nvda_snapshot_brltbl_20160315 is the name of the file in the list, if that's what you mean. I got it back in March and although the experimental UEB tables added to it weren't perfect (Joseph told me it was no trivial matter to fix the minor problems I brought up when I was first testing it) it's better than the current one, which lacks "ea", "cc" and "ff" contractions, as well as only showing format terminators and emdashes (among other symbols) being replaced with eight cells of weird code that disrupt the flow of reading.

For the braille table, what snapshot are you using now? You'll probably need to merge it when 2016.2 comes out.

And the Master snapshot doesn't have the braille table I'd prefer to use, which is why I got that other snapshot when I did. The newer more experimental table fixed the problem of emdashes being replaced by eight cells of nonsense that took up more space than necessary, and formatting representations, and missed contractions...
I can't use this.

I believe the new production version will be released in about a month. However, I would expect the master snapshot to be probably stable or reasonably stable. You can use a portable version if you want to evaluate it without installing it. I haven't used new snapshots fir a while but my experience in the past has been that the snapshots I've used have been stable. That doesn't mean that they all are. They are versions still in development and not beta tested.
The page to see and download the latest snapshots is http://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/snapshots/

Hi,
The reason the driver was still trying to do something was that I had used the old snapshot I had in conjunction with my display to read for a bit, then had disconnected the display without resetting the "display" setting in Braille Settings to "No Braille". As I said, it lasted longer, but still locked up at the most inconvenient time...
Can I have a link to this master snapshot? And is this building toward the next release or are some things not ready for that yet? If the former, when is the next release? Is it some time this month, or next?

Hey, before you have to format the computer. Why not run chkdsk and then go into the bios and see what can be the problem. I'd use format as the last resort. Or if you just want to do it and get it over with. then go ahead and do one. Good luck!

It just happened AGAIN. This time, with no Braille Display plugged in, but still in Word. My sister described what she saw as "It's circling and the screen is foggy," so I'm assuming it was hanging. It took longer
than normal to shut down, and longer than normal to start up properly, and apparently Windows Explorer lagged for a few seconds. I don't know how to recover my writing (I tried one of the previous times this happened by restoring the auto recovery file from the Recycle bin but it
didn't work...).
Anyways, here's the log. I hope this time I can get an answer for why this is happening. I'm getting seriously concerned at this point.

The following speech dictionary entry should do this: Pattern: (\d)(?=\d) Replacement: \1 Type: Regular Expression
Note that there is a blank space after the 1.

If your keyboard contains a numpad, the desktop
layout will work if the keyboard can be used in that way. The purpose of
the laptop layout is for use on keyboards without numpads. If short cut
commands don't work on your keyboard using the numpad, your keyboard may not be
compatible for thatkind of use. I have heard of instances where wireless
keyboards can't be used in this way. You can try the laptop layout and see
if those commands will work if you wish. If they don't, you may want to
ask here about wireless keyboards people use and know are compatible using
whatever keyboard choice you set in NVDA.

AudioScreen add-on is no longer working
Not sure exactly when this happened, and therefore can't figure out why, but, while the AudioScreen NVDA add-on is still installed, and was initially working, when I activated it, using NVDA-key + ctrl + A, or changed it's operational mode, using NVDA-key + alt + A, etc., it now does nothing, makes no sounds, doesn't give me any feedback, etc.
Even it's other relevant key combinations don't seem to do anything, and have tried uninstalling it, reinstalling, etc. etc., and doesn't seem to make any difference.
As in, NVDA-key + alt + A does also not reflect any changes, any spoken notification, etc.
Any thoughts/suggestions?
Or should I just try trashing NVDA's installation, and reinstall it from scratch, since under my prior portable copy of NVDA, it does still work as expected, but, since I specifically like the audio ducking feature of an installation of NVDA, I want to stick to actual installation under program files, etc.

yeah, search out bscross32 on skype, that's me, and I wouldn't have
any trouble doing a call with you to help you sort things out. And
get you set up with NVDA Remote.
I don't see remote just as a, "Well, I'll just pop on here and fix
this up for you", kind of tool. I think it's a great teaching tool
if you combine it with skype or TeamTalk, and you go slow enough so
that the other person can see what you're doing, and you explain
where needed.
I have also created a NVDA support group on Skype, there are lots of
people ranging from beginner to expert on there, if you want to
join, strike enter on this link
https://join.skype.com/I2fAB1Qwm3Gw
What that will do is take you to your browser, sign you into skype,
and automatically join you to the group.

Re: need a free and accessible file converter which can convert wma or webm files to mp3
Recording programs are inefficient
converters. If you are converting a compressed format to another format,
you first have to wait while the file is uncompressed and loaded in the
player. That is wasted time. File Converters don’t load an entire
file before beginning to convert.
Also, using a large and complex recording program
to do conversions is overkill. It's like using Microsoft Word to write a
two line note to yourself.

Re: very good news about audio conversion soft ware
That is an exaggeration which may lead to
carelessness and unwanted consequences. As I recall, even the web page of
the developer states that unchecky doesn't know about everything. I also
believe I recall seeing comments on that page that people should still be
carefull when installing programs to look for things that need to be unchecked
or responded to in some way. There appears to be a widespread
misconception that unchecky will protect you against anything. It can
protect you against a lot but it only knows about what is in its data
base. I suspect that this misconception is largely the result of people
not reading information on the web page. I am not talking about the person
who sent this message. I don't know what that person does. People
should routinely read information about programs they intend to use and
install.

There is a program called unchecky that will allow you to install
any software without any adds, or any unwanted software getting downloaded
with what you want. Free Make might download and install better if you
install the unchecky software. Just do a Google search for unchecky. Take
care. -----Original Message----- From: Ben J. Bloomgren Sent:

Hello William,
I'm definitely not an NVDA proficient user, but your last sentence made me think.
Are you using a laptop, by any chance?
If so, you should set your keyboard layout to "Laptop"
(NVDA Menu - Keyboard settings), and then follow the list of commands and keyboard shortcuts for laptops, rather than the one for desktops.

Re: very good news about audio conversion soft ware
For example, the most used EAC, but for some people it can be so complicated because you need to use object navigation to do some things like tagging tracks from cddb, but it is usable (I use it).
An other option to change from one format to an other is audacity.

Re: very good news about audio conversion soft ware
What is the syntax. I assume you do this in
the run dialog. Do you space between the name of the file and the
/nocandy? As I recall in DOS, you space before adding this sort of syntax,
what is called a switch in DOS.

Re: very good news about audio conversion soft ware
There is no reason not to use Media Player but as
is the case with some other Microsoft utilities, you get more settings and
options when ripping with some other programs. I haven't looked into the
various options CDEX gives you, but years ago, I used the program and I saw
them. One option was and probably still is, the ability to use more than
one Internet CD data base for getting information about the cd when it is
named. Another is jitter, (spelling) something I haven't looked into and
don't know anything about. I think it might be fair to compare the Windows
Media Player ripping ability to the Microsoft zip utility. It does the job
and it may well meet the needs of many users. But for users with more
varied needs and who, for some reason, want to control more of what is being
done, a more advanced program is likely desired and desirable.

How do you issue that command? Do you put it after the extension or before it?

Hum, if it's for converting into mp3 or wma, windows media player does it, no need for anything else... and having never used iTunes, i have no idea of what it can or can't do, I thought it was mainly for buying music from apple.

Goodness gracious, yall! Why not just use ITunes to rip for crying out loud! Is it mainly because ITunes doesn't support the formats you all wanna rip into? If so, then OK, point taken, but otherwise... really? --- Christopher Gilland

Hi All,
I am new to this group and must apologise at the outset for my ignorance if I am not following tghe correct Protocol.
I am partially sight impaired and the deteriation seems to be more rapid at he moment which has resulted in my looking for
a program which will assist me to operate my computer.
I recently installed NVDA and it seem to just what I need.
However, I seem to have difficulty in mastering even the basics and am wondering if I can get some assistance. (Skype???)
Very few of the shortcut keys seem to work for me.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Regards,
William
